Questionnaire Analysis

I decided to make a questionnaire to gather enough data to determine what type of magazine I should make. I asked various questions such as their age, preference of music, features they would prefer in a magazine and many more, to gather personal opinions. The questionnaire also included questions on current music magazine, for example the price people are willing to pay and the current favoured music magazine. This would then allow me to ensure the best possibility to sell a good magazine for my target audience. I gathered ten students to participate in this questionnaire, which then I converted all the information I gathered and entered this into Microsoft Excel; into pie charts. This can then show the percentages of which was more popular allowing me to compare the different answers given. It would also allow me to specify colour schemes accordingly to a specific genre or gender, dependant on the results, for example if Pop was the favourite genre, the music magazine may consist or bright colours such as pinks and blues. The results would then offer me the best factors of producing a music magazine. Doing this questionnaire I discovered that it would offer me the best opportunity to produce a music magazine that meets the standards of potential buyers and ensuring the best outcome I can achieve.

What is your gender?

The graph shows the number of people taking the questionnaire. As shown in the graph I asked equal numbers of female and male, this is because it gave me the opportunity to gather both aspects of their preferences. The questionnaire would then contain a diverse selection of both genders equally. Having an equal amount of both genders allows me to compare both genders’ results and if a gender had a preference over a topic than the other.

How old are you? The graph shows the age of the

people participating in the music magazine questionnaire. The questionnaire participants were with various ages, which allows me to have a diverse selection of all ages. The questionnaire consisted of 40% of people aged between 16 to 18, which would result to the music magazine targeting this age group of people since there seems to be a more liking to a music magazine than the other ages.

What is your favourite genre of music?

The graph shows the various genres which allowed the person taking the questionnaire to choose from a wide variety making the results more equal. As shown in the results the most popular genre was Rock. This would then result to the music magazine to solely focus on this genre of music because of the results, as I believe the music magazine may be more successful, since more people prefer this type of music.

What music magazine do you read?

As the results show a diverse selection for the participants to choose from in the questionnaire, for a variety of different genres. As shown in the results the most read music magazine is Rolling Stone. This would then allow me to see aspects of this magazine to include in my own and discover the unique selling point that encourage people to purchase this magazine. It would also allow me to do more thorough research of this magazine and key factors of why it is the most popular.

What features would encourage you to purchase a music magazine?

As the graph shows the results for what features would encourage people to purchase a music magazine. These results would advise me what to include in my music magazine. The results shows that ‘Up and coming artists’ were the most popular. Therefore it is more likely I would be including this feature in my music magazine because it would more likely be more successful in the market.

How much are you willing to pay for a music magazine?

These results will allow me to set a reasonable price for people to purchase the magazine. It would allow the magazine pricing not to be set too high or too low. As the graph shows the pricing people are most willing to pay is between £1 and £1.50. It is more likely the music magazine that I create would be priced between these figures, as it would be more likely for people to purchase a reasonable priced magazine in contrast to an overly priced music magazine.

Where do you access your music?

This question will allow me to see where people listen to their music and hopefully allow me to include recommended sites or stations according to the genre of the music magazine. The results show that the radio is the source most often used when accessing music. This allows me to research popular radio stations which links well with the genre of the music magazine I am creating. It would encourage people to read the suggestions inclusive in the magazine.

Who would you like featured in the magazine?

As the results show the majority of the participants in the questionnaire opted for unsigned new artists/ bands. This could be part of the magazine in various ways such as the front cover of the magazine could include an unsigned artist/ band to encourage people to read the magazine. It would also allow me to research and discover bands and artists to participate in the magazine for interviews and up coming gigs.

Conclusion The music magazine will solely focus on my chosen target audience of sixteen to

eighteen year olds. This is because the results showed that majority of the people who participated in the questionnaire had shown more of an interest in a music magazine. This would be an advantage for the magazine because it would increase chances to appeal to the audience. The music magazine will also focus on the music genre, rock, as this was also a popular choice from the questionnaire. This will allow me to recommend radio stations and websites, for music, for this particular genre. It also allows me to research information on unsigned artists and bands related to this particular genre, as this was also a highly popular feature from the results in the questionnaire.

The chosen genre for my music magazine, rock, would not appeal to the younger generation for kids because of the explicit language and loud instruments used in this type of music. This is also one of the many reasons why I have chosen sixteen to eighteen year olds as my target audience because they are accustomed to this type of music and the use of poor language in songs. Also, the avoidance of complaints from parents and carers would be less likely as students in this age range often listen to music with explicit language from popular artists/ bands such as Pixies, Metallica, Kiss and many more in this type of genre. Recognising the interests of the readers is important, because magazines are targeted at a mixed target audience; which I had asked an equal amount of both male and female in my questionnaire to have diversity in their answers.
