The preliminary studies revealed that the coastline of Calabria has an extension ofover 740 km, presenting a wide variety of morphological-environmental features, with a broad series of issues connected to the coastal use and protection. While the65% of the beaches was found to be in reasonably stable conditions, and a further 5%presented undergoing accretion, the remaining 30% - for a total of some 200 km -was subjected to substantial erosion. Based on the detailed framework of coastalissues, the necessary interventions were identified within the planning phase and therelevant programme of protection works was developed. For the most critical areas adetailed intervention plan was set up, and the preliminary design of the plannedremedial works was carried out on the basis of specific site surveys, investigationcampaigns and modelling studies.

SAND COAST

TYPE OF COAST : Cliff and sand coast ,fine to medium granulometry, color clear ,width (especially in some areas as in Soverato ,the mouth river area ,the updrift side of the port of Badolato)STRUCTURES : In this area there are no protective structure

POKET BEACH

During the winter, the tendency of the beach is to lose sediment which is listed on the coast during the summer when the water is calm . These storms can be so violent as to disappear almost entirely a coastline ,especially when there are also at stake for protection works or ports that increase the effect of intercepting current. in this case we have HIGHT COAST

The cliff delimits a well-defined area of different heights which may be a marine terrezzo due to withdrawing of the marine mìlivello

PROBLEMS: There is an important interaction between the fiumare and the cayon present in this area. The submerged cayon are a main characters of some area in Calabria. The Siderno cayon is very important. The main question is : why some Calabrian beaches are not so width? If there are so many fiumare the should take sediment and expnse the beaches. But the beacheas are not so width. There is a possibility : the strong interaction between the cayon and the sediment that arrive in the beaches ,probably when all this sediment arrive it go directly in the cayon ,like a “current of torbida” because the fenomena is so violent that the beaches don’t keep the sediment.SOLUTIONS: Maybe it’s better to let the situation in a natural state

PORT DEFENSE BARIERBREKWATER

The port of Badolato Marina blocks the sediment coming from the S and create sedimentation in the updrift side . In the downdrift side there is a different line of coast infact the beaches are not so width as in the other side

SOLUTIONS :It should be done maintence for avoid the sediment cover too much space near the Roccella Jonicaport. It is necessary to remove excess material, perhaps bringing in other areas where there is coastal erosion and use it for a beach nourishment .In the downdrift side of the port of Roccella Jonica and in Caulonia Marina, it is necessary create a artificial nourishment ,protecting the new sediment with barriers like submerged structures ,to keep the natural aspect of this area.
