Mageia1: installations with GUI

Abstract

There are five desktops available from free DVD: GNOME, IceWM-light, KDE, LXDE and WindowMaker.

DrakX Mageia installer has a number of options to install Mageia1 with specific desktop.

This presentation is exploring desktop installations options in details.

Mageia1 free DVD: desktops included

KDE default

GNOMEBoth KDE and GNOME can be installed as a desktops or as workstations. There is a possibility to install task-gnome-minimal package. It has similar to GNOME Workstation outlook but smaller installation size.

LXDE

WindowMaker

IceWM-light is installed by default with every desktop installation however the smallest Mageia1 installation installs IceWM only.

Mageia1 installations with GUI: prerequisites

Basic: download an ISO image and burn it.

Start installation and run installer to the Desktop Selection (slide 25 on latest link).

That is the beginning of this presentation.

Choosing KDE or GNOME installs them immediately when clicking Next botton.

KDE is chosen by default.

Choosing Custom leads to more options (see slides 8-10).

Choosing Custom from Desktop Selection (see slide 4) leeds you to Package Group Selection window.

A simple KDE bullet is detailed now with Workstation section. It lists package groups included in default installation.


Server section lets you add server packages groups for installation.

Graphical Environment section adds two more options: LXDE Desktop (slide 16) and Other Graphical Desktops (slide 18).


Individual package selection has some more options (see slides 20 and 27-32).

Hovering mouse over group line gives you some packages description.

Mageia1 installation: KDE Workstation

It is possible to install KDE Workstation only.

This installation is significantly smaller but doesn't install common packages like Firefox web browser.

GNOME Workstation looks similar to full GNOME installation. Major difference is in Application packages installed.

There is video on youtube about their difference. The video gives an overview of task-gnome-minimal installation (see slides 26-32).

Selecting LXDE Desktop intalls LXDE.

It's OK to install Workstation packages group selected by default.

Selecting Other Graphical Desktops installs WindowMaker.

Workstation packages groups may be installed as well.

Choosing Individual packages selection gives another set of options.

Default is With basic documentaion.

With X installs IceWM-light window manager.

Install suggested packages lets you select and install individual packages.

Type of Install With X is the smallest Mageia1 installation.

It installs IceWM-light as window manager.

You can install Mageia1 IceWM (see slide 20) when pressing Install button.

Do not press the botton if you've decided to install task-gnome-minimal.
