Grading/Student Expectations Modifications

The following grading policies no longer exist (only Sophomores and Juniors are familiar with these policies:

• I/proof of proficiency policy

• Junemester

• Resiliency grading policy:• Juniors and seniors are no longer eligible• Augmented the policy for freshman and

sophomores

Understanding Credits

• Each class is worth .5 credit

• Double Period Classes such as ALL Literature courses and Math are worth 1 (one whole credit) because the classes are double period.

• Students can earn a maximum of 3.5 credits each semester (semesters run August to December AND January to June)! A total of 7 credits are earned each academic year.

• Honor and AP classes are NOT worth more credits – they only affect GPA’s!!!

• Pride AND Lunch do not receive credits!

In Order to Be Promoted

In order for a student to be promoted, he can only be deficient one credit at any give time. Not one credit per year; yet one cumulative credit.

•Freshman must have 6 credits by the end of their Freshman year to be promoted to 10th grade!

•Sophomores must have 13 credits by the end of their Sophomore year to be promoted to 11th grade!

•Juniors must have all 21 credits by the end of Junior year in order to be promoted to Senior year.

Your Responsibility

It is the SOLE responsibility of the student and Family to monitor student grades and credits. Urban Prep:

• Host report card pick up FOUR times a year

•All parents have access to PowerSchool (see Mrs. Williams in the main office for log in information)

•Teachers regularly discuss grades with students.

How to Make Up Credits

The Personal Counseling Department will post (outside their office – 3rd floor Room 312) information regarding:

• Evening School (hosted by CPS, requires a referral form completed by the Counseling Department) – Evening School runs October through December then January through June

• Summer School (hosted by CPS, requires a referral form completed by the Counseling Department) – Summer School only runs in the Summer Time (end of June through August)

• Saturday School – which is hosted by Urban Prep for classes that Chicago Public school does not offer such as: all the English Composition courses, Technology, Speech and Gym

Final Thoughts/Questions

• All students are required to know the magic numbers 6, 13, 21!

• All students are required to follow up with the Counseling Department for Evening, Saturday and/or Summer School information (the Counseling Department will send all staff an email once information is posted – students must be proactive in receiving the necessary forms. The Counseling Department will not seek students out).

• Mrs. Williams in the main office is the School Registrar – all grades, transcripts, etc are submitted to her.
