Magnets – lesson 3
TargetTo understand more about magnetic fields.

Homework answers
The Pole Star- This star is situated
exactly above the north pole. When the Earth spins on its axis the star does not appear to move in the sky- see picture.

Homework answers
The Southern Cross. This is a prominent star
formation, it can only be seen from the southern hemisphere.
A line drawn through the pointers to the horizon will indicate due south.

Homework answers
The Southern Cross. This star formation is also
part of the Australian flag. One of the pointers (alpha
centauri) is the 3rd brightest star in the sky and is the closest star to Earth (4.37 light years away).
It is actually a double star.

Homework answers
True north- This is the point on
top of the Earth’s axis. The Earth spins around this point.
Also called the geographic north pole.

Homework answers
Magnetic north- This is the point near
the actual north pole to which a compass will point.
This point varies as time passes.

Inducing magnetic fields• If a magnet is placed
near a piece of iron it will induce a magnetic field into the iron.
• The iron becomes a temporary magnet, with a north and south pole.
• If steel is used it may become a permanent magnet.

Repulsion test
Repulsion is the only real test to see if something is a magnet because a magnet will attract – another magnet and/or an unmagnetised piece of iron or nickel.
Homework – Hodder B – page 65 Answer all the questions and box.
