Bluetooth is named after Harald Bltand (Bluetooth)

Gormson of Denmark, who united his country in the 10thcentury.

Began as a private development effort at Ericsson in1994

    yBluetooth SIG (Special Interest

Group) :5 companies Erricson, Intel ,IBM, Toshibha and Nokia

joined (SIG) in 1998.y Currently more than 2500 adopter companies

y FIRST SPECIFICATION: released in July 1999.

    y CURRENT SPECIFICATION : Bluetooth 1.2

Purpose :y Create a cable replacement standard for personal area

    network

y Handle simultaneously both data and voice between a

    wide range of device.

    key features :y Robustness

    y

Low complexity of usey Low power

    y Low cost

y Bluetooth is a short range (10-100 m) and low-

cost wireless network system to replace cablesand give RF connection between consumer

    device.

The Bluetooth specification defines a uniform

structure for a wide range of devices to connectand communicate with each other.

Uses the radio range of 2.45 GHzShort range(10m-100m)Voice and data transfer

Theoretical maximum bandwidth is 1 Mb/sSeveral Bluetooth devices can form an

    adhoc network called a piconet

Example: A conference room with manylaptops wishing to communicate with eachOther

y In PICONET one deviceacts as master(setfrequency hopping) and

    one device acts as slave.

    y

Formation of personal area network (PAN) orpiconet.

    y Spread-spectrum frequency hopping.

y Device works on 79 individual, random frequency

    within a designated range.y Transmitter changes 1600 frequencies/sec.

y Data rate up to 1 Mbitsps

Allows up to 8 devices to communicate in a localnetwork called a Piconet, also known as a PersonalArea Network or PAN

Because of its low power consumption, its range islimited to 10 m.

However, range can be increased to 100 m byemploying a scatternet topology or a higher poweredantenna

    Three classes of Bluetooth devices

y -Class 3 radios have a range of up to 1 meter or 3 Feet.

y -Class 2 radios most commonly found in mobiledevices have a range of 10 meters or 30 feet

y -Class 1 radios used primarily in industrial use cases

have a range of 100 meters or 300 feet

3 modes of communication Mode 1 or Insecure mode

y Mode 2 is known as service-level enforced security

y Mode 3 is known as link-level enforced security

Security is provided in three ways

    y pseudo-random frequency hopping

    y authentication

    y encryption

Success of Bluetooth depends on how well itis integrated into consumer products

-Consumers are more interested in applications than thetechnology

-Bluetooth must be successfully integrated into consumer --products-Must provide benefits for consumer-Must not destroy current product benefits

Key Success Factors-Interoperability-Mass Production at Low Cost-Ease ofUse-End User Experience

y Bluetooth application is real and widely adopted byindustries.

y The possibilities for new application is very exciting

with this versatile technology.y In we will be able to see some new boom in science

    using this technology.

y Recently a project has been completed by IITians in

which daily used devices can be searched usingbluetooth of mobile and PDA.
