Admire the sweeping designs of aerodynamically inspired racing cars at the Zagato head-quarters and learn about the history of Italian design at the Triennale Design Museum. Mauro Aprile Zanetti is the chief creative officer at Eva Flair, a fashion start-up platform fostering authentic “Made in Italy” products. Mauro is also an in-dependent filmmaker, writer, and freelance journalist. He has collaborated with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the Internationalization of Italy to direct and produce videos and has also worked with various institutions and indepen-dent productions. He has directed and produced several videos and clips on music, welfare, social, and cultural themes. Mauro is a longtime collaborator with

èITALIA magazine, as special correspondent from New York City, on the Internationalization of Italy as well as with the Italian-American newspaper, America Oggi-ICN Radio, NY. After publishing his book, La Natura Morta de la Dolce Vita - A Mysterious Morandi in the Matrix of Fellini’s Vision, 2008, he has been lecturing on multidisciplinary topics in North American Universities, Institutes for Film & Italian Studies (NYC & SF), and in France, Italy, Israel, and Malta.

Most recently, for the occasion of the 2013 Year of the Italian Culture in the United States, on behalf of the Consulate General of Italy in San Francisco, Mauro created and directed a series of videos called Cultural Ambassadors Circle. Mauro received his bachelor’s degree in foreign languages and literature from John Fitzgerald Kennedy School/Ispica and his master of arts in film/cinema/video studies from the University of Pisa.

June 1 — Milan, Italy Arrive in Milan this morning and take a private coach to your hotel. This evening meet fellow de-sign enthusiasts during a welcome reception and dinner at your five-star hotel, Château de Mon-fort. (R,D)

June 2 — Artemide Lighting Designers, Dolce & Gabbana

Our explorations of Italian design begin at the headquarters of Artemide, world-renowned de-signers of lighting. During an exclusive tour with an Artemide designer, learn about the company’s “Human Light” philosophy, a revolutionary con-cept that views illumination as a way to improve quality of life. Signature Artemide lamps not only cater to peoples’ practical needs but are works of art found in museums in New York, London, and Rome. Next, visit clothing and accessories designers Dolce & Gabbana and view their ex-quisite exhibition space, Metropol, formerly a cin-ema circa 1940s. Sixty-foot arches and a balcony of black glass dramatically accentuate D & G’s fashion shows, which are among some of Milan’s most exquisite. (B)

June 3 — Missoni Designer House, Zagato Headquarters

Founded by Ottavio and Rosita Missoni in 1953, the Missoni label is characterized by its colorful knitwear in a combination of fabrics that incor-porate geometric, floral, and striped patterns. With a Missoni guide, tour the Milan showroom

and learn how designers riff on everything from classic styles to costume wear to create contem-porary eye-turning fashions. From fashion we move to auto design at Zagato, since 1919 cre-ators of some of the world’s most beautiful and stylish racing cars. On a tour of their headquar-ters, discover how founder Ugo Zagato used his background in aeronautics to design light-bod-ied, aerodynamic racing machines. See some of Zagato’s dazzling designs and learn about the birth of such models as Lancia Flaminia Sports and Flavias, the Alpha Romeo Giulia TZ, and the Maserati Spider. (B)

June 4 — Italy’s Lake District, Alessi, B&B Italia

Italy’s Lake District glitters in the shadow of the magnificent Italian Alps, perhaps lending natural inspiration to the region’s designers. At the head-quarters of Alessi, visit the market leaders in in-novative kitchen utensils. Learn how the compa-ny expanded from creating their own designs in the 1930s to enlisting such notables as Philippe Starke and Michael Graves to blend art with func-tionality under the Alessi label. Tour the archives and visit with an Alessi representative for a sneak peek at emerging products. Following lunch on the shores of Lake Orta, head to Como to the home office of B&B Italia, supreme designers of contemporary furniture and home accesso-ries. The building itself was designed by Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano. View their latest cre-ations and discover how their research and de-velopment center collaborates with international designers to create distinctive furnishings. (B,D)

artistic expressions of function. On a guided tour discover how their approach to design and architecture has evolved since the company’s founding in 1934. Stop in the town of Monza to explore Monza Park and the gardens of the Royal Villa. The walled park, commissioned by Napoleon’s stepson, is a serene outdoor space of woodlands and lawn sliced by the Lambro River. The 18th-century Royal Villa, built for Archduke Ferdinand of Austria, has a front row view of Monza Park. Enjoy a wine tasting before returning to Milan. Back in Milan visit the exqui-site Boffi showroom, designed by Piero Lissoni, makes use of a beautifully restored building in Milan’s historic Brera Quarter. (B)

June 6 — Triennale Design Museum, Duomo, La Scala Opera House, Quadrilatero

Milan’s Triennale Design Museum captures the essence of Italian made, with exhibits on archi-tecture, urban design, media arts, music, and more. Your guide discusses the most significant objects of Italian design and the artists who cre-ated them. Here, shoes share space with wine bottles, cars with furniture. Even the museum’s café displays a hundred different designs of chairs, and the spectacular Michele De Lucchi bridge of bamboo, steel, and crystal will leave you breathless, if not dizzy! On an afternoon walking tour explore some of Milan’s architec-tural gems, with stops at the gothic Duomo, the classical Scala Opera House, and the Quadri-latero District, home to boutiques of Italy’s ma-jor fashion houses. June 7 — Milan’s Chiesa Rossa District, Villa Necchi Campiglio

Once home to factory workers, Chiesa Rossa now houses Milan’s burgeoning arts and de-sign district. Stop by Superstudio, a complex

of former warehouses and the brainchild of publisher and art director Flavio Lucchini and photographer Fabrizio Ferri. Together, the men created numerous studios for both seasoned and aspiring fashion photographers, which to-day draw photo artists from around the world. At the gallery Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro, view works of contemporary sculpture by inter-national artists. Enjoy lunch at La Forma. This former warehouse has been turned into an in-ternational center for photography, the first of its kind in Milan, offering a print lab, exhibition space, school, bookshop and good restaurant. Later, head to Villa Necchi Campiglio for an in-sider’s view of the style, design, and life of an upper middle class Lombardy family. Explore the villa, built in the 1930s by Milanese architect Piero Portaluppi, both inside and out. The villa’s architecture beautifully showcases the assort-ment of decorative arts and furnishings, as well as special collections of early 20th-century art and 18th-century paintings and decorative arts. Tonight, celebrate your Italian design tour with a three-course dinner in a local restaurant. (B,L,D)
