2010-2011 Library Board

Dear Friends:

The City of Madison’s public libraries continue to thrive and evolve as part of a strong community that values the knowledge available in libraries. All nine branches serve as important neighborhood anchors and centers of community learning. 160,000 library card-holding Madison citizens take advantage of what our library offers, including:

· Free access to books, ebooks and other digital content that are educational resources for learners of all ages and incomes.· Computers and internet access, plus assistance and training with computers, internet–related technology, and digital devices for persons of all skill levels. · Customized, on-call research assistance on any and all topics via online support, social media and a web site featuring research help and recommendations. · Educational events, classes and programs for people of all ages, often in conjunction with other community agencies. · Needed public spaces for neighborhood meetings, tutoring, social services and literacy outreach

As we reflect on 2009-2010, the Library Board’s highlights include:· The new 20,000 square foot Sequoya Branch became a state-wide leader in 2009, with the highest circulation of any library building in Wisconsin. · The 2010 opening of the new Goodman South Madison Branch, as part of the City’s plan for redevelopment of a new Villager Mall – now known as the Village on Park – helped to develop a focus for economic and neighborhood development for Madison’s South Side. Both Sequoya and Goodman South meet the City’s energy and sustainability policies as LEED-Silver certified. · The Library Board and the City of Madison spent 2010 developing plans for a new Central Library to replace the current building, built in 1965. The proposed 120,000 square foot Central Library is expected to be open in late summer/fall of 2013 and will offer many new 21st century amenities including: access to power building-wide, small and large meeting rooms, study spaces for group and individual use, a partial green roof, and a goal of LEED – Gold certification to meet the City’s sustainability policies.

We are proud to be part of a community that values libraries and their contributions to a learning environment, and we are especially proud of our association with community partners that work with us to offer the best library services possible - in particular, the Madison Public Library Foundation, the Madison Community Foundation, and the Branch Friends’ groups - all of which continue to contribute to make Madison’s Libraries the best they can be.

Dear Friends:

On behalf of the board and staff of Madison Public Library Foundation, thank you for your part in making 2009 and 2010 outstanding and successful years. We feel incredibly blessed to be able to say that. The struggling economy has made life difficult for many people. But in these times, the library lives up to its mission to serve everyone in the community, providing internet access, job search assistance, tax help, and reading and recreation, at a time when things can seem overwhelming. Madison Public Library is proud to be a part of the solution – part of the fabric of a resilient community that retains optimism and pride even in a challenging environment.

There have been many great moments in the past two years at the foundation. The Sequoya Endowment campaign raised $165,000, continuing a practice of establishing funds for the long-term support of the branch libraries. At the end of 2010, the brand-new Goodman South Madison Library replaced a small and well-worn branch in the Villager Mall. This new library received tremendous community support – our $630,000 commitment to the city was paid in full and over $100,000 in additional contributions will be used to establish the endowment for that branch. These investments have resulted in exactly what we hoped for … active, vibrant, community-based facilities that serve the diverse population of Madison. We hope that includes you, and that you are enjoying all that your neighborhood library has to offer.

What lies ahead for the foundation will be the most exciting and daunting of tasks - raising $8.5 million to build a new Central Library. This long overdue project will have a transformative effect on the downtown and all of Madison, and on the South Central Library System as a whole. What will blossom from the old Central location will be a creative, user-friendly, state of the art new library which will be a model for urban libraries across the nation. The time has come to bring a world-class library to our world-class city.

The progress and success of the foundation rest squarely on the shoulders of our many supporters. You lift us up, and we are continually humbled by the generosity of our community. Through its annual fund donations the foundation aims to meet the needs of the library beyond the basic programs funded by the city budget. Highlights of the grants made in the last two years show that we are seeding new programs, supporting technological advances, and responding to community needs. We are also maintaining a consistent practice of endowment investments – in good times and hard times – building both the general endowment and the branch endowments so that our efforts are equally impactful and sustainable.

Thank you for being a friend of Madison Public Library. We hope to see you at “your library” soon.

Sincerely,

Richard G. ChandlerPresident of the Board of DirectorsMadison Public Library Foundation

InsPIRIng sPAcesToday’s public libraries provide more than just books. They serve as community centers, providing space for learning and collaboration. As the needs of the community keep growing, so do the branches! Since the opening of the new Sequoya branch in 2008, the Madison Public Library Foundation funding has helped the Madison Public Library system build or remodel several of its branches, expanding floor-space and programming in the process.

The new Sequoya branch became so popular that the Madison Public Library Foundation funded additional Sunday hours to keep up with the busy branch. The Monroe Street Branch was renovated and refreshed

from carpet to ceiling, and the Goodman South Madison Branch nearly quadrupled in size, increasing community space and technological capacity.

At the same time, citizens and community leaders gathered to help plan for a new Central Library. On December 7, 2010, after input from community members and library staff, architects from Meyer, Scherer & Rockcastle and Potter Lawson presented schematic designs for a new Central Library. Construction is planned to begin will begin fall of 2011.

Monroe street’s new Look During its brief closing in the summer of 2009, eager neighbors peeked through the front windows of the branch, hoping for a glimpse of the renovations happening inside. At the reopening ceremony in September, they walked into a brighter, more beautiful library space.

In an effort to uplift the Monroe Street Branch financially, the community rallied support from a variety of donors including the City of Madison, the Madison Public Library Foundation, the Monroe Street Library League, neighborhood associations and individual donors. They not only saved their library, they made it better.

“It’s inspiring to see a library with true support from its community,” Orange Schroeder, chair of the Monroe Street Library League, said. The recent renovations of the Monroe Street Branch facilities will, “truly match the commitment and passion of staff and patrons,” Schroeder said.

sundays at sequoyaOnly one year after its re-opening in late 2008, the new 20,000 square foot Sequoya Branch Library claimed the 2009 title for the highest circulation of any library building in the state of Wisconsin. To account for the branch’s growing use, the Madison Public Library Foundation granted $19,000 to establish Sunday hours from October-April. This provides more time for patrons to enjoy educational programs for children and adults, and to take advantage of comfortable meeting spaces, high-speed internet connections, and wireless access.

“Libraries are at the heart of every community,” Madison Community Foundation President Kathleen Woit said, as construction wrapped up at Goodman South Madison. The branch, named in honor of philanthropists Irwin A. and Robert D. Goodman has certainly proved her right on Madison’s south side.

The added space has made more room for collections and programs that benefit community members of all ages. The new children’s area, made possible by a $200,000 donation from the Madison Community Foundation, houses the Mae Mitchell multicultural children’s literature collection. Comprised of library books in Spanish and other world languages, the collection caters to the bilingual needs of the Goodman South neighborhood. The branch also expanded their literacy and ESL, English as a Second Language, programming for adults and sponsored a collection devoted to informed decision-making about life choices related to education, employment, and housing.

“Irwin and Bob Goodman were both avid readers and believed that libraries are part of a strong foundation for a neighborhood,” said E. G. Schramka, a Goodman Foundation board member,“They would be proud and humbled to be associated with the South Madison Branch Library.”

From concept to construction In 2010, the City embarked on a new library construction project – a rebuild of the 65-year-old Central Library. The architectural firms of Potter Lawson and Meye Scherer & Rockcastle held regular public meetings to help create the design for a new Central that reflects community needs and interests in its nearly 120,000 square feet. The public requested convenient access to power throughout the building, small and larger meeting rooms for group use and integration of green technology. The final design marries public suggestions with best practices in modern libraries. Construction will begin by the end of 2011 with an opening date in summer of 2013.

The Madison Public Library Foundation launched the Learning for a Lifetime capital campaign in 2010 to raise $8.5 million that, together with public funding and New Market Tax credits, will pay for the $30 million project.

As part of its mission to foster lifelong learning, all the nine branches of the Madison Public Library offer a wide array of events and classes. In 2009 and again in 2010, over 67,000 visitors participated in a library program. From preschool story time to community writing assistance, the programs are designed to fit participants’ needs at every stage of life.

For a full list of the library’s events and classes, visit the Madison Public Library website: www.madisonpubliclibrary.org.

Summer ReadingThe Library’s most anticipated youth program is the annual Summer Vacation Reading program. Sponsored in part by the Madison Public Library Foundation, the program keeps school-aged kids focused on reading - even when school’s out - with rewards like Madison Mallards tickets, coupons from local restaurants and free books.

Library Grants provide community assistance

The Job Hunt • Job assistance training sessions will increase at the Central Library and expand to other branches like Hawthorne and Meadowridge. Funded by a $15,590 federal LSTA (Library Services and Technology Act) grant for 2010, the sessions include one-on-one meetings to help with resumes, cover letters, email, online job applications and general computer skills.

• In partnership with VISTA (Volunteers in Service To America), the Library offers classes and one-on-one sessions to help people hone new technical skills to increase their employability, find job opportunities and sharpen their application and interview skills, especially in a slowly recovering economy.

Financial Help• The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) offers free tax help to library patrons in spring. The program is designed for low-income, handicapped or elderly citizens and is also available for non native speakers. Four libraries, Central, Lakeview, Pinney and Sequoya, offered the free service from January to April.

• Second Harvest Foodbank helps those applying for FoodShare with the guidance of a FoodShare specialist.

Writing Support Funded by a grant from the Evjue Foundation, The UW-Madison Writing Center offers writing assistance at the local library branches. This service gives advice on resumes, job, applications, newsletters and articles.

A Tribute to Helen Matheson Rupp

Helen Matheson Rupp, the first woman executive at the Wisconsin State Journal, died in 2010 at age 88. Dedicated to her work as a journalist, she stayed at the State Journal from 1942 until her retirement in 1977. She first worked as a reporter and feature writer, later becoming Sunday editor in 1949 and assistant manager in 1957. Upon her retirement in 1977, she was awarded the YWCA-Madison’s Women of Distinction Award for community service, professional achievement, integrity, leadership, and dedication to the lives of others.

After retirement, Matheson Rupp wrote on a freelance basis, traveled extensively and remained active in many professional and community organizations, many of them related to reading, history and civic engagement.

Ken Frazier, former Director of UW-Madison’s General Library System, said “she believed that libraries were places that could inspire people…Her

career was devoted to writing and reading—and she herself was a great example of someone who never stopped being interested in learning new things.”

Rupp left the Madison Public Library Foundation an unrestricted $3,472,000 in her estate. The Foundation’s board determined it will use $1,472,000 to seed the campaign for the new Central Library to ensure the success of the campaign in reaching its $8 million goal by 2013. And in keeping with the Foundation’s strong commitment to insuring future support for the entire Madison Public Library system, $2 million from the Rupp bequest has been reserved for the permanent endowment.

“Helen Matheson Rupp’s generosity will have a long-lasting impact on Madison’s public libraries and the people who rely on them,” said Rick Chandler, President of the Madison Public Library Foundation Board. “And our plan is that through the new Central Library and the endowment generations to come will benefit from this amazing gift.”
