The WOM India IT team is in the process of implementing internal web-based email hosting services through MS Exchange servers.

I am handling the development and customization for the SyteLine ERP system – the software that we are using to integrate all departments and locations. The goal is to have one system for the whole WOM group.

When you purchase any ERP system, it comes as a standard package of forms and reports that can work for many different industries. Each company customizes the system to suit their business. Most of the forms and reports used in SyteLine now have added elements that are unique to WOM business process while still maintaining the global business standards.

Anil More stands next to the annular BOP ring.

Too Big to ForgeBy Ninad Oak, Senior Manufacturing Manager Magnum Forge & Machine Works

Announcing a Licensing Agreement with CameronPress Release by H.K. Tan, Executive Director Magnum Subsea Systems

Massive PreventionBy Neelesh Musale, Business Development Manager, WOM India

The ring of an 11” 10,000 psi annular BOP is a massive piece of metal. The outer diameter measures 153 centimeters (60.24 inches). The ring is so large that it cannot be fitted in any forging furnace or under the 16-ton hammer. The distance is 118 cm (46.5 in.) between guides on the 16-ton hammer, so it could do only 80% of the job. The remaining 20% was finished with a steam hammer.

Magnum Subsea Systems has entered into an agreement with Cameron International Corporation for the use of their Spool Tree/Horizontal Tree (HT) Technology. Even as Magnum Subsea Systems strive to develop its own technology and designs, this licensing agreement allows the company to provide customers with a comprehensive suite of subsea solutions and Christmas Tree options.

Magnum Subsea Systems (MSS), a new entrant to the challenging subsea oil and gas industry, is staffed by experienced oilfield professionals. MSS, in its short history, has successfully introduced innovative solutions for very demanding subsea conditions and applications. The company

WOM India continues to work on some massive jobs. Here are two photos to show some of our recent work.

In the photo to the left, we are machining a 21-1/4” 2,000 psi double BOP body.

In this photo, ball valves sit in the warehouse, ready to ship for a customer in Romania.

The job was too big for our conventional forging furnaces so we put it in the D2 preheating furnace at Magnum Forge & Machine Works to finish the forging. The final weight of the ring is 4,150 kilograms (9,149 pounds). This was the most challenging open-forging job in recent times and it is perfect example of “Can Do Attitude“ and “When there is a will, there is a way.”

has also applied for several patents and has launched the innovative BridgeTree series of Subsea Christmas Trees.

Magnum Subsea Systems continues to be engaged in several on-going projects which stretch the boundaries of current subsea technologies. MSS is part of the WOM Group of Companies and currently operates out of Singapore.

Exhibiting SuccessBy Michael Perkola, Marketing Supervisor, WOM USA

Trade shows are important meetings of the oil and gas marketplace where companies share their new products and compete for the attention of potential customers. This year, WOM has exhibited at six trade shows:

• Australasian Oil & Gas Exhibition in Perth

• Offshore Technology Conference in Houston

• IADC South Central Asia Drilling Technology Conference & Exhibition in Mumbai

• International Liquid Terminals Association Conference & Trade Show in Houston

• Society for Petroleum

Engineers Offshore Europe Conference & Exhibition in Aberdeen

• Deep Offshore T e c h n o l o g y I n t e r n a t i o n a l Conference & Exhibition in New Orleans

In early September, WOM exhibited at Offshore Europe with salesmen and executives from the local Aberdeen office, the Houston office, WOMSEA, and Magnum Subsea Systems. The OE booth was WOM’s largest booth to date. Several WOM employees called it “our best booth and exhibition ever.” Visitors and even competitors were impressed by the size,

design, and location of the booth.

In early October, members of the team from Houston traveled to New Orleans to exhibit at Deep Offshore Technology International. While it was a smaller show and mainly an industry conference, many of the visitors were high-level professionals in the oil and gas industry.

The Marketing Department is planning to exhibit at more shows in 2012 and 2013. They will be opportunities to exhibit WOM’s recent successes, including the expansion of the company and new products.

First Subsea Ball Valves for Noble EnergyBy Gary Parker, Outside Sales Representative, WOM USA Global Engineering

Summit

The History of the Dual-Seal Ball ValveBy Bill Lanning, API 6D Product Manager, WOM USA

The drilling industry has always been plagued by swings in demand. In the 1970’s, the price of crude oil was forecast to reach $100 a barrel. But, by the mid-80’s, the price had plunged to under $10 a barrel. Times were lean for companies that manufactured just drilling equipment for the “upstream” market. I was working for a small oilfield manufacturing company at the time and thought we should branch out and get in to the pipeline market. The vagaries of demand for crude did not affect the construction of pipelines.

WOM’s first Subsea Ball Valve order began in the first part of August 2011 with my first meeting with a new Procurement Advisor with Noble Energy. The meeting was set up to introduce WOM, our Subsea Valve Products, and how we could be involved in the NOA Field Subsea Tie-Back to the Mari-B Platform located offshore Israel. After 2 or 3 additional meetings, phone calls and several e-mails, WOM was given the initial order August 26, 2011 for 5” 5K and 7” 5K gate valves only

To enter the downstream market we had to have a better mousetrap. I proposed we manufacture a double-seated gate valve which would last longer than traditional single seated gate valves. This was a revolutionary concept that no other valve had. We called it the Dual-Seal Gate Valve. We got it patented and I sold the first one in 1989. It became very popular in the liquids pipeline business.

In 1999 Sam Puranik recognized the opportunities in the pipeline market. He hired me in June of that year to get WOM in to the downstream business. I showed him a ball valve version of the Dual-Seal that had all the advantages of the gate valve, but in a more compact body. Sam liked what he saw and bought the license to manufacture the design. We built the first prototype, a 8” 600 psi valve, and tested it at the WOM BOP facility in 2000. We had no literature or any promotional material so I resorted to using

photocopies of pages from the patent to explain to potential customers how the valve works. I first started talking to my past customers of the gate valve and they were immediately interested.

Deliveries then became the biggest hurdle to overcome. I recently looked back at some of our early orders and it took us 30 weeks to get a valve to a customer. Nowadays, that valve would be a stock item, on the shelf, and ready to go. It is amazing to me to think that our early customers had the patience to wait for us to get them those valves.

We now have sold valves in North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and Southeast Asia. We make valves from 2” to 36” in all standard pressure classes. We have fire-tested them, completed fugitive-emissions tests and are now in the middle of hyperbaric testing for subsea applications.

Sam Puranik’s vision for a product line outside the traditional arena that WOM has participated in has finally come true. Sam, like our early customers, has had the patience to see the Dual-Seal Ball Valve become a real product line.

due to the longer lead time of the ball valves. Noble was very pleased with the Dual-Seal Ball Valve design and still wanted to fit it in somewhere. They were willing to be the first to buy Serial No. 1. More meetings followed in which we discuss all aspects of the project: delivery time, WOM’s overall history with ball valves, design parameters, etc. These valves will play a very critical part in this Tie-Back because they will be positioned at the end of the line to shut off all flow entering the platform in

case of an emergency.

On Oct. 6, 2011, after payment/liability terms were agreed upon, Noble issued WOM its first purchase order for two 8” 2500 Subsea Dual-Seal Ball Valves. This is a milestone moment for our expanding Subsea product line.

I wish to include a big note of thanks to Mr. Bill Lanning and Ms. Mary Stec for their help to make this happen.

On November 29th and 30th in Houston, WOM will host a global summit of the managers of Engineering from all of WOM’s locations. The aim of the meeting is to discuss:• Upgrading WOM products

to meet the new industry standards

• New product developments• Creating synergy between

engineering groups• Implementing new engineering

systems for document control• Access to engineering

documents across all locations• General engineering standards

that will be implemented in 2012 and beyond

Employee Appreciation Luncheon at WOM HoustonBy Kiran Nayak, HR Assistant, WOM USA

WOMSEA & MSS shared a team building experience as part of the company’s continuous support on work-life balance. It was held on October 20th, 2011 at Kartwright Speedway in Singapore. A 1-hour practice drive was conducted before proceeding to the endurance race – the top 3 teams out of 10 with the most laps completed within 1 hour won.

The Presenters to the Winners were Annie Lim, Lincoln Ong & Tan Hoon Kang

WOM in Houston hosts a yearly event to show appreciation for the daily efforts of all employees. Our luncheon recognizes their hard work and dedication to their jobs and the company. Also, we are rewarding their loyalty to the company and their colleagues. For all of these many things, WOM is most appreciative.

This year, it was organized by Business Development Manager Mahesh Puranik with assistance from Human Resources Assistant Kiran Nayak and Receptionist Rhonda Prudhomme. The event featured a DJ, Texas-style barbeque, and Indian cuisine. We distributed baseball caps, safety-awareness bracelets, and other small gifts to show WOM’s gratitude. It was a fun event and we were blessed with beautiful weather on the day.

Khandenavmi / Dassera Celebrations at WOM IndiaBy Ghalsasi R.M., General Manager, Magna Casting & Machine Works

The Islamic Holiday of Eid Ul AdhaBy Nahida Ebrahim, Project Management Support, WOM USA

The holy festival of Khandenavmi (or Dassera) is celebrated in mid-October with enthusiasm every year at WOM group of companies. It is a festival of triumph of good over evil. For the WOM India employees, this is an auspicious day to start with any good work. It is a time for celebration. It is a day when the world sees an example of the power of good. On this holy day, the company’s

Eid Ul Adha or Bakri Eid will be celebrated this year on November 6, 2011. “Eid Mubarak” is the greeting used meaning “blessed festival.” At the end of Hajj (an annual pilgrimage to Mecca), Muslims throughout the world celebrate Bakra Eid, “The Festival of Sacrifice.” The holiday is inspired by the story of Ibrahim (Abraham) and Isaac in which God spared Isaac from sacrifice and directed Ibrahim to sacrifice a ram instead.

In Islamic tradition, we sacrifice an animal according the rules of Halal (also called Kosher). Of the sacrificial animal, such as a goat, sheep or camel, one-third is shared within the family, one-third is given to friends, and the last third is

This is a Muslim celebration where we all gather in the morning for prayers

including my own family and friends. Everyone has on their new outfits and the ladies and children have on henna from the night before. This year the prayers are being held at George R. Brown Convention Center in downtown Houston or at their local mosque. After the prayers complete, our families and friends gather together and spend the

whole day together visiting each other’s homes, eating, and playing games. Many will even exchange gifts and greetings in way that is akin to Christmas or Divali. We wish “Eid Mubarak” to all WOM employees and their families.
