WHAT IS MAGAZINE ADVERT?

A magazine advert is a segment in a magazine that is there to advertise something, for sale or to promote its cause. Ad sales can make or break a publication, and nearly all magazines depend on the revenue generated by their advertisers to stay in business.

In the case of music it usually is to sell the music, or promote the artist/band to its target audience., this would only work if the correct magazine is used to match the songs genre, therefore selecting the target audience .

The pictures used on magazine adverts are usually the main focus to catch the audiences attention through bright colours, sexual images and abstract art work. Each artist / their music company has to make their magazine advert their ‘own’ to the audience so they know it’s their advert before they even begin to read it.

WHY DO YOU NEED A MAGAZINE ADVERT?

Having a magazine advert will Increase awareness about your music company/video and broadens the number of people your message reaches. They can increase recognition by letting people see and hear your name on TV, in the newspaper, or on the radio.

The adverts allow a higher level of control over what sort of message is being conveyed by or about your music/images on the album covers.

Ads in elevators, public restrooms, automated teller machines, etc. are becoming common these can reach surprisingly large numbers of people.

By increasing awareness of your music/music company this means that it will create a larger audience fan base which will then lead to higher revenue being made if they are buying your music or album.

ANALYSING A MAGAZINE ADVERT

As this is an advert to promote the release of the new album by the artist it is clear that the designer has purposely used an abstract image to attract attention from the audience, and then you can clearly notice the artists name in bold red writing.

The main themed colours for this advert only include grey, black, red and white a limited colour palette. This is because it makes the parts of the advert they want to stand out, seem more important as they are in the deep red.

Jay-z is a known artist all over the world, and is looked at as a ‘powerful figure’ in the music industry so by having him as tall as the builders he seem to be trying to convey his power and how he is ‘king of the world’ each advert will have a different representation which can either easily be noticed or will have a hidden message.

The layout of the advert has the image centred in the middle, with the name of the artist in bold serif font style which is isolated by the emphasis of the name ‘JAY-Z’ below the image is the name of the album and the date of release which is informative to the audience, this layout makes the information clear and easy to read. The visual appearance of the advert is not cluttered so there is good use of white space and this means that people in our day and age will bother to read it as there’s not ‘too much’ to read.

MAGAZINE ADVERT FOR OUR ARTIST

The artist who we have chosen to base my music video on is the artists Swedish House Mafia, as they produce House music, which is the genre of music which we are producing my music video on. The artist in this advert is represented as being quite bold artist. This is conveyed through the effect, which has been used on the artist, which makes them appear this way. The artist of Swedish House Mafia are not really shown that often, as they are DJ’s and don’t really appear that much in their own music videos. The artist who made this tour date advert makes the artists look very metallic on the image, making it look surreal. This has various connotations of itself, as it makes the artist look solid, the metallic which is used looks quite a lot like a metal, and with the connotations of metal being very hard, shiny, cold, and makes it stand out a lot.

As you can see on the picture Swedish House Mafia have aimed to advertise their tour dates at the bottom on the advert, this is through business like structure as it’s a known thing that you will remember the last thing you read so people position this at the bottom of the page.

Most of the magazine adverts for SHM don’t just include one main picture of their face like others, yet it always has the symbol that there is 3 of them either by their faces of the 3 circles. The 3 colours used here represent a member of the group. The artists are so well known that the audience will automatically know it’s them.

As you can see they have chosen to put on the other acts who will be performing with them in a large font because this will not only catch the eyes of their fan base but also the other artists will have their own fan base who may be interested.

WHAT WE ARE THINKING OF DOING

After looking at other magazine adverts, and having analysed a few it has allowed me to understand what kind of factors we will be needing to add to our own. The stereotypically structured ad seems to involve just one main face or body image with a small amount of writing. As our music video has one main character we will be probably using his face on the ad unless we find another image which fits better, The colour scheme we may be using will consist of limited colours and then one main colour to point out the ‘important’ information. As our song is by Swedish house mafia from previous research we found out that they hardly write down their groups name on ads, CDs, and credits they just have their traditional 3 people or objects to symbolize them, we are thinking of going down this similar route for our ad as it represents the group. I will use different edits/effects on pictures and see which would be the best idea, I will probably use Microsoft word to present the final advert as it allows writing, pictures and colour corrections at a easy level.

WHICH MAGAZINE WE WILL ADVERTISE INTime Out is now read by more Londoners than any other free weekly magazine. The magazine was available throughout the week in selected museums, cafes, galleries and shops across the capital. You can also read the magazine online, a digital version on your iPad each week. The magazine includes elements such as what new acts there are out to watch out for in 2014, their advice on best music, videos and night life in London. By advertising our Music video in this magazine it allows us to access a huge audience to see the advert across London. The aim of advertising is to get as many people as possible to see it, that is why we felt this was one of the best magazines for us to advertise in. Where the magazine also advertises online it includes a section which is just dedicated to music and music videos you can watch straight from the page which could be another element we would be interested in.
