June 3rd Colombini & Rachel Flea Mkt. & Auction July 1st Member Lecture August 5th Members Contest

Coupled with the sad news that one of our brothers, Frankie Cannella, has passed away is news that Rachel Colombini has been in the hospital and receiving extensive treatment. We continue to show our sympathies and concerns. Looking forward to the activities of our next meeting, our magic auction, and flea market, you are encouraged to bring unwanted magic-related DVD's, videos, books, apparatus, ephemera, etc. to sell. The Bud and Debbie Hedger have donated a huge stock of items that will be auctioned. The proceeds will go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Additionally, Aldo Colombini, if Rachel's condition permits, will hold a dealer demo session with loads of his reasonably priced routines for sale. In short, this will be a great opportunity to get some new material for your magical performances at a reasonable price - the best bang-for-the-buck day of the year! With some great new material, I encourage you to select your favorites and polish your performances for the upcoming Ring 81 Magic Competition. Additionally, spread the wealth to your friends, family, and the local community. For example, Joe Clifford and I recently put on another in a series of four monthly magic shows and lectures at the Gulf Gate Library. We've had three sessions so far with well over 40 attendees per session and a fourth to come, followed by a magic show in July put on by the attendees. The word is, "Perform, perform, perform ... " Bob Banta, Pres.

When Chris Capehart first started performing magic on the streets he knew he had to grab the attention of the crowd and he did that by dressing, as he says, “snazzy”, standing on a milk crate and performing a trick using a red scarf. He did that trick, and only that trick, for two years. Street magic, he says, is dangerous. You can’t just walk up to someone in a crowd in Chicago and ask them to pick a card. You have to show them something that makes them want to stop. You have to figure out how to make the audience happy so they want to pay you. Only 10-15% of the audience on the street will give you money; yet Chris was able to buy two homes and put three children through college with his very entertaining street magic. He got several of us involved during his lecture calling upon Ilan and guest Mike Levinson to help fan the cards. It’s usually tough to fool one of our youngest members, Donald Carlson, but Chris did so easily when Donald dropped the King of Hearts into the deck right in front of us only to find that Chris had it in his own hand. Chris showed us how he uses special ink to mark up the backs of cards and how he makes predictions using a trick with illegible handwriting. Joe Floersheimer and guest Carol Stein can attest to the surprise element of these tricks. Always pull a kid from the crowd, he advised, since kids bring in money. Chris asked Jeff Pick to come up on stage and become a kid again. He Asked Jeff to pull imaginary coins from behind the ears of several people and put them in Chris’ tin can. Each invisible coin that Jeff “dropped” into the can made a loud clunking sound. Chris left us with some good advice when he said “Don’t hold back. Have fun with magic!” Continued on page 5

Sad to report that one of our long time members, Frank Cannella has passed away after a long debilitating illness. Frankie known as “The Great“ Frankie Raymond loved to entertain stemming from his years of being a drummer in the Big Band area of the 40s. He was always there at any Ring 81 event making balloon sculpture and little bead dogs for the kids. Even through those times when he himself was not in good health he performed his magic at assisted living facilities. He was the house magician for many years at Sharkies and never missed a Shark Tooth Festival. Frankie will be missed.

Time to Recap Continued from page 3

We all sat in silence as Wes Meltzer performed the Professor’s Nightmare rope trick without saying a word. He performed it again, this time giving a very straight forward, simple explanation of what he was doing. You could almost hear the yawns in the room.

Wes then made the trick come to life the third time he

performed it telling us a story about some Indian children who had no net in their basketball hoop. A lightening bolt hit the hoop and short, medium and long pieces of rope dropped to form the net. Needless to say, Wes captured our attention the third time around!

“We’re here to entertain”, said Wes. Our magic is just part of it. Magic can

be performed by the hands or in the minds of the audience. If you set the right stage in the minds of people, it is much more entertaining.

Ask yourself four questions. 1) Should I use

patter in my magic? 2) What is the purpose of my patter? 3) How do I create this patter? (4) How do I know that my patter is effective?

Wes went on to give us answers to these questions, told us how to overcome being nervous and talked about memorization versus being extemporaneous. He covered many do’s and don’ts and left us all with some practical ideas of how we can improve our patter.

To challenge us, he announced a contest. Over the next month we are all invited to write and submit patter for the Professor’s Nightmare. Entries will be reviewed by a committee and a $25 prize will be awarded to the winner. By Diane Pick, Secretary
