the VFR800 Interceptor; and the New Mid Concept, which

At the 2010 Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations held at Thunder Valley

Raceway in Lakewood, Colorado, on September 25-26, Team USA dom-

inated the international competition, clinching the teams 21st Motocross

of Nations victory and sixth straight win. Honda Red Riders ANDREW

SHORTand TREY CANARDfilled two of the three spots on the team that

took on and beat the best riders from around the world, and they did it

aboard their Honda CRF450R and CRF250R race machines.

The Motocross of Nations is the worlds most prestigious Motocross

event, where the biggest names in Motocross from across the globe team

up to battle for national pride. Unlike any other Motocross event,

Motocross of Nations is a real team competition, where teammates work

together for a common goal: winning the Chamberlain Trophy, something

that is only possible with each riders mutual commitment.

Honda Racings Short competed in the MX3/Open class and GEICO

    PowersportsHondasCanard tackledthe MX2class; bothriders dominated

their qualifying races on Saturday and went into Sundays race on top inthe points. In this unique competition where 250cc and 450cc machines

compete side by side, the opening race of the combined three-race format

kicked off with the MX1 and MX2 classes going head to head. As a result,

Canard joined Team Captain Ryan Dungey on the start line. The Honda

racer was fast out of the start gate aboard his CRF250R but quickly found

himself caught in a first-turn pileup, relegating him to the rear of the pack.

With national pride at stake, Canard remounted and led a solid come-from-

behind charge to take the checkers in a hard-fought 12th place. Dungey

teams first win of the event.

Up next and racing back-to-back motos, Canard joined

dropped, Short pulled off a hot start aboard his CRF450R

also got a good start, but for the second time in a row he

mid-pack. Upfront, Short engaged in a tight battle with New

Zealands Ben Townley until contact was made, bringing

Short down; he suffered a broken clutch lever in the fall.

The Honda Red Rider remounted to salvage 13th place,

while Canard pulled off a brilliant comeback ride, passing

many of the bigger bikes to clinch seventh place.

Going into the third and final decider race, Team USA

trailed Germany in overall points. Short and Dungey

teamed up in the combined MX1 and MX3/Open competi-

tion, and it was Short who again grabbed the holeshot and

raced to an early lead with his teammate in close pursuit.

Knowing the team needed a good final result to move intothe points lead, and coming straight off the back of moto

two, Short let the fresher Dungey pass him midway into

the race. The pair went on to cross the finish line 1-2,

which was enough to secureTeam USAits 21st Motocross

of Nations victory. FollowingTeam USAwas Belgium in the

runner-up spot, and then Germany in third place.

As 2011 draws close its time once again to gear up for anoth

son of Supercross racing. American Honda will be well-repre

by two riders new to the factory team who are nonetheless

faces who began their racing careers years ago as amateurs

Hondas. TREY CANARD and JOSH GRANT join the Am

Honda Racing team for 2011 to contest both the AMA Supe

Championship and AMA Motocross Championship aboard

    CRF450R race machines.

For 37 years Honda has amassed an unparalleled record

Supercross and Motocross, winning more championships th

other manufacturer. Canard added to that tally in 2010 by w

    the 250 Motocross Championship.

Both Trey and Josh have shown great speed in th

competition, said Erik Kehoe, Honda Racing Team Ma

Trey demonstrated his ability on the Honda CRF450R la

when he filled in for an injured rider and finished with fiv

secutive podiums. Josh has also shown huge potentia450 class since graduating from the 250 class, where h

CBR250Rn the USA, 250cc street bikes often get crowded into

the beginner-bike niche. Although the 2011 Honda

CBR250R fulfills such a job description to a T, it would

be a mistake to think this all-new machine is suited only to

beginners: a starter bike to be discarded as soon as the

rider moves up to a bigger mount. We discovered during

our riding test that while new riders thoroughly enjoyed the

CBR250Rs many attributes, the experienced hands who

have logged thousands of miles over decades of riding

motorcycles also found the CBR250R thoroughly enter-taining primarily due to the bikes remarkably light curb

    weight and exceptional handling.

Its easy to predict that entry riders will flock to this new,

sporty and economical ride. And if youre one of those rid-

ers, heres a tip: Dont plan on outgrowing the CBR250R

    any time soon.

The CBR250Rs handling prowess should really come

as no surprise. With a curb weight of only 359 pounds, this

bike follows the mantra of all road racers: Light is right.

Any racer can tell you that a light bike delivers intrinsically

    precise handling, turn-in characteristics, responsiveness

and in-the-saddle feel that heavier bikes often cannot. And

thats a direct parallel that certainly holds true for the

    street-going CBR250R.

New riders are likely the core audience for the

    CBR250R,and after a first-timesamplingourgroupof new-

bies praised several attributes. The 30.5-inch low seat

height makes the bike easy to manage. Electric starting

plus electronic fuel injection make cold starting a no-

brainerjust push the start button and youre ready to go.

Next, the CBR250R offers an easy takeoff routinecrit-

ical to riders still getting the hang of a manual clutch and

manual shifting. The light clutch pull and the torque of the

four-valve four-stroke single make clutch engagement and

standing starts easy for new riders. The clutch friction point

feels broad and easy to engage, and spot-on low-speed

fuel metering along with just the right amount of flywheel

inertia match up well with the wide powerband.

The CBR250R will idle along just fine in First gear at a

tion rides by new riders. Credit also the CBR250Rs

extremely light curb weight; light weight is a gift that

keeps on giving, and with less mass to initiate into

motion from a standing start you simply have physics

working in your favor. At faster speeds, the

CBR250Rs lightness quickly builds rider confidence

    with superb handling traits.

The CBR250R engine offers a pronounced

power feel with sufficient pull through the low end

and midrange to make it a very engaging ride. Peak

torque hits at a modest 7000 rpm, making power

readily accessible. As a result, whether youre run-

ning around town or merging onto the freeway and

cruising at highway speeds, the power builds up

well under acceleration so the CBR feels punchy

and fun. The gearbox shifts easily with well-oiled

clicks, and the six speeds are well matched to the

    powerband and 10,500-rpm rev limit.

When asked to comment on the CBR250R s

chassis and ergonomics, our squad of newish riders

gushed about the fun of the big-bike feel absent the

big-bike weight, and about the remarkable respon-

siveness. The more experienced riders commented

at length on the nuances of how well the CBR250R

fits, handles and feels. The CBR250R just works.

The CBR250R seating position is excellent. The

handlebars place the riders torso in a slight forward

lean thats eminently comfortable, and theres plenty

of legroom. Also, the CBR has a nearly ideal angle to

the handlebarsits very comfortable for long stints

in the saddle. The CBR250R fits well not just for a

250cc beginners bike; its ergonomics are outstand-

    ing compared to anyother motorcycle.

A spirited ride down a twisty road reveals strong

braking performance with the CBR, plus excellent

steering traits. The steering feels remarkably neu-

tral and responsive through all kinds of corners, andsteering effort is light and linear.Again, much of this

handiness is undoubtedly a direct benefit of its light

curb weight. Suspension performance matches up

well with the bikes intent too. Overall, the

CBR250R is light and fun and sporty in handling

and feel, and its a genuine dream around town and

rider. The airflow off the fairing and windscreen is

smooth and free of turbulence and back-eddies,

contributing to a comfortable daylong ride.

The new CBR250R serves as a very well-rounded

package, a fantastic fit for riders new to the sport. It

offers stellar handling along with enjoyable power,

which is always a good combination for beginners.

The CBRs light weight pays dividends in all sorts of

riding conditions, and the bike offers a power feel that

is distinctly entertaining; a chassis that feels modern and up to da

crisp handling, sound suspension and strong brakes; and an ext

comfortable riding position thats both practical and sporty.

There is a reason racing machines are small and light; the

two qualities that make genuine racers so much fun to ride

CBR250R puts these qualities to best use on the street, and

process it sets a new and higher standard for what a beginner

can bea very competent and fun sporting machine, regardl

    your riding experience.

in parking lots. In fact, the CBR250Rs 53.9-inch wheelbase exactly

matches that of the CBR600RR, contributing to its straight-line stability.

So overall, the CBR250R feels like a solid-performing full-sized mount.

Our experienced riders found it easy to change lines mid-corner and

reported confidence in faster turns at varying speeds.

Out on the open road, the CBR250R feels solid and confidence-inspir-

ing at freeway speeds, and it returns a comfy ride. The fairing and wind-

of about 587,000 results youll see

    the famous advertising slogan from

the early 1960s, You Meet the

Nicest People on a Honda. Just

    about every motorcycling enthusiast

nowadays has this catchy little factoid tucked away in his or her gray mat-ter somewhere. And what motorcycle did this well-known catchphrase refer

    to? The little Honda 50.

Understand that beginning riders of this era were steered toward

50cc and 100cc bikes, while expert riders seeking high performance

zeroed in on the really big bikes, which typically displaced 500cc to

650cc. So what were the middleweights of that time? Bikes displac-

ing 250cc to 350cc struck that happy middle ground of being not too

big and not too small; they were just right for all-around use.

Although times and tastes have changed since those early days of

Hondas history inAmerica, the last we checked, the Earths gravitational

pull has not increased one whit; neither has air resistance grown any more

stout. So why cant a 250cc bike be considered just right in this day and

age? Well, when you consider the new CBR 250R, theres really no imped-

iment to such a question. In fact, a very sound argument can be made that

the CBR250R offers plenty of performance, enough to satisfy a great major-

    ity of todays riding applications.

Well even go so far as to say the all-new 2011

CBR250R also brings a fresh take on the fun side of

motorcyclingwhats not to like? Heres a compact

    package combining delightful handling, sophisticated

    technologyand surprisinglygoodoverall performance

with a low buy-in price and economical operating

costs. All of these attributes will certainly appeal to

many riders who, well, simply want to enjoy their time

out on the road. Beginners and experienced hands

alike will appreciate the extreme versatility of this

sporty, lightweight, easy-to-ride and affordable new

    option in the Honda lineup.

Like so many other Hondas, the heart of the

    CBR250R rests in its high-tech four-stroke engine.

Everyone knows that single-cylinder engines are

renowned for offering a broad powerband in a lightand compact packagejust the ticket for this versa-

    tile,359-poundmount. But thisparticularsingle offers

an impressive array of advanced technology as well.

With a bore and stroke of 76mm x 55mm to displace

an actual 249.4cc, the CBR250Rs core dimensions

land very close to those of the current CRF250R

    motocrosser, which measures 76.8mm x 53.8mm for

249cc. Despite this similarity, the CBR250Rs power-

plant is all new and unique to this model alone.

Whereas the CRF250R features a Unicam valve

configuration to actuate its four valves, the four-valve

    CBR250R employs street-oriented dual overhead

camshafts for valve actuation.A quiet and strong Hy-

Vo-type chain spins the camshafts, each of which

incorporates a single lobe. Forked roller rocker arms

actuate the valves, and valve adjustment is via

shims located on top of the valve stems, in lieu of

    screw-type adjusters.

The crankshaft runs in plain bearings for quieter

operation, and the big end of the connecting rod

spins in a needle bearing. A gear-driven counterbal-

ancer shaft helps quell engine vibrations to add to

rider comfort, and its placed so close to the crank-

shaft that the balancer weight passes between the

two crank weightsa design that keeps the engine

as compact as possible while boosting mass central-

ization.Another thoughtful touch along those lines is

the placement of the engine countershaft, which sits

lower than the mainshaft to further reduce the front-

    Engine Cutaway

to-back engine dimension. And liquid cooling

the longevity of the CBR250R engine whi

    enhancing consistent power production unde

    ing riding conditions.

    Another dose of technical sophisticatio

rounds the CBR250Rs use of Hondas Progra

    Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) with a 38mm throttl

for fuel metering. In a nutshell, the PGM-FI s

continuously monitors two basic key va

engine speed and throttle angle, along with

    port pressure, engine-coolant temperatu

atmospheric pressure to control the inject

quantity. Calculation of these variables is rep

many times every second to ensure the corre

ture for existing conditions. Net result: o

engine performance and remarkably crisp tresponse over a wide operating range, along

clean burn. Naturally, this arrangement also fe

    an auto-enriching system incorporated in

PGM-FI setup, thereby eliminating the nee

manual choke. In addition, this advanced P

system incorporates an Idle Air Control Valve

to minimize torque reaction and smooth resp

to small changes in throttle position. This is a

plished through gradual reductions of air a

intake when the throttle is opened and closed

nderstand that those early Superbikes, like the vast majority

bikes from that simpler time, were what we would now call

andards or naked bikes, and for good reason: Not much

se in the way of pure street bikes existed during that era.

ey were indeed the standard machines of the day, but such

abel was no handicap; their broad-ranging versatility only

ade these high-performance motorcycles all the more desir-

le in the eyes of the beholder since they could function in so

    anyreal-worldrolesdaily commutes, a quicktrip downyour

vorite twisty backroad or even cross-country travel.

Fast-forward to the present and we find that in form and

nction, todaysSuperbikeshave traveled a longevolutionaryth far afield from the class origins. Now factory-fitted with

eek, wind-cheating bodywork and endowed with very com-

tted race-oriented ergonomics, todays Superbikes have

    ed toward a racetrack bias.

So now we return to a concept with an enduring correct-

ss of design: the Superbike as standard, as seen in the

11 CB1000R. This is a Honda with roots that stretch back

the first-ever four-cylinder production motorcycle, the clas-

    c 1969 CB750K0, a machine that single-handedly intro-

ced the concept of what a genuine Superbike should be; to

s day, the vast majority of hyper-sport machines follow its

ine-four formula. Yet at the same time the CB1000R carries

sport/racing heritage so modernand effectivethat it will

ract many of the most sophisticated and demanding of

    days riders.

Perhaps the most endearing attribute of the CB1000R as

naked bike is its extremely accommodating seating

rangements. No racer crouch here; just a roomy, comfort-

le fit with plenty of legroom and natural arm/back/neck

gles that keep the rider poised in a slight forward lean to

set the oncoming airstream. These ergonomics work mar-

lously well for every type of street riding you can encounter,

d in those thrilling early days of Superbike racing, such a

ing stance served adequately for on-track competition at

    eeds well into triple digits.

But such comfy and versatile rider accommodations do not

ake the CB1000R any less capable as a sportbike. Beneath

clean, essentials-only styling youll find race-proven

uperbike hardware, including a thoroughbred 998cc

with remarkably crisp throttle response over a wid

ating range, along with a clean burn. Since this s

also features an auto-enriching system incorporat

powerplant derived from the CBR1000RR. This compact, light-

    weight and powerful liquid-cooled fuel-injected inline four-cylinder

engine with a bore and stroke of 75mm x 56.5mm has been specif-

ically retuned for a street-savvy ride, churning out impressive

amounts of right-now power concentrated in the low end and

midrange, which is not to say that its lacking one bit up on the top

end. Also following racing conventions, the 16-valve cylinder head

with 29mm intake and 24mm exhaust valves delivers outstanding

flow for optimum combustion characteristics and power production.

Shim-under-bucket valve adjustment provides for dependable oper-

ation even at high engine speeds, and a light but efficient balancer

shaft is mounted close to the crankshaft to enhance mass central-

    ization while quelling engine vibration.

In another nod to racing technology, the CB 1000Rs aluminum-

composite cylinder sleeves are high-pressure-formed from sintered

aluminum powder impregnated with ceramic and graphite. The

lightweight composite sleeves provide enhanced wear resistance

and superior heat dissipation compared to conventional sleeves.

And the crankshaft, main shaft and countershaft are situated in a tri-

angulated configuration, with the countershaft located below the

main shaft to dramatically shorten the overall engine dimensions

    from front to back.

Fuel-mixing chores take place in thoroughly modern fashion

thanks to the CB1000Rs Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) sys-

tem with 36mm throttle bodies. A sophisticated Electronic Control

Unit (ECU) manages the fuel injection system while also controlling

the ignition and emissions systems. This ECU continuously moni-

tors basic key variables in the PGM-FI system, primarily engine

speed and throttle angle, along with intake-port pressure, engine-

coolant temperature and atmospheric pressure to control the

injected fuel quantity. Although existing riding conditions will vary,

the ECU calculates these variables in a constant and very rapid

mannermany times every secondto ensure delivery of the cor-

rect fuel mixture. The end result is optimal power production along

1981CB900F: FromSupersport toSuperbikeA strong case can be made for the CB900Fs status as

the first Superbike to be shoehorned into a mid-sized

package. Springing forth from the CB750F, the CB900F

featured a slightly shorter wheelbase and a mere 22.5-

pound increase with a whopping 20 percent increase in

displacement. The CB900F served as the basis for

Hondas Superbike racing efforts by Freddie Spencer and

    Mike Baldwin, adding further prestige.

1983CB1100F: SupersportsGo LargeAll of the attributes of the CB900Fplus a lot more

1062cc in displacement while tacking on a trifling 8.5

    poundsto becomethe quickestandfastest bike ofthatera.

It was the apexof engineering refinement for the air-cooled

four-cylinder series, and a worthy representative at that.

hat very thought made Andy Mitchell, Director of Vineyard

Operations for Hahn Family Wines in Soledad, located in

Californias scenic and historic Salinas Valley, burst out in laughter.

We have so many different tasks at so many different levels its

pretty much impossible to count how many different things need to

get done around here, Mitchell said. Understand that we have to

cover everything from preparing bare land and planting vines to car-

ing for the vines, harvesting grapes and creating the various wines

to selling our wines to wholesalers plus individuals at the retail level

who visit our tasting room. Thats not to mention special corporate

events and weddings held here on the grounds and so much more.

Things keep hopping around here pretty much seven days a week,

    all year long.

The various vineyards established for the eight labels marketed

by Hahn Family Wines add up to 1166 planted acres, and that

equals miles and miles of rows of vines that need to be inspectedand maintained.

RancherAT with the automatic transmission for our work crew, and

gopher control or just moving men and supplies from one planted

block to another, the Ranchers have proven themselves over and

over. Mostof them arentpretty anymore, buttheykeepon working.

We asked Brad Saunders, CFO of Hahn Family Wines, how their

operation came to standardize on Honda ATVs. He explained, Ive

been inthe winebusiness formanyyears, and Iveworkedat a num-

ber of wineries. In addition, Im an off-road riding enthusiast; my

whole family rides, and Ive personally seen how well Honda CRFs

hold up under my boys. But this is business; a while back when the

    wineryI waswithusedassortedATVs,I gatheredup allthefinancials

    relatedtoATV expensesand ranthenumbers.It turnedout wewere

spending considerably less on maintenance and repairs for the

Hondas compared to other brandsthe numbers told the whole

story. Sonow weve developeda homogeneous fleetof Hondas, and

that simplifies maintenance and repairs, which helps keep costs

    down and profitability up.

Regarding the use of the Big Red MUV at the Hahn vineyard,

Saunders said, Besides taking care of many different jobs around

thewinery, theBig Redshavetaken ona very uniquerole. On a reg-

ular basis, we have wholesale wine buyers come on site for a vine-

yard tour so they can get to know us better as a winery. We used to

ention the state of Wisconsin, and the word cheese quickly creeps

into the conversation. Rightly so, because the people of Wisconsin

are proud of the 600-plus varieties of artisan cheese produced there. Cheese

aside, Wisconsin also boasts some great riding roads, stunning scenery and

unique attractions that make it a must-see destination.

GreatRiverRoadNationalScenicBywayJust getting to Wisconsin can be half the fun if you ride a portion of the Great

    RiverRoad National ScenicByway,which skirtsthe Wisconsin-Iowa-Minnesota

border. The 2,000-mile road runs from the Canadian border down to the Gulf

Coast, incorporating roadsthat border theMississippi Riverin Arkansas,Illinois,

Iowa, Minnesota, Mississippi and Wisconsin. The historic importance of the

mighty Mississippi is still evident in the 18th-century riverside towns and leg-

endary Hopewell Indian mounds that lie along the route.

For a glimpse into the lives of Wisconsins earliest inhabitants, stop at

    TrempealeauMountaininsidePerrot StatePark, justoff StateHighway 35near

the town of Trempealeau. The mountain, which is bordered by the Mississippi

andTrempealeau Rivers,is oneof onlythree solid-rockislandsalong theentire

stretch of the Mississippi, and it served as a navigational landmark for early

river travelers. Perrots numerous Native American mounds and burial and

habitation sites make it a rich archeological treasure. Several miles of hiking

trails are also located within the park, as is a canoe trail that winds through

Trempealeau Bay. Canoe and kayak rentals are available in the park.

northernmost tip of the state to reach the

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Of the

areas 22 islands, 21 are included in the national

shores of Lake Superior and the dramatic sand-

    well worth the ride.

AirVenture Oshkosh, the Experimental Aircraft Association s Annual Fly-In

Convention, billed as the worlds greatest aviation celebration. Since its

first event in 1953, AirVenture Oshkosh has enjoyed explosive growth:

Over 10,000 antique, classic and homebuilt aircraft are now on hand for

the weeklong annual event, which normally takes place during the last

week of July and attracts over a half-million visitors.

MilwaukeeNo trip to Wisconsin would be complete without a stop in Milwaukee,

famous for everything from beer to bratwurst. Head south on Highway 41from Oshkosh, making a slight detour at the town of Theresa, where you

will find Widmer s Cheese Cellar, the only factory inAmerica still using real

bricks in the production of brick cheese. (Should your love affair with

cheese leave you longing for more, check out Wisconsin Online s Cheese

Factory Map to incorporate additional tours into your itinerary.)

A must-see is the Milwaukee Art Museum, nestled on the shores of Lake

Michigan in the downtown area. Each year, over 300,000 visitors enjoy its

20,000 works of art. A recent exhibit featured artist Andy Warhol, and on per-

manent display are works by Renoir, Picasso and Winslow Homer. The

museums unprecedented architecture is worthy of notable praise: Its Burke

Brise Soleil is a moveable, wing-like sunscreen atop the glass-enclosedWindhover Hall. The wings open in the morning with the museum, open and

close at midday and close again in the evening when the museum closes.

Even if you are not in the mood for art, the museums Cudahy Gardens

offer the perfect getaway for those in need of some quiet contemplation.

Suffice it to say, you could spend a month of Sundays in Milwaukee

and still not see everything this great town has to offer. From Lake

Michigan sails to fresh sausages and tours of the Jelly Belly Visitor

Center (who knew?), this town rarely sleeps.

WisconsinDellsRound out your trip to Wisconsin at one of the

states most beautiful and famous landmarks:

the Wisconsin Dells. This quaint town is jam-

packed with things to do, and it will appeal to just

about anyone. From climbing aboard a land-to-

water Duck for a river excursion, to splashing

your way through one of several indoor/outdoorwater parks, to dinner in the idyllic downtown

area, this is one place where you can take life as

fast or as slow as you wish.

Feeling nostalgic? Take a step back in time

at the nearby Big Sky Drive-In Theater, or wit-

ness natures comeback at the International

Crane Foundation, which is dedicated to pre-

serving the worldwide crane population. Non-

migratory cranes representing all 15 of the

worlds species live at the center, which is open

from April through October (weekends onlyduring spring and fall).

With so many different locations and activi-

ties to choose from, be sure to plan enough

time to take in all that Wisconsin has to offer.

And while Wisconsin makes a great getaway

spot by car, by motorcycle it becomes an unfor-

    gettable adventure.
