I hope your children are settled back in a routine and are enjoying their new teachers and classmates. Thank you to the families that have joined the PTO. We have 340 memberships with more joining daily. It is not too late to join the PTO, make a PACEsetter donation or buy MSE t-shirts. Under the PTO tab on the MSE website, there are forms to print, fill out and turn into the office as well as the link to purchase online. Several of the PTO committees are in full swing and are working to prepare for upcoming events. We are very fortunate to have such hard working parents who dedicate their time to ensure a successful school year for us all to enjoy. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions! Courtney Dean [email protected] FROM OUR PRINCIPAL Thank you all for a great beginning to a new school year. The students have transitioned into new grades with new teachers and new routines very well. I am so proud of all the students who completed their summer packet and were able to enjoy a snow cone as a reward. Thank you parents for encouraging your students to read and work a little throughout the summer. That little bit of practice makes the transition into a new year so much easier for our students. I am excited about the great opportunities that await us with the new year. There will be so many great opportunities to learn, build relationships, and help others. We will continue our focus on being kind and looking for opportunities to help and encourage others. There are many physical, emotional, and mental health benefits associated with kindness. As the minds and bodies of our students grow, it is clear that they require a healthy dose of warm-and-fuzzies to thrive as happy, well-rounded individuals. As we look forward to things to come during this school year, we are excited about the new playground we will be installing this fall. Plans are in the works and we are hoping to start construction in October. Thank you to our PTO for helping fund this project for us. Thank you for your commitment and support of Madison Station. Working together, we will accomplish much! If I may ever be of assistance to you, please do not hesitate to call or email me at [email protected]. • Each month, we will share with you information related to each goal:

    Madison Station’s 3 Major Goals!

Goal 1: Academic Excellence (focusing on a child’s mind)

The mission of our school is to provide each child with a solid foundation in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. Beginning in kindergarten, the MS College and Career Readiness Standards are followed. Madison Station teachers use the standards as the basis for planning units of study. These standards can be found at www.madison-schools.com. Throughout the year, our students are given universal screeners to determine present levels as well as identify students that need additional support. Along with these, our teachers use data received from many sources to provide information to use as they instruct students. At the end of the school year, our students take the state mandated MAP (Questar) assessments. Our goal is to instruct each child on his or her level and to advance each child academically. We were thrilled to be named an A school for the 2015-2016 school year data and to be in the top 3 elementary schools in the state! Congratulations to our students and teachers! Goal 2: Arts Integration (focusing on a child’s heart/soul)

In 2000, Madison Station partnered with the Mississippi Arts Commission through a Whole Schools grant initiative. The goal of the grant was to train teachers to integrate the arts into every aspect of the curriculum. Our “Arts Create Excellence” (ACE) program was established and since 2000 over $500,000.00 has been secured and spent on arts initiatives at Madison Station.

During the 2017-2018 school year, we remain committed to the following arts goals:

    1. The academic growth of Madison Station students will be enhanced through the infusion of the arts into all curriculum subjects. 2. Students will gain knowledge and skills in all art disciplines. 3. Madison Station teachers and administrators will grow professionally and personally through their involvement with the arts. 4. Madison Station’s parents and community will be engaged in enhancing and promoting student learning through the arts. From the featured artist artwork that hangs in the foyer each month, to student created artwork in the halls, to classical music played at the beginning of each day to movement and dance body breaks throughout the day, Madison Station students are truly immersed in the arts! Thanks MSE PTO for providing the funding for our 3-5 grade art teacher, for providing KidsArt instruction to 1-5th grade students, funding theater performances and guests artists and authors during the year.

Goal 3: Fitness and Wellness (focusing on a child’s body)

Madison Station has a history of excellence in the physical education classroom. Our teachers, Coach Crawford and Coach Shows, have been recognized throughout the state for their innovative approach to helping children stay fit. Our students have participated in and scored well in the Presidential Fitness Challenge program. Using brain and body research, classroom teachers are incorporating movement activities in the classrooms, encouraging students to eat healthy snacks and drink water, as well as teaching students how to care for their bodies.

to help with our committee, please email

    [email protected].

    MSE school pictures coming soon!

September 19th for 3rd-5th grades September 20th for K-2nd grades

Everyone will have photos made for the yearbook. Picture

order forms will be distributed mid-September.

    Madison Station Policy

Our teachers and staff will not “friend” parents or students on social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, etc.

Car Rider Tips: To assist us in getting all students in the building as quickly as possible, we are asking your help in the following each morning:

    1. Please pull all the way down to unload your child. Do not stop at the back or front doors.

    2. Please have children on the right side of the car so that no one has to walk in front or behind cars.

    3. Please have your child unbuckled, shoes on, backpacks ready, and kisses given, etc. when you stop.

    4. Please do not wait for the car door to be opened. We do not have enough adults to physically open every door.

    Appreciation

    September Artist of the Month

Bj Weeks is a multimedia artist with a studio and gallery

showroom off of Gluckstadt Road. Her works are represented

in galleries and designer showrooms across the

Southeast. Her paintings have been exhibited and purchased

for personal collections in many cities across the country

including Manhattan, Houston, Atlanta, Los Angeles,

Rosemary Beach, and many others. In Mississippi, 24 cities

currently promote and display her art. In addition to these

venues, she works directly with clients on commissioned

pieces. She also shares her passion for art by teaching and

hosting fun interaction paint parties in her studio; Splatter

    Paint Parties.

Bj’s love of color, as represented in her work, comes from the

lucid memories she holds living on the Beautiful Gulf of

Mexico…. The large green oaks, the gorgeous sunsets and the

images of life on the coast are all embodied in her creativity. “I am truly humbled each time my works speaks to

someone. When my musings, expressed on canvas, evoke a

feeling or emotion in another, our souls are connected. I feel

as though I am coloring the world one painting at a time.

Bj is proud to partner with Studio 54/56 in their designs of Heirloom Reflections. These unique and one of a kind antique frames will be a keepsake which can be passed down for generations. A few samples will be on display; all pieces are custom orders. Visit the school to see these amazing pieces of work.
