Why is he considered a hero?

• He was a civil rights leader who fought against British rulers and got freedom for India.

• He employed non-violent civil disobedience that led India to independence.

• Definitions

• Civil rights: Equal protection of the laws, and freedom from discrimination.

Birth and Childhood • He was born on October 2,

1869. He was born in Porbandar, India.

• His parents names are Karamchand Gandhi and Puthlibhai.

• He was shy and scared of the dark till his maid scolded him to say lord Ram.

• His personality traits were truthfulness, honesty, and integrity.

• He followed Satyagraha means non-violence disobedience.

• He was brave enough to get hurt, ask for freedom, and went to jail many times.

"In my tour last year in Mysore [State], I met many poor villagers, and I found upon inquiry that they did not know who ruled Mysore. They simply said some God ruled it. If the knowledge of these poor people was so limited about their ruler, I, who am infinitely lesser in respect to God than they to their ruler need not be surprised if I do not realize the presence of God, the King of Kings. Nevertheless I do feel as the poor villagers felt about Mysore, that there is orderliness in the universe."

In South Africa

• Educated in India and London and became a lawyer.

• Then he went to South Africa practice his law and he fought against discrimination.

Return to India • He united al the people of India to fight against the British

rulers.

• During the world war British asked for India's help and in return they will give a little freedom.

• Gandhi wanted full freedom and started quit India movement.

• Quit India movement: All British people will leave India and India will have full freedom.

Independence

• Finally India got Independence on August 15, 1947.

• Then India became two countries the Muslims wanted their own country so they got in fights. Gandhi tried stopping the fights.

Assassinated

• Gandhi died on January 30, 1948. A Hindu fanatic killed him thinking that he gave more partiality to the Muslims.
