How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My magazine, RADAR, represents several focus groups, specifically college students, UNI students and young adults in employment. These are the social groups my magazine represent as the target audience for RADAR is males & females between 16 – 24yrs old.

RADAR is aimed at representing the stereotypical indie boy and indie girl who are passionate about music, going to gigs and having a good time. The social class that my magazine represents are working / middle class aged between 16 – 24yrs old.

Some of the ways I have represented this is by the flasher on my front cover and the images I have used. The flasher says ‘Win Festival Tickets’ which would appeal to my target audience and my genre as seeing their favourite bands and artists live with their friends is very important to them.

One example of how the images I have used represent my particular social group is the main image on my contents page. The image shows the stage just before The Enemy go on .This image appeals to my target audience as they most likely are a fan of theirs and also live gigs are important to them and my magazine offers ‘all the best gigs’.

Do you deal with issues of race, ethnicity, gender, age, social class, disability?

As I chose to target my magazine at both males and females I dealt with the issue of gender. To ensure my media product appealed to both sexes I chose my colour scheme carefully. The colour scheme I used for the final product were red, black, white and yellow. These colours appeal to both genders and suit the genre of my magazine as they are loud and work well together.

There is a stereotypical view that all indie boys and girls are white however not everyone in this social group are, though I do concede that the majority of people who are fans of this genre are Caucasian.

I have dealt with the issue of social class due to the price of my magazine and the chance to ‘Win Festival Tickets’ which can be seen in a flasher on my front cover.
