THE SETTINGTHE ARTISTIC EXPERIENCE The ¡Olé, Cantemos en Madrid! choral event is focused on performing music primarily by contemporary as well as historic composers from Spain and Latin America. Dr. Angel M. Vázquez-Ramos is selecting an eclectic repertoire of songs that connect with the traditions of Spain and the influence that Spanish composers had on the development of Latin American music. ¡Olé, Cantemos en Madrid! is a total immersion experience into Spanish culture from music to architecture, history, food and language.

MADRID, SPAINMadrid has a rich cultural life with an abundance of performances taking place year round. Opera, symphonic concerts, chamber music, recitals, and choral music are all to be found. Madrid boasts three full-time major symphony orchestras, which is impressive for a city of 3 million people. The music of Spain has a long history and played an important role in the development of Western and Latin American music especially from the 15th through the early 17th century. Spanish music is often associated with traditional styles such as flamenco and classical guitar. While these forms of music are common, there are many different traditional music and dance styles across the regions. For example, music from the north-west is heavily reliant on bagpipes, the jota is widespread in the center and north of the country, and flamenco originated in the south. The breadth of musical innovation can be seen in composers like Tomás Luis de Victoria, styles like the zarzuela of Spanish opera, the ballet of Manuel de Falla, and the classical guitar music of Francisco Tárrega.
