Task(s) addressed

MAGIC - Monitoring systems to Assess Geotechnical Infrastructure subjected to Climatic hazards Mid-Term Review Meeting - Brussels, 17 November 2014

Tasks

T.2.3 Validation in calibration chamber. Test Tensiocone in calibration chamber. Test Tensiocone in the positive range as well as in the negative range in unsaturated silt samples. Test the response under dynamic conditions.

T.5.3 Data collection and processing. Develop a web-platform for data access by all partners and process data for cross-check and modelling.

Deliverables:

D.2.3. Final design of tensiocone

D.5.3. Comparative analysis of instrument response in the field

Real scale field test site:Leendert de Boerspolder

• Effect of climate: soil-atmosphere-vegetation interaction on the durability of the flood defence system (hydromechanical behaviour in saturated and unsatured conditions in soft clays and organic soils)

• Insight into complementary non invasive techniques for infrastructure (hydro-electrical behaviour)

MAGIC - Monitoring systems to Assess Geotechnical Infrastructure subjected to Climatic hazards Mid-Term Review Meeting - Brussels, 17 November 2014

Laboratory Physical Modelling:

• Setting up a calibration chamber for the tensiocone

• Providing the necessary support for thermo-hydro-mechanical characterisation of the relevant soils

MAGIC - Monitoring systems to Assess Geotechnical Infrastructure subjected to Climatic hazards Mid-Term Review Meeting - Brussels, 17 November 2014

Element testing:Saturated and unsaturated hydro-

mechanical(and electrical) behaviour of organic soils

and soft clays

MAGIC - Monitoring systems to Assess Geotechnical Infrastructure subjected to Climatic hazards Mid-Term Review Meeting - Brussels, 17 November 2014

• Triaxial testing of organic soils under saturated conditions

• Bring back into operation and upgrading of a triaxial device for unsaturated testing

• Upgrading an oedometer for electrical characterisation

• Characterising the hydraulic and the retention properties of organic and fibrous soils

Retention and hydraulic conductivity of organic soils

MAGIC - Monitoring systems to Assess Geotechnical Infrastructure subjected to Climatic hazards Mid-Term Review Meeting - Brussels, 17 November 2014

• Need for shrinkage curves to properly interpret the retention data

• Improving the procedures for saturation of the tensiometers in the Hyprop device.

• Characterising the hydraulic and the retention properties of organic and fibrous soils
