Case Paper 1

By now, everyone should know that character is indeed an essential ingredient in ethical

leadership. Those who possess character, mostly those with character will have a place in

history. It is especially important with managers; managers have the power to properly execute

strategy.

Character is important because the sustainability and prosperity of your organization depends

on the integrity of its leaders. I also agree with the Waiter Rule. It is a good rule to take into

perspective when selecting someone to utilize for the success of the organization. The waiter is

one person that is most susceptible to be on the receiving end of the worst behavior one has to

spew. The Waiter Rule gives good insight as to who may be a great leader because a leader is

fair; waiters deserve fair treatment. Humility, integrity, honesty, and respect are major traits

that companies look for to fill leading and authoritative positions.

Although, I do believe that using only the Waiter Rule is too simplistic of a guideline when

selecting one in such an important position as a CEO. There should definitely be more

guidelines, policies, and overall scrutiny that potential CEO’s should go through. This should be

a part of many prerequisites. In all reality, it is not simplistic. It simply answers what could be a

potentially complex question of one’s behavioral characteristic.
