Foreign Exchange Earnings in India from Tourism

The contribution of travel and tourism

to India’s GDP is expected to be at

6.0% (US$ 67.3 billion) in 2009 and

6.9% in 2010.

India – an impressive growth story in Tourism

– Significant growth in tourism between 2002 to 2009

– India witnessed an increase in the Foreign Tourist

Arrivals (FTAs) from 2.38 million to 5.11 million during

this period.

– Foreign Exchange Earnings (FEEs) from tourism rose

from US$ 3460 million in 2002 to US$ 11394 million in

2009.

– Growth in FEE rupee earnings in 2009 at 8.3%

– FTAs in India during the year 2009, however, registered a

fall of 3.3% as tourism sector witnessed a bad year all over

the world.

– This decline in growth rate lower than that observed for

world (4.3%).

– Global tourism sector is now expected to pick up from

2010.

Expected to be the highest generator

of Travel & Tourism Direct Industry

Employment in 2010 with 18.61 million

jobs.

Expected Capital Investment spending

on Travel & Tourism at US$ 34.7 billion

in 2010 – the 10th highest for an

individual country in the world.

16% of the NSDP for the past 5 years.
