NWind Power:-
The origin of wind energy is sun.
Turbines generally require a wind in the range 5.5m/s (20km/h).
Technological Advancement
Increasing commercial viability of wind power project.
An edge for attractive investment.
Old
250 kW 30m height
New
1.0 MW 50 m height
Turbines
Fortunately, wind turbines of 1 MW are being manufactured in the country and
still higher capacity units of 1.25 MW and 1.5 MW are under trial at Centre for
Wind Energy Technology (C-WET), Chennai. The production capacity of
domestic wind turbines industry is 500 MW per year, which can go up to 750
MW per year based on demand.

WORLD WIDE WIND - ENERGY
PROPORTION
Growing at the rate :30% annually,
Worldwide installed
capacity :158 gigawatts (GW) in 2009,
Widely used in Europe, Asia and the United
States.
Out of 10,251MW renewable power in ourcountry the Wind Power Projects share 8740MW.

MEDA: Assessed wind power potential in country: 48,000 MW,
while in Maharashtra: 5439 MW.
Sites with Annual Mean Wind Density above 200 W/m2 areconsidered suitable.
Identified sites in the country :
213 out of which 40 are in Maharashtra. Wind speed monitoring is in progress at 211 Sites To instil
confidence in the investors, demonstration projects worth7.34 MW installed capacity were initiated in the state withsupport from Ministry of New and Renewable Energy(MNRE), installed by MEDA.
MEDA with its own funds has set up 3.75 MW additionaldemonstrations Wind Power Project as a source ofrevenue generation. Thus the total capacity ofdemonstration Wind Power Project by MEDA is 11.09 MWin Maharashtra.

Maharashtra As Wind Energy
Hub The growing interest of domestic and international energy
companies in Maharashtra has led MEDA to consider
adding 600 MW of wind energy capacity every year from
the fiscal year 2008-09 until 2011-12.
The state expects to achieve a total installed capacity of4,100 MW by the end of 2012. The total installed capacity
of Maharashtra in 2007 was 1,488 MW.
Encouraged by MEDA and recognizing the potential to
generate wind energy in the state, several private playershave come forward to set up power plants.

Existing project In 2007-08, Maharashtra added 268 MW to its wind
energy generation capacity.
Some of the major projects:
40-MW BP wind energy plant in the Dhule district,
completed by Suzlon Energy Limited, involved theinstallation of 32 turbines of 1.25 MW each.
Jaypee Associates Limited, another Indian infrastructurecompany, has also commissioned a 24-MW project in theSangli district.
Reliance Wind Energy has placed an order with Suzlonfor $94 million to set up a 150-MW wind-energy plantin Maharashtra.

4MW Kirloskar Wind Farms in Maharashtra
LOCATION:
Varekarwadi village in Patan Taluka of Satara District, and at Panchpattavillage in Aloke Taluka of Ahmednagar District, Maharashtra
Description of the Project: It involves 5 Wind Energy Converters (WECs)of Enercon make (800 kW E-48) with internal electrical lines connectingthe Project with local evacuation facility. The WECs generates 3-phase
power at 400V, which is stepped up to 33 KV. The Project can operate inthe frequency range of 47.551.5 Hz and in the voltage range of 400 V 12.5%.
Host Country Approval Status Approved
Project Owner:
Proponent Kirloskar Brothers Limited, & Baseline Methodology Project Category: I D Grid connected
renewable electricity generation, Version: 12.0
Project Start date: 29 September 2005
Project completion date: 30 December 2006

Demonstration Projects 1stwind energy farm in Maharashtra was established in
1994 as a demonstration project in Vijaydurg, Sindhudurg
district, it is projecting 15% efficiency.
2ndwind power project was set up in 1996 at Chalkewadi
near Thoseghar, Satara district. Maharashtra's first windmill machine was set up in 1998 by
Borax Morarjee (Mumbai).
Subsequently Tata Finance, Bajaj Auto and Bharat Forge
have invested around Rs 5 crores in alternative energyprojects.

Why It Is So? Maharashtra's search for alternative energy sources is likely to lead the
windmill energy farm at Satara into the Guinness Book of World Records.
An astounding 600 windmills have been installed on a plateau 3,000 feet above
sea level!
Investor-friendly policies : GOM and technical viability of demonstration
projects have attracted private investment of more than Rs. 10,500 crores .
Consistently Working :MEDA and the Maharashtra state .
The state plans to add 2,668 MW during the Eleventh Five Year Plan (2007-
12). If this target is achieved, the total wind energy generation capacity ofMaharashtra will double in comparison to the Tenth Five-Year Plan figures.
Suzlon will soon put Dhule on the world map with the development of a 1,000-
MW wind park, one of the largest wind-power projects in the world.
It also helps to increase the gross domestic product (GDP) of the country.
