i n f l u e n t i a l A m e r i c a n typographer. He has crafted over 600 typefaces including Tiffany, Bookman, Panache, Edwardian Script, and the self-titled typefaces Benguiat and Benguiat Gothic. He also designed logotypes for The New York Times, Playboy, Sports Illustrated, the original Planet of the Apes film, Super Fly, and countless others that we know today. Benguiat grew up in Brooklyn, NY and attended Canarsie High School. He was once a very prominent jazz percussionist playing in several big bands with the

likes of Stan Kenton and Woody Herman. In an interview Benguait stated this of his chosen career as a designer: “I’m really a musician, a jazz percussionist. One day I went to the musician’s union to pay dues and I saw all these old people who were playing bar mitzvahs and Greek weddings. It occurred to me that one day that’s going to be me, so I decided to become an illustrator.” Benguait is an avid pilot and enjoys flying his personal plane. Benguiat teaches at the School of

Visual Arts in his native New York. He was inducted into the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame on November 2nd, 2000 and honored as the recipient of the second annual SOTA Typography Award during TypeCon2004 in San Francisco.

Craig Ward is a British born designer

and art director currently based in New York. Occasional artist, sometime author and contributor to several industry journals, he is known primarily for his pioneering typographic works. This website represents a selection of his output since his graduation in 2003. His awards, amongst other agency credits, include ADC Young Gun (2008), recipient of the Type Directors Club Certificate of Typographic Excellence (2009, 2014) and the Communication Arts Award of Excellence (2014, 2015). A regular public speaker (Adobe Creative Max, Los Angeles; TEDx, Philadelphia; OFFF Festival, Paris; AIGA, New York and many others), his work has also been shown, awarded and documented in countless books, magazines and exhibitions in cities such as London, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and more. Now in its second edition and published in January of 2012, his first book ‘Popular Lies About Graphic Design’ immediately became an Amazon best seller. It has since been translated into German, Spanish and Chinese.

The Words are Pictures Studio, BrooklynThe studio itself is an open plan 1000sq/ft space in a converted rope factory on the North Brooklyn waterfront. With lofted ceilings reaching up to 20ft in height, the unique space offers

myriad options for photo and video shoots, builds and installations. Collaborators, assistants and co-conspirators are worked with on a project-by-project basis, drawing from an ever-expanding black book of photographers, animators, scientists, editors, musicians, producers and more.

“Craig Ward is something of a genius. For many years now he’s been pushing type in directions never seen before and his work has since spawned many imitations.” Creative Bloq

Popular Lies About Graphic Design

Popular Lies... is my first self-authored and designed book, published by Actar in January of 2013. Now in its second edition the books has sold over 10,000

copies world wide and has been translated into Spanish and Chinese. On its release, the book became an immediate best-seller on Amazon.com and .co.uk and remained in the top 10 for several months. The book is an attempt to debunk the various myths, mantras and misconceptions that permeate the industry of design. Tackling lighter subjects such as Helvetica’s supposed neutrality and urgent briefs, it also talks about more worthy topics such as the validity of design education, the death of print and pitch planning.

In addition, the book features contributions from a variety of design luminaries including Stefan Sagmeister, Milton Glaser, David Carson and Christoph Niemann making it - hopefully - a must for students, recent grads and more seasoned practitioners alike.
