WHAT’S INSIDE: With Spring just days away, it seems like everyone is talking Spring break and even summer vacation already. I wish I was going somewhere warm for Spring break. Maybe the warm will just come here instead and bring several inches of rain for all of us to fill the ponds and creeks and lakes!

As we look ahead to summer, many are thinking of vacations for the family and camps that we can attend. Some of you may have heard in the past week or so about our Iowa 4-H Center in Madrid cutting back on camping programs for this summer. It is true. The resident and day camps that have been available in the past, are not going to be offered this summer. The press release and FAQ’s statement are on the following pages. Please read through them. If you still have questions, let me know and I will do my best to find answers for you.

With this being the case, I would like to know how many of you would be interested in attending a camping experience this summer at the Iowa 4-H Center. Our region is trying to figure out what we can do to accommodate the youth and give that great outdoor experience that we are used to.

Please let me know as soon as possible if you are interested so that we can make a well informed decision about this summer.

Thank you,

MADISON COUNTY EXTENSION

Summer 2013 4-H Camping Continues, with Changes, at Iowa 4-H Center Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is committed to maintaining a sustainable 4-H youth development pro-gram that provides quality educational programs for Iowa youth — including camping experiences. However, there will be some changes in the camping experiences that the Iowa 4-H Program will offer at the Iowa 4-H Center this summer. “The original intent was to offer a full camp schedule for summer 2013 at the Iowa 4-H Center near Madrid,” said Cathann Kress, vice president for ISU Extension and Out-reach. “However, we must limit the scope of programming we are able to offer at the center, due to staff changes and budget realities.”

The 4-H camp program specialist has resigned to take anoth-er position, said LuAnn Johansen, assistant director for the Iowa 4-H program. Program staff are being hired to facilitate camp programs including archery, aquatics, climbing wall, creek walks and science.

The traditional special interest residential and day camps offered to the general public will not be available this sum-mer. All existing rental commitments at the Iowa 4-H Center are being honored. However, no additional non-4-H rentals are being secured by the Iowa 4-H Program.

Some of the 4-H camps that have been confirmed at the center from June through early August include Southwest Iowa Camp, North Central Region 6 Camp, ISU Extension Region 15 Camp, Photography Camp, Design Condensed Camp, Pocahontas County Day Camp and Tri-County (Story, Boone, Marshall) Junior Camp. The Immersion in Wellness camp also will continue at the Iowa 4-H Center this summer, Johansen said.

“We hope to add other 4-H camping experiences at the cen-ter this summer,” Johansen said. “Camping experiences pro-vided by the Iowa 4-H program extend beyond those camps held solely at the Iowa 4-H Center,” Johansen continued. “ISU Extension and Outreach is committed to providing mul-tiple opportunities for youth to experience camp. Multiple day camps and local overnight camps will continue to be offered throughout the state at other locations tied to our county or regional 4-H programs.”

The ISU Extension and Outreach 4-H Youth Development management team is consulting with camping experts from across the national 4-H system to determine potential solu-tions to enhance and sustain Iowa 4-H camping opportuni-ties into the future, Johansen said.

“K-12 youth outreach is an important niche for Iowa State University and 4-H is our flagship program,” added Kress. “Focusing Extension and Outreach efforts on our core mis-sion will help 4-H in Iowa become a stronger program that reaches more youth, is more efficient and effective, and is widely known as the premiere example of youth outreach in the nation.”

Response to Frequently Asked Questions Regarding the 4-H Camping Program Iowa State University Exten-sion 4-H Youth Development educational programs are head-quartered at Iowa State University campus in Ames and availa-ble through ISU Extension and Outreach offices in all Iowa counties. Will there be 4-H camping at the Iowa 4-H Center in summer 2013? Yes. Iowa State University Extension and Out-reach is committed to maintaining a sustainable 4-H youth de-velopment program that provides quality educational pro-grams for Iowa youth — including camping experiences. How-ever, there will be some changes in the camping experiences that the Iowa 4-H Program will offer at the Iowa 4-H Center this summer. Why will the 4-H camping program change at the Iowa 4-H Center? ISU Extension and Outreach originally planned to offer a full camp schedule for summer 2013 at the Iowa 4-H Center near Madrid. However, we must limit the scope of programming we will offer at the center, because of staff changes and budget realities. The 4-H camp program spe-cialist resigned to take another position. Program staff mem-bers are being hired to facilitate camp programs including ar-chery, aquatics, climbing wall, creek walks, and science. Over the past five years, federal and state funds allocated to ISU Extension and Outreach have decreased while costs to conduct quality, educational camping programs have increased. What will be different at the Iowa 4-H Center this summer? Tradi-tional residential and day camps offered to the general public will not be available at the Iowa 4-H Center. All existing rental commitments at the Iowa 4-H Center are being honored, but no additional non-4-H rentals will be secured by the Iowa 4-H Program. What 4-H camping programs will be offered at the Iowa 4-H Center this summer? Some of the 4-H camps that have been confirmed at the center from June through early August include Southwest Iowa Camp, North Central Region 6 Camp, ISU Extension Region 15 Camp, Photography Camp, De-sign Condensed Camp, Pocahontas County Day Camp and Tri-County (Story, Boone, Marshall) Junior Camp. The Immersion in Wellness camp also will continue. ISU Extension and Out-reach hopes to add other 4-H camping experiences. Does ISU Extension and Outreach offer 4-H camping at any other loca-tions? Multiple day camps and local camps will continue throughout the state at other locations tied to ISU Extension and Outreach county or regional 4-H programs. What is the future outlook for 4-H camping in Iowa? ISU Extension and Outreach is exploring other ways to provide camping opportu-nities to young Iowans in support of our priority to encourage healthy living. The 4-H Management Team is consulting with camping experts from across the national 4-H system to deter-mine potential solutions to enhance and sustain Iowa 4-H camping opportunities. Our educational mission remains our highest priority. Who owns the Iowa 4-H Center? The Iowa 4-H Center, near Madrid, is owned by the Iowa 4-H Foundation. The property consists of more than 1,100 acres of woodlands, meadows, wetlands and fields in the Des Moines River Valley. The Iowa 4-H Foundation is a charitable 501 (c) 3 organization with a volunteer governing board of 26 trustees. What is 4-H? 4-H is the youth program of America’s Cooperative Extension Service. FSQA Questions & Answers

Why FSQA? Iowa 4-Hers produce meat—over thirteen mil-

lion pounds each year—that goes into the American food supply.

Consumers expect a safe, high quality food product.

4-Hers need to know the food production rules and follow them exactly.

What is FSQA? The FSQA program focuses on seven Good Pro-

duction Practices that help ensure the safety of the food you produce.

When 4-Hers meet the 4-H FSQA certification, they also meet the Beef Quality and Pork Quali-ty Assurance certification.

Who needs FSQA? All youth exhibiting swine, beef, sheep, dairy,

poultry, rabbit or goat at the Madison County Fair or Iowa State Fair.

Food Safety & Quality Assurance (FSQA) Training

All youth (4-H and FFA) planning to exhibit rabbit, poultry, beef, sheep, swine, dairy cattle and goats, and meat goats must be Food Safety Quality Assurance (FSQA) certified by June 3, 2013. This training includes youth planning to exhibit breeding and/or market animals! The ONLY countywide FSQA training offered in Madison County will be Sat, Mar 23, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Winterset. Youth in grades 4-6 will attend training from 8-10 AM; youth in grades 7-12 will attend training from 10 AM-Noon. Youth in grades 7-12 also have the option of becoming certi-fied through testing. A testing session will also be held on Sat, Mar 23 from 8:30-10:00 AM at the First Baptist Church. (Just a little hint—the test is not as hard as you might think, so we encourage you to try the test rather than go through a two-hour training.) Testing may also be completed at the Extension Office before June 3—please call or email to schedule. Youth who have tested out in the past—if you passed the Intermediate exam for grades 7th-9th, you will need to recertify by taking the Advanced exam when you are in 10th grade. If you passed the Advanced exam (youth ages 15-18), your certification is current until Dec 31 of the year you turn 19. For more information, contact Maria at the Extension Office.

2013 4-H'ers for 4-H Campaign

The 28th annual 4-H’ers for 4-H Campaign begins March 1. The campaign, conducted by members of the State 4-H Council, coincides with the 2013 Iowa 4-H Youth Conference theme, “Unmask Your Opportunities.” The goal is to raise $29,000 by asking every 4-H club to consider a donation of $2.50 per member.

Why support this campaign? Approximately one-third of the funds support the State 4-H Council program, which in turn provides the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference experience for 8-12th grade 4-H’ers. Almost half of the funds are distributed back to 4-H members in the counties in the form of scholarships for out-of-county 4-H experiences and financial assistance to help cover program development fee costs.

4-H club leaders will soon receive campaign information via email or U.S. mail from the State 4-H Council. This infor-mation also can be found online: https://www.iowa4hfoundation.org/4hersfor4h. Clubs can send con-tributions directly to the Iowa 4-H Foundation or deliver to their county office by May 15. The State 4-H Council appreci-ates everyone’s commitment to help “make the best better” for all Iowa 4-H’ers.

Response to Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Fundraising and the Iowa 4-H Center The mission of the Iowa 4-H Foundation is to provide fi-nancial resources to Iowa youth by raising funds for 4-H programs as needs are defined by ISU Extension and Outreach. The Iowa 4-H Foundation owns the Iowa 4-H Center. For more information regarding the Iowa 4-H Foundation contact: Kris Fish Kuhlmann, Executive Director, (515) 294-1552 [email protected] is the money going that was raised for camper scholarships? Funds raised and designated for camper scholarships have been used for that purpose. At this point, it is unclear how any unused funds will be expended. The Iowa 4-H Foundation will be working with ISU Extension and Outreach to identify overall needs for the 4-H camping program and put together a coordinated strategy. It is the desire of the Foundation to utilize funds as they were originally intended by donors. As such, it would be the Foundation’s mission to utilize funds for camps that will be delivered this year. If this is not the case, the Iowa 4-H Foundation will then be able to provide information to donors so they can determine how they want to manage their contribution. Where did the funds go that were raised for the Adventure Race? The proceeds from the Adventure race first paid for expenses. The remaining funds were placed in the 4-H summer camp scholarship fund. Final determination of the funds’ use will be evaluated as the Iowa 4-H Foundation discusses the future of 4-H camping at the Iowa 4-H Center with ISU Extension and Outreach, with the intended fundraising purpose foremost in mind. What happens to the money raised for the safe rooms at the Iowa 4-H Center? Money raised for the safe rooms was designated specifically for that project. The Iowa 4-H Foundation is in the process of contacting these donors to determine how they want to manage their contributions. Will there be any opportunity to raise funds to support the camp? The Iowa 4-H Foundation has a meeting planned with ISU Extension and Outreach in early March to discuss 4-H camp issues as related to the involvement of the Iowa 4-H Foundation. If that meeting indicates ISU Extension and Outreach’s ongoing support for use of the Iowa 4-H Center, it is expected that a plan will be developed to raise funds to support longevity of the center.
