Problem Identification:

There are many challenges that go into something as simple as sitting down, particularly with regards to

seating. In the case of seating for sportsman’s chairs, the challenges arise immensely. Not only does a

chair have to be capable of supporting its user during normal activities, but also during high activity and

mechanical stress events such as fishing and other sporting events. A Sportsman’s chair also has to deal

with terrains that are not ideal on many occasions, such as from banks, boats, and at sporting events,

where substandard ground conditions can hamper a chairs ability to perform. Furthermore, because of

these various locations of use, it is necessary for a sportsman’s chair to be collapsible for carrying and

storage. While many designs for this brand of chair exist, there is no one single solution to meeting the

challenges. This project seeks to provide yet another solution to the following set of challenges:

1. To create a design for a sportsman’s chair that can be used for fishing, camping, at sporting

events, and for other purposes.

2. To create a design that is collapsible for ease in carrying and storage.

Design Analysis

The primary success or failure of a chair is highly dependent on its level of comfort. Although a

sportsman’s chair is designed to be in rugged environments, users do not want a rugged feeling chair to

match. Because of the harshness of the conditions that the design would be exposed to, it is necessary

to seal the sensitive components of the chair within a protective shell to prevent against corrosion and

interference due to external materials. The primary area where this is important is the rotational unit of

the chair. Because of this, this design calls for an interlocking cub that the inner shaft sits within in order

to prevent damage to the internal components. These shaft cups hold the critical folding part of the

design, enabling the upper and lower segments to come together to be folded into a transportable

option. These cups attach to the support ring on either side, which the fabrics of the seat connect to.

This allows for a lightweight seating material, a layer of strong, waterproof fabric, to be utilized for the

design. In order to further increase the strength of the chair material, U-bolts are placed through the

support structure to connect to the fabric. This both increases the strength of the fabric through

additional connection points, and also helps to prevent slipping of the fabric over the chairs support

structure. The U-bolts are shortened, and their ends are capped to prevent dangerous sharp edges and

burrs. The chairs lower body structure then connects to several rotation points, which connect to the

legs of the chair. These legs are designed to be moveable from a upright standing position to a

collapsed position through the use of the inner pin design. This allows the user to pull on the leg’s foot

to free the leg and rotate it into its stored position, where it is kept in place through elastic straps. The

individual foot-pad designs allow for mass manufacture of the sub-assembly, having to stock less repair

parts, and also giving greater flexibility for the chair to handle rough terrain.

The Upper segment of the chair contains a similar attachment structure as the lower segment

for the fabric, allowing high strength at this point. The upper segment also contains the arms of the

Page 5: MAE 377 Report

chair, which are connected through a friction mounted box plate and rotate around a central gear to

produce a smooth travel for the arms movement.

All materials, with the exception of some fasteners and the arms themselves, are constructed

out of lightweight Aluminum Alloy. This allows for weigh savings over a conventional metal, while still

retaining significant strength in the system. Further details on the design parts can be found below in

the Parts Analysis table.
