Many of us have a “bucket list”. Things we want to see and do before…well…I’ll just say it, before we die. Some of you may have visited Madison before, but for those of you contemplating a visit, we think you’ll find our wonderful little town “bucket list” worthy.
The mighty Ohio River snakes its way through our downtown, providing a natural barrier between Southern Indiana and Kentucky, it is an innate draw to those visiting our area. Our considerable collection of 19th century architecture, charming shops, wineries, historic sites and numerous events make Madison, a popular destination for the young and the young at heart.
Our location makes us easily accessible to 4 major interstates (I-65, I-71, I-75 & I-64) each within a 50 mile (or less) radius. Whether you’re traveling I-64, I-71, or I-75, each route provides an easy approach to Madison across our brand new innovative bridge (more on that later). Plus, we are only a short 20 miles east of I-65 and worth the trip!
Are We on Your “Bucket List”?
This is just a small sampling of the things to see and do in Madison. So whether you’re checking things off your “bucket list” or just looking for great place to visit, we think we’re the perfect destination. Why don’t you check us out and see for yourself?
Visit one of southern Indiana’s natural hidden treasures!
Clifty Falls State Park is minutes from downtown and boasts over 1500 acres
of trails, majestic waterfalls and the natural beauty of pristine terrain. Clifty Inn is
nestled just inside the park and it overlooks the valley with a sweeping view of
the river in the distance.
Enjoy a Homegrown Festival! We have group friendly events throughout the year beginning in May with
our RiverRoots Music & Folk Arts Festival and winding down in November
and December with the Nights Before Christmas Candlelight Tour of Homes.
We also feature Barbeque and Blues in August with our nationally acclaimed
Madison Ribberfest, Madison Regatta in July and Madison Chautauqua Festival
of the Arts in September, when our entire downtown is transformed into a
shopper’s paradise.
See the eighth Wonder of the World
(at least, we think it should be!) We are excited to announce the completion of the Milton-Madison bridge
project. This endeavor has taken the better part of three years to complete and
has provided locals and visitors front row seats to this innovative concept. The
bridge replacement method used, known as “superstructure replacement,” was
the fastest and most cost effective way to build a safe new bridge, while having
the least impact on our historic community and the surrounding environment.
During construction a new steel truss was built and then placed on temporary
piers while the existing piers underwent a major refurbishing to bring them up
to today’s standards. The original bridge was then demolished in a series of
planned implosions. The 2,427 foot truss was then slid on steel rails and plates
to the existing piers. This project was deemed the fastest modern- day bridge
built across the Ohio River and is contained entirely within the original footprint
of the old bridge.
Experience the thrill of a New Zealand jet boat ride
without leaving the states! For thrill seekers, we offer the only jet boat rides on the Ohio River! Rockin’
Thunder is our newest attraction with spins, slides and fishtails galore! Prepare
to get wet! If this sounds like a little too much fun and excitement, a scenic ride
or dinner cruise are offered for those a little fainter of heart.

Day One
9:30 A.M. Begin your visit at the Madison Visitors Center, located in Madison’s downtown historic district. We have a great gift shop, a ten minute video, and brochures for almost every county in Indiana.
10:00 A.M. Just next door is the Jefferson Co. History Center and Railroad Museum. Artwork by area artisans is on display along with various exhibits pertaining to local history. Adjacent to the History Center is the restored Madison Railroad Station, a brick Victorian-era passenger depot noted for its octagonal waiting room. Built in 1895 by the Pennsylvania Railroad, it served travelers until 1931, when passenger service to Madison was discontinued. $3/person, senior discount, $1/student each site, driver & guide’s admission are complimentary
11:00 A.M. The Schroeder Saddletree Factory is Madison’s one-of-a kind treasure. Owned and operated by the same family for nearly 100 years, this restored factory is the only remaining one of its kind in the country. The Schroeder family produced the wooden framework for saddles at this location from 1878-1972. $4/person, driver & guide’s admission are complimentary
12:00 P.M. I’m sure you’ve worked up an appetite by now. You can eat as a group or strike off on your own and discover where to find Madison’s best burgers, thickest milkshakes, homemade pizzas, and more!
1:00 P.M. Shopping is a must in Madison. We have numerous galleries, displaying the work of local artists. If you love antiquing, we have a great selection of antique and vintage collectible shops. The Comfort Station provides a central location for easy drop off and pick up along with restroom facilities. We also offer a 10% shopping discount card good at participating merchants. Day two
8:00 A.M. Breakfast at your hotel or venture downtown to try a Madison mainstay, Horst’s Donuts. These delicious pastries nearly melt in your mouth, but get there early; they are usually long gone by eleven am.
9:00 A.M. Re-live the movies in Madison with an emphasis on the movie often referred to as the beginning of the “Rat Pack”. Some Came Running featured Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Shirley MacLaine and other notable actors. This big city cast and crew descended on Madison to film this movie in 1958. Learn the inside stories, see where filming took place and find out what the actors were really like. You will also see the girlhood home of Irene Dunne, star of stage and screen, and learn about our most recent brush with Hollywood fame during the filming of Madison, starring Jim Caviezel in 1998. $150/motor coach or $15/person for smaller groups, walking tour also available, prices vary according to length of tour
11:00 A.M. Just steps apart are the Schofield and Sullivan House Museums. Both are fine examples of Federal Style Architecture but each served a completely different purpose. The Sullivan House, built in 1818 and referred to as Madison’s first mansion, was home to Judge Jeremiah Sullivan and his family. The Schofield House functioned as a post office, inn and grocery store and is believed to be the first two-story tavern house in Madison. $3/person, guide is complimentary at Schofield, $4/person, driver and guide’s admission complimentary at Sullivan
12:00 P.M. Lunch, something simple like a soup and sandwich, or if you really have a big appetite try one of our bountiful buffets.
1:30 P.M. Try your hand at painting at Brushstrokes on Vine. This activity is geared to smaller groups and can be a daytime or evening activity. The instructor will walk you through the process step-by-step and VOILA, you will create your very own masterpiece. Sip on a tasty beverage and enjoy light appetizers while waiting for the paint to dry. How fun is this! $35/person, advance payment required, $20/child, ages 6 & up
3:30 P.M. Take this time for some last minute shopping or visit one of our three wineries. Ice cream, yogurt or gelato are also great ways to end your visit.

Get in the Spirit, a Frightfully Good Time (This Tour is Geared to Smaller, Adventurous Groups)
For Our Adventurous Visitors
For those wishing to overnight in Madison, we also offer a Historical Cemetery Tour, a Haunted Historical Pub Crawl, and Haunted Historic River Walk. All tours are conducted in the evening by lantern with a costumed guide.
10:00 A.M. Meet your lively (g)hosts at the Madison Visitors Center, for this ghostly tour of some of Madison’s most spirited spots. This tour loosely follows the encounters retold in the book Ghosts of Madison, published in 2012 by the late Ginger Dyer Jorgensen. This tour can be done as a one hour step-on tour or a 90 minute walking tour. Step-on tour $150/motor coach, walking tour $15/person (minimum 6 people, maximum 30)
12:00 P.M. It seems only fitting that you should dine at Indiana’s oldest hotel, restaurant and tavern; purported to be haunted, The Historic Broadway Hotel and Tavern.
1:30 P.M. Now, for a fright of a different kind; Madison’s newest attraction, The Rockin’ Thunder Jet Boat. This wet and wild ride includes slides, fishtails and heart pounding spins for the thrill seekers in your group. We recommend rain ponchos for those who “fear” getting wet. This option is seasonal and subject to weather and river conditions. $34/person, $29/person with discount coupon
2:00 P.M. Next stop on this frightful journey is the Lanier Mansion. Two friendly apparitions are said to haunt this structure and grounds. Young John James Lanier, the six year old son of JFD Lanier, who met his untimely death by drowning in the river and the mysterious Lady in Red believed to be the ghost of Elizabeth Lanier, who died in the home. $6.00/adult, $5/seniors, $2/children ages 3-12, guide’s admission is complimentary
3:00 P.M. Tour the old county jail. Built in 1849-1850, this dungeon- like fortress was fabricated with native limestone and boasts walls 2 feet thick. It is one of only a few 19th century jailhouse structures still standing. Past offenders incarcerated in the jail often reported they were not alone in their cells…. $2/person
3:30 P.M. Now for some spirits of another kind. Select from either a wine tasting or craft beer tasting. For the teetotalers among you, a coffee and sweet treat may be just the thing to chase away any lingering specters.
4:00 P.M. Gather your wits, make sure your group is intact and get out of town, QUICK!

You may not know this, but Madison has been served by an all-volunteer fire department since 1821, just twelve years after the city was founded. Our city also has the distinction of having the oldest volunteer fire department in Indiana- Fairplay Fire Co. One local firefighter has amassed an impressive collection of firefighting tools and equipment of yesterday and recently opened a museum in the original Walnut Street Fire Co. #4 building. The building itself is a treasure, built in 1874 and lovingly restored (a 2 -1/2 year project) it replicates the architecture of inner city fire halls built in the mid-1800s. It has a cast iron front with tin window crossheads. Other local historic fire stations still in operation are also available for tours. Just north of Madison off Hwy 421 is Madison Vineyards Estate Winery. Have a glass of their award winning wine on the deck, as you enjoy the view of the vineyards and surrounding farmlands. Winemaker dinners are also very popular at this winery and include a multi-course dinner paired with a variety of their wines.
The next stop is Thomas Family Winery. Located in the heart of the historic district, this winery is housed in a renovated 1850s stable and carriage house. The winery, owned and operated by a third generation winemaker, offers a pub-style atmosphere and has a wide variety of old world breads and cheeses to purchase. A new outdoor venue has recently been added to the winery.
The final leg of the Indiana Wine Trail will take you west along Madison’s scenic riverfront. Just one block from the river is Lanthier Winery. Surrounded by charming perennial gardens, this winery, though small, has a mighty selection of wines. They also host numerous events throughout the year and many are free!
Cost: $30/person (includes souvenir wine glass when you complete the trail), deposit or credit card required to hold reservation, balance due one week before day of visit, group leader is complimentary. Minimum groups size 10. Contact [email protected] for reservations www.indianawinetrail.com
