Vol 6 No. 6 June, 2010 IPEX 2010 and UK visas for PakistanisIPEX is among the world’s fourth biggest exhibition which is held in Birmingham, UK,

every four years. At IPEX 2010 more than 1000 exhibitors showcased their latestinnovations and technologies for printing and packaging industry. Almost all the bigindustry players participated. Conferences and workshops were held. Interestedparticipants attended the events. Around 100,000 visitors from around the world turned upfor the show. A number of deals were successfully concluded.

About 100 people from Pakistan used to visit IPEX in the past. This time, however, onlya handful of Pakistanis could visit the show because of visa constraints. Even members ofrenowned printing and packaging units were not issued visa. Representatives of mostimportant and world renowned manufacturers like Kodak, Bobst, Komori, manroland, KBAand many more could also not get the visas. Mostly only those Pakistanis could proceed forthe show who either already had multiple entry Visas or those who held dual nationalities.

After evaluation of the innovations and technologies provided by more than 1000exhibitors showcased in the exhibition several deals have been finalized. Iran, Malaysia,India, China and many more Asian countries materialized their requirements from theexhibitors and got knowledge of latest developments in the printing and packaging industry. The rapid changes in pre-press and software have been seen during the exhibition.

Unfortunately we could not access all the information and could not materialize our dealswhich were well planned for our future requirements. Pakistani also could not attend themeetings which were planned during the show and had to cancel their scheduled meetings.

It is, however, good news for business community that the British High Commissionersaid that for the promotion of trade and Industry with two countries, work is being done forquick processing of the business visas in near future. He was talking in a meeting with adelegation of businesspersons in Islamabad who called on him recently. He also said thatthe agreement signed 2 years back between the two countries for Trusted Partners will besoon restored. The agreement was signed for the progress of bilateral trade andaccelerate of economy between the two countries,

Establishment of Pakistan Packaging Institute is hailed byPackagers all over the country

The news regarding establishment of Pakistan Packaging Institute appeared in last issueof Print2Pack is being hailed by the packagers all over the country. We congratulate theMinistry of Commerce for taking such an important decision. It would be appropriate for theMinistry of Commerce to include in their Advisory committees experts from the Packagingindustry for the establishment of the institute and perhaps also look for assistance fromrenowned Printing, Packaging & Graphic Arts institutes of the world. Print2pack team willgladly respond to any call by the Ministry for advisory service for the Project.

The syllabus for different segments of the packaging industry must be preparedaccording to the environment of Pakistani packagers. The management of the institute musthave to arrange dialogues with the Pakistan renowned packagers to get knowledge of theirrequirement for getting best stuff to serve the industry in a better way. We must prepare rightpeople for the right job in the industry. Our requirements are entirely different that ofdeveloped countries. Before hand we must train the teachers. Though best talents in the fieldare available in Pakistan but they can only deliver the technology after having experiencefrom world renowned institutes. As time is running and according to report we have only 30months time in which we have to complete the project so we must prepare the teachers.

There is a dire need to study the curriculum and teaching methodology from ourneighboring countries like Indian Packaging Institute, Sri Lanka Institute of Packaging andfrom international forum like World Packaging Organization having members of packaginginstitutes from several countries. With the case study we can make a model institute toproduce the students who can work with out country’s atmosphere.

It is suggested that an advisory board be set-up in which the expertise from thepackagers and related fields must be included at earliest possible. They can deliver thebest possible ways for the establishment of an institute from where the industry get talents.

ARTICLE

Continued from last issue:

Colour SwitchingHP's Digital Offset Colour printing technology enables

the printing of all colour separations with a single station. After one colour separation has been created and printed, thenext one (a different colour) is created and printed on thesame station. This is possible since the blanket completelytransfers the previous image, and none of the image stays onthe blanket. Single station printing has several advantages, including compactness, lower cost of hardware, and bettermechanical accuracy, which translates, for example, tobetter registration.

The HP printing engine basically performs the followingoperations sequentially:

1. Electrostatic charging of the electro-photographic Photo

Imaging Plate (PIP) which is mounted on the imagingcylinder.

2. Exposure of the PIP by a scanned array of laser diodes. These lasers are controlled by the raster image processor thatconverts instructions from a digital file into 'on/off '

instructions for the lasers.3. Image development performed by the Binary Ink

Developer (BID) units.4. Transfer of the inked image to the blanket cylinder.5. Removal of any residual ink and electrical charge from

the PIP.6. Heating of the inked image carried by the blanket.7. Transfer of the heated inked image to the substrate held

by the impression cylinder. These operations repeat themselves for every colour

separation in the image.

The beginning of 2010 has been marked by amongstother things, with a slight reverse in industry fortunesand while it is clear that market demand has certainlyincreased (particularly in Asia were the economy inChina grew in the first quarter of 2010 by over 12%) theeconomic revival has caused a supply / demandimbalance on the raw material markets.

The economic collapse end of 2008 was followed by asignificant de-stocking of most raw material supplychains. As a consequence especially costs of basechemicals increased continuously since early 2009. Allkey raw materials the ink industry relies on, likeBenzene, Toluene, Ethylene and Propylene, see doubledigit price increases. Another factor driving up rawmaterial cost is a number of "force majeure" situationsand key base raw material suppliers moving away fromthe ink industry, like Dow exiting their vinyl resinbusiness.

Reductions in capacity are impacting on all areas ofthe industry with the packaging and narrow web inkmarkets also similarly affected by global shortages in keymaterials such as acrylates or acrylic resins which arederived from acrylic acid. Acrylic acid is facing a globalshortage, which started in North America after theproduction incidents at Dow and Arkema, but has nowspread around the world. Shortages have hit China andrecently BASF announced it will take out capacity formaintenance. Many suppliers have now put in allocationsto customers and clearly prices for acrylates and acrylicresins are now under upward pressure as a consequence -latterly this has also been as a result of the prices forstyrene, which is used as a comonomer in styrene acrylicresins almost returning to the record levels of 2008.

"While acrylic resins are a key raw material for waterbased inks - acrylates are the material more commonlyfound in UV inks and the issues described above are nowcausing significant challenges for water-based and UVbased packaging and narrow web ink markets", explainsJens Zimmermann, Director Global Marketing FlintGroup Packaging & Narrow Web. He continues: "Tofurther compound this problem - the situation with themajor raw materials for solvent-based inks is alsoworrying as solvents have also recently started to comeunder significant price pressure. A prominent example ofthis is nitro cellulose where price are driven up by highincreases in wood-pulp, a key raw materials for NC."
