Akio Morita • Made in Japan : Akio Morita and Sony is an autobiography of
Akio Morita, the co-founder and former chairman of Sony Corporation.
• It was written with the assistance of Edwin M. Reingold and Mitsuko Shimomura.
• The book narrates about: The story of Morita Sony Corporation's formation after Japan's brutal defeat in
World War II The Japanese way of thinking particularly their business
management philosophies and styles.
War
• Born to a family of sake brewers which has history of business for 13 generations .
• A broad minded family background brought the western culture closer.
• Blessed with a sharp mind ,science became his favorite subject.
• His family always stood by him.• Worked as an officer in Japanese navy in “The
WORLD WAR 2”
Peace
• Contribution toward rebuilding his country from the ashes of the war.
• His family wanted him to be in his traditional business.• On May 7, 1946, Morita and Ibuka founded Tokyo
Telecommunications Engineering Corporation .• Morita's family invested in Sony during the early period and
was the largest shareholder.• The company developed magnetic recording tape , a pocket-
sized radio and etc.• In 1958, Morita and Ibuka decided to rename their company
Sony.
Selling to the world
• Moritas marketing concept was brand name that would communicate high product quality.
• Marketing is really a form of communication. • Introduction of walkman. • Wanted to project ‘Made in Japan`as benchmark of
quality.• Shifted to USA for Sony company.
On Management
• Put people first not profits.• “Employees are the most important component in
running a business not the shareholders who come and go in the pursuit of profit.” - Akio morita
• Happiness must be created yourself.
American and Japanese styles
• USA has been busy creating lawyers and Japan has busier creating engineers.
• Japanese attitude toward work seem to be critically different from American attitude.
Competition• Japanese are competitive not only in business but
even in life.• Concept of borderless world.
Technology
• Live on volcanic islands with major earthquakes-: Look toward technology as means of survival.
Japan and the world • Japan look at never ending difficulties between two
great nations is often very different.
World Trade• Competitiveness has to be balanced and the
exchange rates acts as the balancing mechanism.
