Happy New Year toeveryone! On behalfof the Board of

Directors, our staff andvolunteers, we wish you allthe best in 2017. To oursearching families, we areall aware of the increasedfeelings of despair that thistime of year can bring to

those who are suffering the loss of dealing with theemotional turmoil of having a missing loved one. Ourthoughts and prayers are with you not only at this time, but all through the year. We hope that cherished memorieswill provide some comfort during the holiday season. It is our hope that 2017 will be the year that your lovedone returns home. Child Find will never give up thehope and continue to be vigilant in the search so thatmissing persons can be back where they should bewith family and friends.

Child Find Saskatchewan has been met with manychallenges in the last year, some good and some notso good. However, that is what makes life interestingand keeps us on our toes. As you read our article"Reaching Out to the Community" you will see someof our activities carried out in 2016. Our staff and volunteers have been really busy with our programsand services over the year. We have also taken on looking after the national toll free line, which hasincreased our services and work load.

In the year 2016 we added a staff person who is workingclosely with the Indigenous community in Saskatchewan. We also hired a new Administrative Assistant, plus wehad the good fortune of having a social work practicumstudent work with us for a total of 225 hours. This wasa mutually beneficial work placement as we were ableto gain insight and knowledge from her and shereceived valuable practical experience working withus and some of our volunteers.

This year we held our 2nd Fundraising Breakfast at theHilton Garden Hotel with the help of Darrell Nordstrom, our volunteers and our staff, which was a great success. We invited Jim Engdahl and his daughter Melissa totell their story of their harrowing journey to recoverMelissa's two daughters, who had been abducted bytheir father from Australia and taken to war-tornLebanon in 2006. They recounted their experience ofabsolute despair to indescribable joy when, with theaid of many friends and underground supporters,

Melissa was finally able to recapture her daughters andmake her way back to Canada. You can read MelissaHawach’s story in her book titled Flight of the DragonFly available on Amazon.

This year we will hold our Fundraising Breakfast at TCUPlace on Thursday, May 25, which is InternationalMissing Children Day. Please mark your calendars forMay 25 and join us for a free hot breakfast on thatdate. For more information please call our office at306.955.0070.

A heartfelt Thank You goes out to our partners, donorsand the generosity of the people of Saskatchewan. Please see below the logos of our major supportersand sponsors for 2016. I also wish to thank all thebusinesses who have so kindly placed ads in ourmagazine over the last year. Your support is vital toour Alert Magazine.

We are still involved with the Provincial PartnershipCommittee for Missing Persons and working with theProvincial Government, who again in 2016 declaredthe first week in May as Missing Person's Week. Thehash tag was ‘Missing but not forgotten’, it was verysuccessful and a powerful statement. We have alreadystarted making plans for our 2017 Missing Person'sWeek, to be held April 30 to May 6, 2017.

Child Find supports families of Missing Personsthrough our Connecting Family Program. We are committed to working relentlessly towards our mission, to ensure our communities are a safe place for our children and youth.

In closing I would like to say how much we appreciateall the support and hard work from our volunteers in2016 and look forward to working with you again in2017. Thank you to the staff.

The unique levels of bioactive proteins, peptides andamino acids within Ultimate high-alpha whey Proteinplay a number of significant health enhancing roles in

the body, some of which include (but are not limited to):

• building, repairing and replacing body cells for fasterrecuperation

• building and repairing muscle, skin and bones – bonebuilding, reducing appearance of wrinkles, promotingbeautiful hair and nails

• improving metabolism (i.e. fat loss)• enhancing immunity for greater defense against disease• effectively reducing stress• effectively lowering cortisol (helping reduce tummy fat)• enhancing feel-good brain chemicals (serotonin)• aiding in efficient sleep

Ultimate High-Alpha Whey Protein is a one-of-a-kind highperformance functional protein that contains the NaturalHealth industry’s highest levels of the bioactive peptideAlpha-lactalbumin – nature’s most perfect form of protein. Theexceptionally high levels of bioactive proteins, peptides andamino acids are obtained through an exclusive low-heat, crossflow micro-filtration method that filters out all impurities andguarantees a completely bioavailable, high performance proteincoming from 100% whey isolate (no inexpensive, less bioavailableconcentrate). The result is a protein that can actually impact thebody’s biological systems, improve immunity, help lower stresshormones (cortisol), balance moods, reduce cravings, aid indeep restorative sleep and boost energy levels during the day.

Protein is second only to water as the most plentiful substancein the body. In fact, well over 50% of your body’s dry weight isprotein. Unfortunately, many people – especially strict vegetarians and the elderly – do not consume enough highquality protein through their modern diet. Protein is essentialfor the body to maintain, repair and build body tissues including muscles, organs, skin and hair. The side effects of

inadequate protein intake can include a loss of muscle tissue, weight gain, bone loss, compromised skin integrity, lethargyand compromised immunity (becoming sick frequently) – allof which are hallmarks of premature aging.

Whey protein has been clinically studied and has been shownto have a variety of beneficial effects on health extending beyond simply improving muscle repair and growth. Wheyprotein can also help to support weight management by reducing cravings and supporting the production of lean muscle mass. Even more impressively, whey protein has beenshown to reduce the risk of metabolic diseases like diabetesby helping to manage blood glucose levels and insulin resistance. It also helps to improve immune function and gastrointestinal health.

why is high-alpha wheyProtein superior?

Whey protein isolates are the purestform of whey protein, containingupwards of 95 percent protein withextremely low levels of lactose andfat. If the whey is damaged by excessive heat, chemicals or acids, it will be rendered “denatured,” andwill therefore not be a viable proteinsource to the body as it will have few, if any, health benefits.High-Alpha Whey Protein contains 100% whey protein isolate, which is processed at a low temperature to prevent denaturation.

Ultimate High-Alpha Whey Protein is also guaranteed to containa minimum of 33% Alpha-lactalbumin—nature’s most perfectprotein! Alpha-lactalbumin has been shown to be responsiblefor many of the beneficial effects of whey protein includingfaster growth and repair of muscle tissue, enhanced immunefunction, stress reduction, mood enhancement and improvedsleep.

Child Find saskatchewan,reaching out

to the Community

Happy New Year to all our readers and to our searchingfamilies in Saskatchewan. As we fade out of the holidayseason, most of us spending it with family and friends,

we are all too well aware of the increased feelings of despairthat this time of year can bring to those who are suffering theloss of having a missing loved one. Please know you are all inour thoughts at this time and throughout the year.

To say the least, 2016 has been a trying year with a number ofnew cases registered with us here at Child Find. We keep incontact with the families of those who have missing lovedones and are witness to their strength and tenacity. It is trulyincredible.

Child Find continues to deliver the All About Me ID and AlertYouth Clinics to various organizations and businesses inSaskatchewan. If you work with children from infants to 10years old, then the All About Me ID program is for you. Weprovide a photo of your child, fingerprints or footprints for babies and the custodial parents fill out the physical informationabout their child. This booklet is meant to be up-dated regularlyas the child changes and grows and must kept in a safe, accessible place. Should your child go missing, the informationwithin the booklet can greatly assist law enforcement insearching for your child.

Alert Youth is based on the same concept as the All About Me IDprogram but is geared to older kids with a more comprehensiveapproach. The booklet, along with photo and fingerprints thatwe do on-site, has space to record personal information likevehicle information, employment, medical information andphysical descriptions such as piercings and tattoos and whereto look if they go missing. Youth are urged to give this bookletto a trusted friend or relative so that it can be easily accessedand given to law enforcement should the need arise. There isalso an opportunity to participate in a workshop with theAlert Youth program where teenagers can engage in an openand honest discussion about issues that affect them. The conversation focuses on the consequences of risky behaviourand the realities of life on the street.

Child Find is reaching out to the communityand building partnerships for the bettermentof educating people on missing persons.”

As you go through daily life you will see personsnew to Canada and you may think “how didthese people get here?” From the history

books you will have seen images of personscoming by ship; however, in our modern worldwith planes moving people in and out of thecountry you can be curious about how theimmigration process is organized andimplemented.

With Canada having good control of its borders, it has the ability to monitor and decide on who can enter. So, you will seevisitors permitted entry as tourists or tovisit family; or, students doing post-secondarystudies on a study permit; or, workers whohold a work permit which defines what theycan or cannot do and for how long. Others havebeen given the status of a Permanent Resident (i.e. not quite a citizen) and enjoy the opportunity of making long-term plans.

Removing the Mystery Around ImmigrationAt Edge Immigration we are consulted every day by personsnear and far on questions like:• Is there a program through which I can apply for

permanent residency?• How can I sponsor my spouse or child or parent?• How can I extend my status as a worker or student or

visitor?• I lost my status. How can I restore it?• I was refused on an application. Why? Can I successfully

apply again?• Do I have the correct documents? What am I missing?• Am I eligible to apply for citizenship?

Our regulated immigration consultant (Edward Ryan, RCIC)and lawyer (Kiera Neufeld-Heinrichs, J.D.) assess thesekinds of questions and explain how the process works toremove the mystery and uncertainty. They advise on eligibility criteria, dig for potential issues, determine whatdocuments are needed to support an application, and givean expectation of how long the application may take to bedecided upon by an Immigration, Refugees and CitizenshipCanada (IRCC) office in Canada or overseas; or through theSaskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP); orthrough the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada(IRB).

Our support staff (Cherie, Shelly,Jory, Setareh, Georgetta, Ellamor,Nisha, Tanveen, Artiom) assist clientsthrough the application-building process and are experienced in determining the correct forms to use, inputting accurate information, assembling the packageproperly for signing, and readying applications for final review and submission. After the application is submitted,we continue to monitor its progress through to finalization. The goal of this operation is to guide clients to their desiredoutcome, e.g. a visa, a renewal of status, reuniting familymembers, etc., by meeting the eligibility criteria set by thegoverning body that will review the application.

We take great satisfaction in seeing our clients receive theoutcome they hoped for. Each application has a lot atstake –the future of an individual or family– so we areaware of the depth of responsibility we have been given inour role as adviser, facilitator and advocate.

Use whole and naturally grown foods wherever possible. Local and organic aregreat but not always possible, so make this achievable by sticking with wholefoods.

Use protein-rich foods, minimizing excessively starchy ingredients like corn andpotatoes. Coconut and chickpea flours are two great alternatives, as well as eggs.

Use natural sweeteners rather than refined and zero calorie chemical sweeteners.Neither of the latter are great for you as they don't contain any nutritionalvalue. In contrast, berries add flavour and sweetness while also adding manyphytonutrients that keep your body strong.

Use fat-burning fats like coconut oil and avocado. Not all fats are created equal. Some assist in gaining or maintaining high metabolism rates while others leadto inflammation and weight gain.

add fiber. As many types and as much fiber as the food can handle. Seed andvegetable fibers add to the texture of baked goods while reducing the net carbs.

enhance flavours with the subtle or bold use of herbs and spices. When tastespop, alternative textures become interesting rather than deterrents.

As an athlete, a significant dedication is made to health. Every bit of advantage that can be gained is targeted. Whether you are a serious athleteor serious about your health, there are many schools of thought you cansubscribe to. Everything from the Ketogenic and Paleo diets, to the morewell-known gluten free and vegan lifestyles. Caution should not be thrownto the wind though, as there is so much more to be considered than just alist of do's and don'ts.

When it comes to food, there are many that inhibit or enhance progress. Despite extensively used terms like "superfood," a balanced diet is generallythe healthiest way of eating. Nourishing the spirit is also an important consideration. Eating enjoyable foods is often key to maintaining healthychoices. Unfortunately, few convenience foods find the balance betweennutritious and delicious. Inside Out Bakery customizes products, bakedgoods and meals, so that eating for health is synonymous with enjoyingfood. Eats that are #nutritiousndelicous is one of our core values.

ALERT MAGAZINE 25

With increasing popularity, comes an increase in the number of traumatic injuries and even fatalities, with traumatic brain injurycited as the main cause of death. Each year, hundreds of preventable head injuries are reported on Canadian ski, snowboard andtoboggan hills. Injuries such as sprains and broken bones are also common. Most of these injuries can be prevented by wearingappropriate gear, such as a certified helmet, or obtaining proper training and knowledge, so you can have a fun-filled day onthe slopes – accident free.

Downhill skiing and snowboarding arewidely popular winter sports, butthey can also be dangerous sports if

safety precautions aren’t taken. According tothe Canadian Ski Council report, 2007-2008Canadian Skier and Snowboarder Facts andStats, there are now over four millionCanadians participating in downhill skiingand snowboarding activities.

www.canadasafetycouncil.org

Helmets cannot prevent all head injuries, but it can significantly reduce your risk of a head injury. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2006, showed that helmets used for skiingand snowboarding are associated with 60 per cent reduction in head injuries.

Skiers and boarders must always be aware of their surroundings at all times and perform activities that coincide with their skill level. Falling, colliding with other people or objects, or losing control are the mostcommon causes of skiing injuries.

Take care on the slopes and follow these simple steps onhow you can prevent injuries:

learn the slopes! • Enrolling in ski or snowboard lessons with a certified instructor is a great way to learn the principles of your chosen sport, develop a proper technique, as well as learn the proper way to use the ski lift.

get geared up! • Wear a certified ski helmet that has side vents to allow for hearing. • Equipment should be properly fitted and well maintained. Don’t use hand-me-downs if they are not the right size. • Have the proper equipment: Skis and poles need to be sized according to the skier’s height and ability. Boots should be the right size. Ask for help when buying the equipment to ensure you have the right size. • Before the first run of the year, have your bindings checked to ensure they work properly. • Wear sunscreen to protect exposed skin and ski goggles or sunglasses to protect your eyes. • Wear windproof and waterproof clothing. It can get very chilly on the top of a slope. • Wear multiple layers of lightweight clothing, so articles can be taken off, or added as conditions or exertion levels change.

responsible skiing and boarding: • Stretch and warm up before your activity. • Always stay with a buddy – never go it alone. • Only ski, snowboard or sled on hills that are appropriate for your ability. • Follow the Skier’s Responsibility Code: - Always stay in control, and be able to stop or avoid other people or objects. - People ahead of you have the right of way. It is your responsibility to avoid them. - Do not stop where you obstruct a trail, or are not visible from above. - Whenever starting downhill or merging into a trail, look uphill and yield to others. - Always use devices to help prevent runaway equipment. - Observe and obey all posted signs and warnings. - Keep off closed trails and out of closed areas. - Ensure you have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely prior to using any lift.

Make sure to take lessons, follow the rules of the slopes, and avoid risky behaviour, then you are on the right trackto having a fun, injury-free day on the slopes. Remember,if you are tired – take a rest, if you are cold – go inside andget a warm drink!

stay safe on the slopes! Continued
