must pick unique orders each day, dependent on the varying requirements of each of their retail outlet clients. Plus, retailers have the right to return any unsold magazines and be re-credited for items returned in good condition.

his complex flow of deliveries and returned stock places increasing demands on packaging in the supply chain. The industry is searching for new efficiencies and better handling solutions, while keeping the product in prime condition. Traditional magazine strapping methods no longer meet these demands, and increasingly plastic crates are replacing them.

his move towards more standardised packaging and application of ergonomic intelligence has dramatically improved efficiency, best working practice and health and safety. Valuable magazines are protected in transit and arrive in a neat stack, helping retailers and publishers.

his is the first edition of ‘Bright Ideas’ in which improvements to the order picking process using plastic crates are explained. The following topics will be addressed in other editions:

Despite improvements through the use of plastic crates, many crates have a small base making them unstable when stacked in a pile. For drivers, delivering to between 80 and 100 locations, having to repeatedly secure the load consumes a lot of their valuable time.

CurTec’s plastic lidded crates provide a clever solution to this problem. Their ‘Lego’-style stacking system makes them sturdy when stacked. This is of great benefit in the warehouse, and to the delivery driver who does not waste time having to repeatedly secure the load. Order pickers need more time for stable stacking, unstable piles cause interference on the line and commissioning of the machine strap.
