ESSEX County Council is recruiting school crossing patrol officers across the county to fill vacancies at established

crossings. The purpose of the job is to help

children, parents and other people across the road at designated times of day, during school term time only.

Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Highways Maintenance and Small Schemes, Cllr Eddie Johnson, said: “These are important vacancies to fill for the community and we encourage members of the community to apply.”

There are vacancies all over the county with three in Chelmsford, two in Colchester and single vacancies at Basildon, Benfleet, Brightlingsea, Buckhurst Hill, Brentwood, Harlow, Maldon, Thorpe-le-Soken, Tolleshunt D’Arcy and Waltham Abbey.

All of the crossings are long standing and have met stringent safety criteria to qualify for a school crossing patrol.

For the last 11 years Gerry Low has

been a crossing patrol officer, the last three on patrol at Spital Road, Maldon, for pupils at All Saints’ C of E Primary School.

At the grand age of 84, Gerry loves getting out of the house in the morning to hit the road with his lollipop.

He said: “One of the best things is getting to know the children and their families.

“A mum told me once that her little boy had said to her: ‘If the lollipop man doesn’t turn up one day does the school have to close?’ That says it all, doesn’t it?

“It’s one of those jobs you get so attached to. I often think to myself at my age I’m not having another winter of that, but one way or the other I turn up. If I didn’t enjoy it I wouldn’t do it, would I?”

Gerry works 8.15am to 9am and 3.15pm to 3.45pm. Essex County Council keeps him comfortable and warm with hats, jackets, gloves, wellies and socks supplied as part of the job.

Stop: Lollipop people needed

Even at 84, Gerry Low still enjoys being a lollipop man

Ruby Ruby Ruby, for Inner Wheel District 24

IT WAS Up, Up and Away for the Essex & East Herts District of Inner Wheel, as it celebrated its 40th year as a District with

a special event held in the Grand Pavilion of Hylands Park House.

The organisation is one of the largest women’s service organisations in the world, with 19,000 members in 29 Districts in Great Britain & Ireland and has given practical help to many people in the region and raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for local, national and international charities.

Over 200 members and guests including the Association’s National President, Thelma

Pacsoo attended the Ruby Celebration which included afternoon tea, musical entertainment and a balloon launch in the grounds.

District 24 which covers Essex and part of East Herts was formed in 1974 and currently has 425 members in 22 Clubs throughout the region.

A display of photographs was also a poignant tribute chronicling the history of the District and its Clubs since its formation.

Speaking at the event, Jean Kay, District Chairman, said: “We are so proud of what the members of District 24 have achieved in the last 40 years.

Wherever help has been needed, be it at clubs for stroke victims, the blind or disabled, hospital shops or entertaining children from the disaster region of Chernobyl, our members could be found. When not providing ‘hands-on’ assistance, they have been busy raising money for a huge range of charities including, this year, filling and sending 305 backpacks to our District’s international charity, Mary’s Meals.

“All our members, past and present, deserve a big ‘thank you’ for their commitment and hard work and now it is their time to celebrate.”

THE Dogs Trust Basildon is gearing up to celebrate its first Fun Day taking place at Barleylands Showground in Billericay on June 21, from 11am-4pm.

The day will include a dog show including 12 different classes covering everything from Gentle Giants to Waggiest Tails and not forgetting Best in Show. Additional activities also include a parade of some of the homeless hounds from Dogs Trust Basildon.

Since the rehoming centre opened last June, the 19th in the charities network, nearly 1,000 dogs have found happy new homes and a handful of dogs making an appearance at the show will be hoping that they too will soon find new families.

Samantha Davies, Dogs Trust Basildon, Supporter Relations Officer said: “We’re so excited that the time has come for our first Fun Day. Since we opened in June last year we’ve been overwhelmed with the support from the local community and hope to see lots of familiar faces on June 21. There will be something for everyone and we

hope that many will see this as a great way to celebrate Father’s Day, what better than have a day out with the family and raise much needed pounds for homeless hounds.”

Entry is £3 per adult, £1 per child. Four-legged friends go free. To find out more about the event visit www.dogstrust.org.uk.

SPORT WEEK

DOGS TRUST

WOMEN across Essex are being encouraged to get involved in

sporting activities as part of Women’s Sport Week.

Taking place until June 7, it is an opportunity for everybody involved with playing, delivering, leading or working in sport to celebrate, raise awareness and increase the profile of women’s sport across the UK.

The initiative is being led by Women in Sport, supported by national governing bodies, county sports partnerships, Sky Sports, the BBC, Sport England and supporters from across the sport sector.

Active Essex, the sport and physical activity partnership for greater Essex, has organised a range of activities for women and girls to ‘get active’ and join in.

Councillor Ray Gooding, Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for Sport and Physical Activity, said: “Women’s Sport Week is a great opportunity to promote how more women can catch the ‘Get Active’ bug and get involved in sporting activities. Active Essex has been successful in encouraging the women of Essex to get active in sport and physical activity and we need to

build on this during this national event.”Through the SHE (Sport Health Education)

project that has been running since 2011 after receiving Sport England National Lottery funding, and managed by Active Essex, women have not only improved their fitness and health but also their sense of well-being and motivation. They have made friends, lost weight, gained confidence and been inspired to try new things. Many of these women, who

would never have had an opportunity like this before, are now trained to run their own women only sport and physical activity sessions in their communities.

Activities taking place include Aerobic Toner − Friday 9.30am, Unitarian Meeting House, SS1 2LL and Zumba, Active Life − Saturdays 9.30am Milton Community Centre, SS1 4HX.

To celebrate Women’s Sports Week, the Active Women’s Festival funded by Active Essex will be taking place this Saturday from 3-5pm, at Southend Leisure and Tennis Centre, Garons Park, Southend. The event encourages women of all ages to come along and try a variety of activities for free while having a laugh with like-minded women. Activities include: Zumba / Fit Steps / Aerobics / Boxercise / Combat / Yoga and Pilates. To find a local activity near you visit getactive.activeessex.org.

One of the first runners to sign up to the event is local man Paul Bridges, 30, from Writtle. service’s manager at the hospice. “This wonderful and essential volunteer team, which is appreciated all year round, adds so much to the work of our organisation through their unselfish giving of time, experience and skills.”

Pearl Harley, 79 a former lab

technician at Havering Sixth Form College, has been volunteering every Monday for the past 16 years and during that time she has helped comfort countless families and relatives.

“I find it very rewarding that I have done something that will hopefully have helped someone that day,” she says.

“As we are going around we can talk to patients and their relatives. Sometimes they really need someone to talk to.”

Pearl who lives in Brentwood, said her role involves getting breakfast trays ready for patients, bringing patients refreshments and ensuring cupboards are stocked.

The grandmother decided to get involved after she lost three sister-in-laws to cancer related illnesses and says the hospice is now a very important part of her life.

“I want to put something back because you never know when you are going to need it as well,” adds

Pearl. “Everyone at the hospice is very caring and it is a lovely environment. Unless you have actually been there you may have a fear of a hospice but it is such a lovely, peaceful place.”

The hospice will be hosting a series of Thank You evenings in June and July to recognise and celebrate all the hard work done by volunteers, many of whom will also be presented with long service awards.

There are a wide range of volunteer opportunities and the hospice is particularly in need of complementary therapists, drivers to transport patients and carers, shops assistants, helpers for the garden and at fundraising events.

To get involved or to find out more, contact the Voluntary Services Department on 01708 758614 or visit the website at www.sfh.org.uk.

CHARLOTTE has exhibited internationally, in Japan, Lahore, Hong

Kong, New York and Singapore. Closer to home her painting ‘The Theatre’ was accepted into the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2012. She also participated in From Morning Till Night, a special event for Katerina Šedá hosted by Tate Modern in 2011, and has since had works shown at Battersea Affordable Art Fair 2013 and Christie’s.

Last year Charlotte also qualified as a Saatchi Gallery Drawing Competition Finalist and featured on the BBC Culture Show in 2013. Made in Essex caught up with this exceptionally talented artist to find out more about her work.

How did your love of drawing and painting come about? What are your first memories?

One of my earliest memories in art is doing a course when I was really young. I was in a room with lots of old people and I was the youngest by far. It was held in a local church, and we had to copy an image

from photographs or postcards. Everyone drew them quite realistically but I took the image and I made it really fantastical with multi-coloured pictures. I changed the ducks, I changed the colour of the roof, I changed the colour of the trees… and when we laid them out everyone’s was very similar to the postcard and mine was absolutely crazy.Who are your artistic inspirations - both past and present?

Past - It would have to be Lawrence Alma-Tadema, his work is exquisite. I would want him to be my teacher and mentor. Present - Anselm Kiefer, I saw his show at the Royal

Academy and it left such a strong memory in my mind. What is the best work you’ve created so far?

My work changes all the time, that’s the only way I believe you learn through experimenting, trying all different ideas until one works out. I have learnt through my mistakes.

My current theme is the ‘ladies’ which range from classic fashion sketches, to ice cream ladies, afternoon tea ladies, sushi ladies and beyond. Commercially these have really taken off and are selling really well.

I’m also pushing them into making a brand, it’s all to come.

What is the most interesting exhibition you have taken part in?Last summer I drew the Chicago skyline in a live painting session for Paint Jam London. We set up our four-metre canvases outside Kings Cross station and everyone and anyone could come and paint on the painting. It was such a busy event and went down really well. It was nice to see people who had never painted before get involved. Do you get inspired wandering around galleries - if so what are your favourites in the UK/worldwide?Yes I do, London is such an amazing city for art. It’s filled with so much to do and see. The V&A in a fantastic museum, it’s free and filled with such beautiful things. My favourite is Sir John Soane’s Museum. I recommend that you go. It’s a small museum and they do a night tour where they light the house with candles. It’s beautiful.

What’s been your best and worst career moment?

My best career moment was receiving my letter saying I had got in to the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, I cried. Also it was last year when I quit my part time jobs and went full time as an artist. You have to take risks in life. I don’t have a worst... I have learnt from mistakes, but they are important to make, when you make a mistake it shifts your way of seeing and thinking, which I feel is important. You are never too young or old to stop growing as a person and learning. Mistakes can only make you stronger. What are your five top tips for aspiring artists? 1) Keep working on your style and don’t give up. Follow what feels true to yourself by using your gut instinct when creating. 2) Take up a part time course in art. There are so many courses out there which are cheap and easy to do. You need one evening or morning of your week to commit to being creative. When creating you use a different part of your brain, it can be so relaxing yet challenging. 3) Take risks, if you don’t ask

you don’t get. Keep making and creating and get your work out there. Social media is so important in today’s day and age. Push your work on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest.4) Use what’s around you, all the top artists have throughout history. Start with drawing your newest item of clothing or a plant. And experiment with different materials. 5) Visit galleries. Go onto Time Out online and check out what’s on. Go and see paintings and sculpture. It’s so inspiring. Take a notepad and make notes on all the things you liked and didn’t like. 6) Spend all the time you can working on your art. Truly believe in yourself and stick to what’s true to you. Don’t take other people’s advice. You know in your heart of hearts what is good and hopefully a market out there for your type of work.

Ensure your wedding day is one to remember. Hylands House, in Chelmsford, Essex, is a stunning Grade II listed property, restored to its former glory, and the perfect venue where to tie the knot.

Wedding Bells at a beautiful location

From a country mansion to a marvellous marquee for your big day

High-end decorative marquees and the largest range of themed interiors in the UK perfect for weddings, events and festivals are provided by House of Hud.

THE company founded by Katherine Hudson has remained a UK market leader almost since its inception and is renowned

for its stunning range of interiors and has won ‘Best Marquee Provider in London and the South East’ in The Wedding Industry Awards twice since the awards began, and Katherine has picked up regional business awards for ‘Businesswoman of the Year’ and ‘Employer of the Year’.

Over the years they have attracted loyal customers who enjoy the personal and efficient service, appreciate the

recommendations given on every element of their event and attention

to detail in the furnishings and linings.

Unusually for a marque company, almost half the crew that arrive to set up the tents are female which helps to maintain the high standards for the interiors and is often commented on by clients - especially

Brides – who find the presence of female crew reassuring that

their needs will be understood and puts them at ease at a time

that can often be stressful during the build-up to their wedding.

The company now has nine unique interiors designed around different themes from interiors inspired by English heritage in the William Morris interior to those inspired by some of the world’s most exotic and colourful cultures such as the Bollywood-inspired Bombay Boudoir - each tent or interior has a distinctive personality and offers clients something unique.

They have also added some stunning Moghul styled canvas tents – their Pearl and Oyster Pearl marquees – and a dressing and theming team that transforms indoor spaces with décor, draping and lighting as well as standard marquees and recently the services have expanded to offer glamping options.

Page 13: Made In Essex - Issue #33

Katherine believes passionately that your environment strongly affects your mood. “Beauty is a form of genius – it needs no explanation” as Oscar Wilde so succinctly put it, and has the ability to inspire those that view it.

“Here at House of Hud we know a thing or two about weddings, having organised a good few of them every year, and what with talking to brides and grooms year-round about their ideas, inspirations and dreams and then helping to turn them into reality we get quite a good idea of what is hot and what is not!

Combine that with observations made by our Industry friends’ and we’ve compiled the Top 5 Trends you’ll be noticing at weddings in 2015….enjoy!”

1. Quintessentially EnglishThe tinkle of vintage porcelain teacups; a splash of Hendricks and cucumber, a gentle Summer’s breeze, the comforting distant knell of cricket bat against ball… and your great-Aunt Nora doing her best ‘disdainful Dowager Duchess’ on the lawn.

Ahh. This is England. The trend for old-English everything has

leapt further back in time to Victoriana and beyond for 2015, as bright young things everywhere are channelling Downton Abbey, Oscar Wilde and Austen.

Think Victorian lace detailing, wild-flower garland table-runners, William Morris prints, elaborate topiary and lashings of strawberries and cream.

2. Hip to SipTaking a cue from experimental pop-ups and late night speakeasies, 2015 is the year to treat your guests to something a little bit original; as couples throw out the staid, tried-and tested menus and opt for exciting, contemporary tastes.

Add an element of surprise with artisan food-trucks and pop-up tasting stations of DIY Ceviche, pulled-pork, lobster rolls or

Oyster shucking and don your mixologist cap to experiment with and personalise the brew of your favourite cocktails; served with prohibition panache in miss-matched miniature jars or Gatsby champagne glasses.

3. DIY BohemiaIt’s OUT with the Bourgeois and IN with Bohemia as weddings become less ostentatious conformity and more you and your loved ones pulling together to make it all happen.

Invitations drawn by the flower girls, wildflower centrepieces picked by your mother-in-law, funny anecdotes from friends and family printed on napkins… Get crafty and add quirky elements of humour to let your personalities shape the day.

More a huge dinner party for everyone you know and love, than a fanfare of fuss and formality; create a personal and intimate atmosphere by sitting together on long rustic tables, passing shared plates and lighting it all perfectly with homely, twinkling lights. Informal and unconventional weddings will be BIG in 2015. You heard it here first.

4. Go GREENThe Royal wedding inspired us to bring the outdoors in, and we have it on good authority that the trend for green has definitely stuck.

Herbs such as rosemary and mint strung together with ivy, magnolia leaf and fern are

adorning table-runners; framing cocktail menus, redefining tent ceilings and softening chandeliers. Topiary and architectural trees bring form and height into tents and venues as well as adding life into the spaces. The key here is to adorn with foliage and hint at the great outdoors, rather than sending your guests into the jungle to forage for their supper.

5. Industrial ChicTextured, mature and modern. . .Transforming an industrial space in to a sleek venue with personalised touches and casual but polished details will be a hit in 2015 with any bride looking for a big city wedding.

Soften exposed brickwork with candle-light, roses and peonies; add a splash of colour with bespoke lighting; punctuate with art and define the space with clever draping.

With an ever-increasing number of industrial inner-city spaces opening up for private hire, it’s easier than ever to find a venue that’s fit for transformation.

better place than Hylands House, Essex. The childhood sweethearts celebrated their nuptials here in July 2014.

The Chelmsford couple met twenty years ago, when they were just 13 and 14, whilst cycling in their local park and have always admired Hylands House and its surroundings. “We only viewed other venues online, as we had pretty much set our sights on Hylands from day one”, said Samantha,

“and we often take walks around its pretty grounds with our children”.

The use of the grand house and its sweeping drive and gardens turned out to be an excellent choice,

particularly as Ryan and Samantha’s wedding took place on the hottest day of the year. The house with its large windows and patio and its adjacent vast parkland, ensured that all guests could take advantage of the weather.

At the start of the day, Samantha and her bridal party were given the new, exquisitely light and stylish Bridal Suite to get dressed in and ensure that hair and makeup were picture-perfect for the day. Meanwhile, Ryan settled into the Repton room, with his groom’s party and a couple of nerve-calming cold beers, whilst they changed for the big day. “The fact that we had these rooms too just helped add to the specialness of the occasion”, said Samantha.

With 61 people attending in the day and a further 50 in the evening, the couple also made use of the rest of the large house, so that they could properly share this beautiful venue with family and friends. The Ceremony took place in the dual aspect Drawing Room, which overlooks beautiful parkland towards a lake. Following this, the wedding breakfast was in the lavishly decorated Banqueting Room, which has 24 carat gold leaf

swag and scroll decorations, and silk lined walls.

The Dining Room and outside Patio were used for the reception drinks and the evening buffet was held in the Terrace Room. Last but certainly not least, the stunning and impressive Entrance Hall, with its chequered marble floor flooded with natural light in the day, was also commandeered as their evening dance venue.

The couple decorated Hylands to make more of their chosen

colour scheme. “For the wedding breakfast,

the seats and tables were covered in white linen, with

brown sashes on the chairs. We had tall standing martini

glass centre pieces placed on round mirrors with scattered crystals for extra sparkle”, continued Samantha.

“We put a great deal of thought into our colour scheme”, added Samantha. Ryan and his Groom’s party wore chocolate brown suits, with white shirts and brown shoes. Samantha’s enchanting traditional dress was in ivory with a lovely long train and veil. The bridesmaids toned in beautifully, wearing rum pink strapless evening-style dresses.

Tamsin and Tom from Hylands House wedding team helped with the initial preparation for the day, “All of the staff, from the day we booked the venue to end of our wedding day were brilliant”, said Ryan, “and were always happy to assist where needed.”

Samantha adds, “Hylands House is timeless and offers such an amazing, fairytale feel for your wedding day and is the perfect setting for some truly memorable pictures. We would highly recommend it to anyone.”

PERHAPS the coolest salon in town, with its bold, bright retro feel and eclectic mix of photos and nic nacs, owner

Matt Bolton ensures haircuts are tailored to the client and are not just cuts that could be churned out by anyone. His enthusiasm about his job and pretty much anything else he talks to you about just adds to the experience and is the main reason his salon will only ever be a success.

Matt is an expert in all aspects of hairdressing with a career spanning more than twenty years having worked in salons and styling editorial work for magazines such as American Cosmopolitan, Elle, GQ & Vogue.

“I have worked on major advertising campaigns for companies such as Diesel, Dove, Levi’s & Marks & Spencer,” says Matt, who has also worked on the fashion catwalks of New York, London and Milan, on fashion shows for designers such as Antonio Berardi, Jaeger, John Rocha, Matthew Williamson & Nicole Farhi to name but a few.”

During these experiences Matt’s had the pleasure of styling celebrities and supermodels such as: Elizabeth Jagger, Erin O’Connor, Giselle Bundchen, Helena Christensen, Jerry Hall, Johnathen Rhys-Meyers and Leah Wood.

His salon background consists of mainly working in several Toni & Guy salons across the country including Canary Wharf, Kensington and Knightsbridge and many of his clients from London have followed him to Shenfield.

With testimonials like the following Matt’s certainly doing something right!

Janet - Shenfield:“It’s the best cut I’ve ever had and I am very keen to maintain it.”

David Johnson - Clayhall:“Current. Classy. Fashionable. Trustworthy. Humorous. Engaging.”

Graeme - Chiselhurst:“Matt has cut my hair for the last 10 years, his talent is, in my opinion, a rare thing in hairdressing. He gives you expert

advice on your hair, but ultimately cuts it exactly the way you want it, not how he thinks it should be.”

Neil - Shenfieldfoureighty™ just blew me away. It is easily the coolest salon I’ve ever seen. It is bespoke, unique, inspiring and undefeatably cool - just like Matt!

A few vital questions Made in Essex wanted answered! So what is so different about foureighty™?

“I’ve tried to create a salon different to others and used my in-depth knowledge of what makes a salon really great interpreting that in my own unique way at foureighty™,” he explains. “We are here to bring the personal touch

back into hairdressing. Our intimate friendly atmosphere will leave you feeling really cared for, rather than shunted along in the all too familiar ‘conveyor belt mentality’ of the modern hairdressing chains who I know from personal experience focus only on profit rather than people. We pride ourselves in providing a bespoke service which tailors each individual haircut based on your personality, lifestyle, face shape, hair texture and skin tone.”

What is the most popular look of the moment?

“After Cheryl Fernandez Versini changed her hair to a Bob we have seen a resounding rise in The Bob’s popularity. This exceptionally classic cut is definitely hot right now, with varying degrees of length, including the graduated bob makes this style accessible to everyone (whatever their hair texture) and is exceptionally popular at the moment. A more sharper Bob with really blunt ends and a definite wilder texture is without a dounbt more popular with those willing to be bolder with their selections.

“We are also seeing a general

change in texture, moving away from the sleek styles to a more textured, messy feel. I think this will be very popular over the coming summer months, along with highlighted hair blended with natural base tones to create a more “naturalised” look. What makes a really great haircut? “I believe that what makes a really great haircut are a few different factors that work together to achieve a really great final result.

Firstly every aspect of your life needs to be considered, what you are like as a person (personality), what you do on a day to day basis (functionality), then

your hair texture, face shape and skin tone all need to be taken into consideration when delivering a haircut and colour that not only fits with your life but is functional and looks great!

“In my opinion the real test of a decent haircut is how it looks four or even six weeks after visiting the salon. Strong shape, colour and the correct products will certainly make all the difference. If your hair is still looking and feeling great after this time, then you know you’ve cracked

Natasha has always relished the opportunity to dress up in full costume and get involved in London’s famous Notting Hill Carnival. Now as a slim lady she can wear her flamboyant costumes with even more pride. “I was always a confident person but now I feel great about the way I look as well – I actually enjoy getting ready and I love shopping. It’s great to be able to go into any shop and find clothes that I

can wear, long gone are the days of shopping in plus size shops! I can move around without getting out of breath

and most importantly I am healthy for my son. I have more energy for him and taking part in activities

such as performing at Notting Hill Carnival!”

Natasha attended counselling sessions with Tracy at the LighterLife Centre in Braintree. To enquire or book a (free) consultation call 0800 2 988 988 or visit lighterlife.com.

their life, clients can choose from a range of plans. LighterLife Total (for those with three or more stone to lose) combines a nutritionally complete Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD) for effective weight loss and a unique behaviour-change programme, for long-term weight maintenance by helping people deal with their emotional attitude towards food. If you have less weight to lose, the LighterLife Lite plan consists of three Foodpacks a day, together with one healthy meal of conventional food.Plans include either three or four daily nutritious food options from their exclusive range of high-quality Foodpacks and meal

alternatives. Clients receive all the advice and support they need around their food options leaving them free to focus on achieving their goals. They get plenty of opportunity to focus on goals in weekly group meetings that help them understand the sort of eating and foods that got them into trouble in the first place so that they can break the yo-yo cycle.LighterLife provides a range of nutritious and tasty Foodpacks

so clients don’t have to think about cooking, or calories or protein and fibre content – the only job they have to do is choose which yummy meals, soups, shakes, porridge and bars to eat first. Foodpacks contain exactly the same stuff as conventional food. On four packs a day, you get 100% of your recommended daily allowance (RDA) for vitamins and minerals, (probably more than before). Plus they are packed with protein and fibre.Since its humble beginnings, the company has grown to

a large network of trained LighterLife Counsellors across the UK and Ireland. Working with a range of highly qualified scientists and nutritionists,

LighterLife is committed to complying with the recommendations of NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) and adhering to national and international standards, guidelines and best

practice for weight management, wellness and emotional health.

GOING through pictures of herself as a size 22, Natasha felt compelled to

lose weight in order to feel confident and beautiful on her big day. A year and a half on, Natasha is over seven stone lighter and is now a healthier, happier person.

The NHS marketing and communications manager from Essex, explains how she had always been big, even as a child – “I was quite chubby at school although I definitely wouldn’t have said I was fat as I was sporty. However, I managed to get quite a few injuries which obviously made it harder to play sport and exercise – contributing to my weight gain. Having my son also saw my weight increase from a size 16-18 to a size 22. This is when I turned to LighterLife.”

Natasha has lost an incredible 7st 5lbs. LighterLife combines a nutritionally complete Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD) for fast, effective weight loss and a unique behaviour-change programme, to

offer a realistic opportunity and long-term weight maintenance by helping people deal with their emotional attitude towards food.

Natasha cites the support of her counsellor as instrumental in aiding her weight loss – “LighterLife looks at your relationship with food and not just what you eat. The help of Tracy and my group was absolutely invaluable and I couldn’t have done it without them. People should never be embarrassed to say that they are trying to lose weight. They are making a positive change in their life and therefore I would encourage people to have the confidence to stand up and change their life.”

Without the excess weight Natasha is a more active person again – “When I was heavier I didn’t have much

energy, I never used to walk anywhere but now I walk everywhere I can and I’ve even started running. The weight loss has also caused some surprising changes to my body! Weirdly my shoe size went down by a size and a half. I had fractured my Achilles tendon in 2008 and hadn’t been able to walk in heels since but now I can wear them just fine without any pain at all.”

PLANTING scent in the garden in also an excellent way of improving your sense of well-being and making

your outside space feel even more special. One of the most popular and established plants that gives off a glorious aroma is the rose, a constant and important scent throughout history that is calming and can help ease stress.

Roses are a great addition to any garden environment, large or small, contemporary or traditional with varieties for planting in flower beds, borders and planters. The Blue Peter gardener, Chris Collins (pictured), thinks no garden is complete without a rose or two. “The English garden is incomplete without one or possible many roses and they just give and give with the minimum of fuss”.

There is a rose for every garden situation from Hybrid Teas to miniatures, climbers to floribundas. Roses can be used for all aspects of the garden and can be grown in containers. They are easy to look after but should be watered on a

regular basis particularly if in pots. Gardening myth of the month

is that watering if full sun causes scorching on leaves. There are many good reasons to avoid watering plants in the sun but sunburn is not one of them. The diffused rays of the sun are not powerful enough to cause burning. In general, the best time to water most garden plants is early in the morning when it won’t evaporate that quickly and can also potentially reduce the risk of leaf diseases that often occur in overly moist situations. The evening is also a

good time. However, watering midday will not harm your plants.

When it comes to watering lawns Mother Nature usually provides enough water through rainfall for grass to grow strong. However, there are times when rainfall needs to be supplemented, such as with newly planted lawns or extended periods of heat and drought. With watering comes mowing so here are a couple of do’s and don’ts - mow once a week in the summer, don’t mow when grass is wet or during a drought and raise the mower blades when mowing in very hot weather.

Gardening JuneMid-Summer gardensBeing in the garden is great at this time of year – the days are longer and warmer and you can really enjoy your outside living space as somewhere to relax and unwind. Research shows that being in the garden for just a few minutes can be good for your health, be it your physical wellbeing or your mental one.

Lawn care aside, it’s a busy time in the garden with many tasks to occupy any gardener and Mid Summer’s Day to give you the maximum daylight hours – so here’s a list of the top jobs for this month from the Royal Horticultural Society and National Garden Gift Vouchers

1. Hoe borders regularly to keep down weeds

2. Be water-wise, especially in drought-affected areas

3. Pinch out sideshoots on tomatoes

4. Harvest lettuce, radish, other salads and early potatoes

5. Position summer hanging baskets and containers outside

6. Cut lawns at least once a week

7. Plant out summer bedding

8. Stake tall or floppy plants

9. Prune many spring-flowering shrubs

10. Shade greenhouses to keep them cool and prevent scorch

Keith Ashton - Property Of The WeekBRENTWOOD £649,995Nestled discreetly off the Ingrave Road and enjoying views over the woods of Shenfield Common, lays this detached three/four bedroom property, surrounded by mature and well-tended gardens. Available for the first time in many years, the property offers a distinct inviting feel and would make a fantastic home for its next purchasers.

ith average fi rst-time buyer deposits soaring to over 30% of the property value,

affordable house purchase schemes have rocketed in popularity. For example Help to Buy has helped over 88,000 buyers, and over 40,000 people have taken advantage of alternative housing solutions, such as shared ownership.

The G15, a collaboration of London’s largest housing associations, including Genesis, collectively manages over 410,000 affordable homes and build 10,000 more annually, illustrating how popular these options are becoming. Shared ownership in particular has both short-term and long-term benefi ts for those who want to get on the property ladder but are struggling to raise a deposit or secure a traditional mortgage.

How does shared ownership work?

Providing you meet the criteria (see P32), shared ownership schemes are a great way to get onto the property ladder and you may fi nd you can buy a bigger home than you would otherwise have been able to afford, especially with the opportunity of staircasing.

When you fi rst buy a new home through shared ownership, you purchase a share of the property, typically between 25-75%, paying rent

on the remaining share to the housing association, who then in effect become your landlord. As and when you’re able to afford it, you can take steps to buy additional shares until you own 100% of your home. This is known as staircasing.

Do all housing associations offer staircasing?

Most housing associations will allow their tenants to staircase up to three times, until you reach100% ownership. As well as owning more of your home, staircasing also means the amount of rent you pay decreases, so it can help free up more of your disposable income. As the rent is affordable from the start, it should make it easier to save money towards further staircasing.

Will staircasing cost me?

Purchasing further shares works much like a typical house purchase, with valuations required for each ‘step’, and you will of course need to pay the legal fees, and any mortgage fees, if applicable, too. On the plus side, you’ll not need to pay any Stamp Duty on staircasing up to 80% ownership if the value is less than £125,000.

How you fund the purchase of additional shares is up to you, although typically this is done through a mortgage lender – most building societies and high street banks offer

these types of mortgages. Some providers will allow you to borrow up to 95%, meaning you only need a 5% deposit to secure the next slice of ownership. Speak to an independent mortgage advisor to fi nd out what options you have.

As an outright owner, although you no longer need to pay any rent on the property, it is worth noting as leaseholder of an apartment, you’re still required to pay management charges, such as ground rent, as the housing association will remain the freeholders of the land. If you’ve bought a house, the freehold can be transferred to you upon reaching 100% ownership.

What would I need to do when I come to sell my shared ownership home? When you want to sell the property, you can sell the share you own through your housing association, or if you’ve staircased up to 100%, you can sell it in on the open market, through an estate agent of your choice. When you sell your home, the greater percentage you own, the more profi t you will make if the value of your home has increased, so there’s a benefi t to staircasing in getting more equity back when you sell up.

LOCAL LETTING AGENCY STANDS UP FOR STANDARDSNALS, the National Approved Letting Scheme, aims to

rid the private letting industry of cowboys Property management agent Belvoir Basildon, Southend and Romford, is the latest company to join the

NALS nationwide letting scheme - set up to provide a much-needed scheme to enable landlords and tenants to avoid the pitfalls of dealing with ‘cowboy’ letting agents. Belvoir with immediate effect is now

fully licensed operator under the NALS scheme and will bear the NALS logo. NALS (The National Approved Letting Scheme) ensures that agents comply with defined service

standards and has in place a customer complaints procedure offering independent redress through an ombudsman scheme, Professional Indemnity Insurance, Client Money Protection cover and access to

Tenancy Deposit Protection.

The scheme is supported by some of the most powerful voices in the property industry and the scheme is open to any firm operating in the lettings sector who meets NALS’ strict criteria.

NALS Chief Executive Isobel Thomson comments: “NALS service standards are the consumer’s

benchmark against which to judge the performance of letting and management agents operating in the private rented sector and we are delighted to welcome Belvoir Basildon into the scheme.

“Agents such as Belvoir are in the vanguard of a drive to establish uniform service standards in the industry. Those agents who are not prepared to meet the standards required by NALS and, most

importantly, the public, will not survive for long.”Keeley Taylor, Director at Belvoir Basildon, Romford and Southend adds: “We see being a NALS licensed firm as an excellent opportunity to increase business within our letting and management department.

This visible assurance provided by the NALS logo gives prospective landlords and tenants the confidence of knowing the service they can expect from dealing with us.”

With 16 years of lettings industry experience, and five years working for Belvoir, 30-year old Keeley

Taylor was the perfect candidate to take over as franchisee of the Belvoir Lettings Franchise in Basildon. She is now director of Belvoir Basildon which covers the territories of Basildon, Romford and Southend-on-Sea.

Her loyalty to the Belvoir brand and love for all things lettings meant that she elected to take over the business when the franchise became available.

“It really felt like the right step for me when I was offered the chance to become the Franchisee,” she explains, “having worked at the office in Basildon since 2006 (primarily when it was known as ‘Let it Be and then as part of Belvoir when it was bought out by them in 2010). The company initially started nine years ago and it was just the director and me at that time. We had no properties and strived to create and grow a client-base. Since then the business has grown tremendously.”

Keeley’s contacts have held her in good stead. “I’ve worked at the office for so long so I have some great relationships with the existing

landlords and tenants and it’s fabulous to be able to build the business and guide it in a new direction.”

Keeley is just one of many new franchise owners for Belvoir who have been a successful lettings agency with an award winning service for nearly two decades.

Offices across the UK such as the one Keeley runs in Basildon, are individually owned by local people, which the company believe ensures the best combination of knowledge and marketing effectiveness, such as the franchisee’s familiarity with the local schools and facilities; knowing the better areas to live in and why some houses are more attractive to locals whilst others will attract newcomers to an area.

“I always felt strongly supported by the staff and the management at Belvoir’s Central Office and have good relationships with them, so the decision to become a franchisee once the possibility arose was an easy one,” Keeley says. “I couldn’t wait to be part of a network. I would recommend anyone looking into a Lettings Franchisee role to contact Belvoir’s head office in Grantham, they’ve been fantastic.”

Keeley adds: “I am very enthusiastc about growing Belvoir Basildon and its future.”

Moving house needn’t be a nightmare - just make your move with Belvoir. Made in Essex speak to Belvoir Basildon’s new Franchisee and director Keeley Taylor

FREEHOLD LAND WITH TELEPHONE MAST INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITYAn unusual investment opportunity – land housing a telephone mast - is coming under the auctioneer’s hammer with a freehold guide price of £30,000 plus.

The land in Crondon Park Lane is among nine Essex and North and East London lots listed for sale by the regional land and property auctioneers Clive Emson next month (June).

Adjacent to Greenwoods Farm in Crondon Park Lane (off the B1007), Stock, Ingatestone, the land is currently let at a rental of £4,300 per annum on a 25-year term from 30 March 2015.

“This is one of the more unusual lots we have been instructed to

auction so far. It will appeal to those who can see the value in a return from the ground rent and from capital growth or for a development scheme in the longer term, subject to the necessary consents being gained.”

TWO-BEDROOM FLAT IS GREAT INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITYA two-bedroom, ground floor flat in Billericay is going up for auction with a leasehold guide price of £220,000 plus.

The property in Hawkley Court, Chapel Street is among nine Essex and North and East London lots listed for sale by the regional land and property auctioneers Clive Emson next month (June).

A purpose-built large apartment, it is seen as a great investment purchase as other properties in the communal block are letting for around £1,000 a month.

Paul Bridgeman, auctioneer and president of the National Association of Auctioneers and Valuers, said: “This is our third auction for Essex and word is spreading. Our number of lots for sale has doubled from the previous month and we anticipate keen interest from investors looking for value.

“This apartment is offers great potential as an investment property with the potential for a good yield.”

The flat is within half-a-mile of the station and just a stone’s throw from Waitrose and the town centre.

It has double glazing, security entry phone system, gas heating and communal gardens.

There is a built-in storage area in the entrance hall, two double bedrooms with fitted wardrobes, a kitchen/diner and a living room with a bay window offering far-reaching views to the rear.

The property is being auctioned with the remainder of a 99-year lease from 25 March 1974.

Paul added: “The election result has definitely given the county’s property market a boost and we have registered a great deal of interest in the lots we are putting forward.

“We have an even greater selection this time with some very interesting lots, including vacant houses and flats, both commercial and residential investments – and a telephone mast investment for good measure.”

“With interest rates staying low

and demand increasing without the threat of unjustifiable and divisive ‘rent controls’, there will not be a better time to buy in the foreseeable future.”

Last month’s most intriguing sale was that of a former Cold War nuclear bunker on the Roding Valley Nature Reserve, Chigwell, which went for £20,000 to nearby resident and father-of-four Raymond Sturgess.

He plans to turn it into a place where his children can study in peace and he will also hold parties in the 13ft by 9ft underground space.

Clive Emson’s presence and reputation in Essex and North and East London is growing fast and Paul, who along with senior auction valuer Martin Hardy have nearly 40 years of professional experience between them, is confident lot numbers will continue to increase over the coming months.

Paul added: “We are certainly being called on to appraise more property as time goes by. This is, in part, due to our growing network of supporting local agents across Essex and North and East London.”

One of the four largest land and property auction companies in the UK, Clive Emson’s auctioneers are regulars on BBC One’s long-running Homes Under the Hammer series, presented by Lucy Alexander, Martin Roberts and former Premiership footballer Dion Dublin.

The independent company holds eight rounds of auctions at five locations from Essex to Cornwall on consecutive days every six weeks.

Starting at 11am, the third of Clive Emson’s regional Essex and North & East London auctions in 2015 takes place at the Channels Golf Club, Little Waltham, Chelmsford, on Monday, June 15.

PUT A STAMP ON POST OFFICE INVESTMENTA shop, three-bedroom maisonette and semi-detached garage in Billericay are up for auction with a freehold guide price of up to £330,000.

The property in the popular Grange Road parade of shops is among nine Essex and North and East London lots listed for sale by the regional land and property auctioneers Clive Emson next month (June).

Currently run as a Post Office and convenience store, the shop is let at a total rent of £23,260 per annum.

LOT 9

SEASIDE LIVING AT AN ATTRACTIVE PRICEA first floor flat in a popular residential location in Leigh-on-Sea is expected to prove an attractive proposition when it comes up for auction at a leasehold guide price of £100,000 plus.

The property in Woodfield Park Drive Road is among nine Essex and North and East London lots listed for sale by the regional land and property auctioneers Clive Emson next month (June).

It is situated on the north side of Leigh Road, just half-a-mile from

Chalkwell mainline railway station to Fenchurch Street, London, and the shops, bars and restaurants on Leigh Broadway.

Paul Bridgeman said: “Although this flat is in need of modernisation, it is in the popular waterside location of Leigh-on-Sea and at a guide price of £100,000 plus it will no doubt be attractive.”

The flat, being sold leasehold on a new 125-year lease has a ground floor communal entrance with stairs to a living room with bay window, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom, with separate toilet.

ew data has revealed that the number of people in England who own their homes outright is now higher than the number

of people buying with mortgages for the first time since the 1980s.

The English Housing Survey has revealed that the balance of ownership in England has tipped in recent years and there are now more owners than mortgage holders. While 7.4 million households in England are outright owners, the figure for mortgaged-owners is 6.9 million.

YOUNG PEOPLE MORE LIKELY TO RENTHousing groups have warned of a ‘priced-out generation’ as the figures revealed a widening age divide. The majority of outright owners, 4.5 million households, have a resident aged 65 or over while the proportion of 25- to 34-year-olds who are owner-occupiers has dropped from 59% to 36% over the past 10 years.

Younger people are now increasingly likely to be found in private rented accommodation with just under half of 16- to 34-year-olds now renting from private landlords. The number of people renting has also increased in recent years, with the latest figures showing that 19% of households rent privately and 17% live in rented social housing.

Neal Hudson from property consultancy Savills said the change in tenures was probably “a combination of both market and demographic factors, with fewer first-time buyers entering the market and more baby-boomers approaching retirement and paying off their mortgage, helped by low mortgage rates”.

He added: “The recent pick-up in first time buyer numbers will perhaps slightly slow the trend but will not be sufficient to reverse it. While house prices remain high relative to incomes and housing delivery remains below

required levels, we will continue to see the private rented sector expand.”

WINDING BACK THE CLOCKThe National Housing Federation said the figures showed how the younger ‘priced-out’ generation had been hit by the rising market. Chief executive David Orr said: “As house prices continue to rise we’re in danger of winding back the clock on homeownership, with only the privileged few having any hope of affording it. “At the moment people who can’t buy a home have little or no choice but to rent privately, going from one short-term let to another at an ever-escalating cost. We believe that everyone should have a home they can afford, which means having more affordable homes to rent or buy through shared ownership and a private rental market that’s fit for purpose.”

N

Homeowners outnumber mortgage holders for first time since the 1980sThe generational divide is also widening, with the majority of homeowners now 65 or over, says Nick Parkhouse

N

Homeowners outnumber mortgage holders for first time since the 1980sThe generational divide is also widening, with the majority of homeowners now 65 or over, says Nick Parkhouse

f you’re thinking of taking out a new mortgage, one of the biggest challenges facing you is to accurately compare the cost of one deal with another. While

mortgage rates are easy enough to compare, associated costs and fees can be confusing with many lenders giving these charges different names.

However, things could be set to change. The Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) has claimed that progress has been made in standardising fees and that new rules about fee descriptions could be in force by the end of 2015.

LENDERS TRYING TO IMPROVE TRANSPARENCY OF MORTGAGE FEESA three-page report from the CML and consumer group Which? has suggested to the Chancellor that lenders are in the process of trying to improve the transparency of mortgage fees.

In a letter accompanying the report, the CML told the Chancellor: “We have been working closely together over the last few months to identify what opportunities there are to help customers when they are trying to compare mortgages. A summary of this work and our resultant proposals accompanies this letter.”

The final report is expected later this year, following on from a 2014 briefing from Which? that called for action from lenders to make the

comparison of mortgage prices more straightforward and to make the full cost of a mortgage clearer.

The letter added: “Our hope is that our proposals will both allow customers to have a better understanding of what is available in the mortgage market and ensure they will be able to make a more informed choice of what option they want to pursue.”

The Building Societies Association and the Association of Mortgage

Intermediaries are also to be kept informed of developments, and the findings will be discussed with price comparison websites.

The key proposals are:

• More consistent use of terms to describe the same type of fees and charges in order that consumers can accurately compare them

• To provide clearer ways of presenting information in order to help borrowers

compare the cost of particular mortgage deals over specific periods, not just the upfront costs

• A common approach from banks and building societies to make their tariff of fees more easily available and to provide clearer information about mortgage costs

• Introduce a better explanation of whether fees are compulsory or avoidable and when they will be charged

Commenting on the new proposals, Keith Osborne, editor of WhatHouse?, says: “We welcome this ongoing debate as it is important that consumers are able to accurately compare mortgage deals. By standardising terms and making it clearer what fees are payable it will be easier for borrowers to find the cheapest overall product.”

We feel pride when our employees of the month are given a fabulous weekend in Monte Carlo. When we feel like part of an amazing success story at the monthly company meeting. When we double in size in the space of a year. When we set ourselves a target of raising over £10K for charity in a year… and then smash that target.

We are proud to say we are Athona Recruitment. We are passionate, trustworthy, inquisitive and ethical. Are you?

When was the last time you were proud of the company you work for?

WARWICK Castle situated on the River Avon in the county of Warwickshire was originally built by William the Conqueror in 1068. It is steeped in

history and is a fascinating place to visit for both adults and children alike. Just strolling around the 64-acres of glorious grounds where peacocks roam and towering trees and exotic plants thrive, is a highlight, but a wealth of other walk-through attractions and exhibits are just waiting to be discovered around every corner.

* Witness the world’s largest working trebuchet in action as it launches heavy stones 300m into the air, which once would have decimated castle or city walls.

* Eagles, Buzzards and an Andean Condor the largest bird of prey in the world - are all residents in the castle grounds - kept under the watchful eye of a falconer who twice daily holds a Flight of The Eagles demonstration when these amazing creatures take to the skies and fly above the heads of those watching in awe.

* Watch as Warwick Castle’s resident archer displays his agility and power in The Bowman Show demonstrating how this deadly weapon was used in medieval times.

Also located in the castle grounds is the Horrible Histories themed events such as Splat the Rat which kids will love. But it’s the Horrible Histories Live Stage Show which launched last week and will be performed everyday until September 6th, that will excite fans of the books and television series. The tales of the foulest and funniest bits about the history at the castle are sure to enlighten many.

Another way to appreciate the fascinating

history that has surrounded Warwick Castle for centuries, is by visiting the Time Tower. This clever new attraction whisks you through 1,000 years of history in just 15 minutes in a cinema screen environment. Time Tower uses visual technology and transports visitors from the Dark Ages to modern times using 3D and 3D special effects. Portraits on the walls of all the earls who lived in the castle magically talk and move within their frames.

For those planning to visit the castle this summer, the month of August sees the return of one of the ultimate medieval attractions - Jousting. Look forward to the thunder of hooves as fearless knights on horseback go head to head in a fiery battle for victory.

Inside the castle The Great Hall is a sight to behold. Feast your eyes on the many suits of armour and glistening swords, razor-like

spears and other military items decorating the stone walls. The lavish interiors of the State Rooms bedecked with antiques too give a sense of what life was like living here centuries ago.

But, to really immerse yourself into all things medieval an overnight stay in the Glamping Village is a must.

Forty-one medieval tents are situated in the Glamping Village which is located in a secluded area of woodland space within the castle grounds and is poignantly highlighted by colourful jousting flags which flutter in the breeze.

Choose from a King’s Tent, of which there are three available and are the more prominent choice boasting a wooden four-poster bed, two wooden single beds and dressing up box with real armour for guest to try on, or a Warwick Tent of which there are 38 available to hire and come with a double bed and two single beds with all bed linen provided and sleep under the stars.

It may be ‘marvellously medieval’ here, but guests can enjoy some modern-day luxury such as the fantastic shower facilities with thankfully warm water. You won’t go hungry either as a huge feast is laid on in the huge

Banqueting Tent where a Buffet-style dinner is served, hog roast and crumble anyone?

Until dark there’s entertainment outside the Glamping tents down by the river. Children can enrol in Knights School and perfect their sword skills, learn how to juggle in Jester School or try their hand at archery all expertly led by cheery staff in traditional medieval costume.

For those who think history is boring think again. Warwick Castle will delight you in so many ways you’ll want to be clambering back in time, again and again.

I have had many influences on my cooking and been lucky throughout my career to have worked with some incredible chefs. But I think that the biggest influence of all has been my Dad; I worked with him at the start of my career - when I was still at school - and he has taught me the basic skills and the drive that it takes to become chef.

Why did you become a chef?I have always wanted to be a chef, ever since I was about 10 years old. When I was at school I used to work part time with my Dad every weekend and during the school holidays. I have always had a passion for food and how you can take a couple of simple ingredients and put them together to

make the most beautiful of dishes. Who are your favourite chefs? My favourite chefs are my team that works at Chamberlain’s with me. I have some great cooks in my team and they are all very committed and give me 100 per cent. What is your favourite dish/ ingredient? My favourite ingredient at the moment is lobster. We are just about to start the native season and we will be promoting this in the restaurant with several special dishes. These include classics such as Thermidor and traditionally dressed, with Russian salad What is your favourite herb?My favourite herb to use is flat leaf parsley - it is very versatile and we always have it in the kitchen and will go into many dishes What’s in your fridge at home?My fridge at home is nearly always empty! I keep milk and butter, but most of the time I am at work in the restaurant Your worst kitchen nightmare? My worst kitchen nightmare is nearly always related to power or gas! It has happened a couple of times in my career when the power or gas has gone off just before service. You can guarantee that the dining room is full and you just can’t do anything about it except wait, and hope it comes back on…. or serve salads. Best cooking tip for a novice?Start off simply. Learn a couple of basic skills and get a couple of good, sharp knives What’s your last meal on earth, if you had the chance to choose?Lobster and caviar to start with, followed by a good steak with truffles and foie gras. I would skip dessert and go straight for a cheese board with a mountain of stilton and cheddar, and I will finish off with a fine

cognac and a cigar. After all, if it’s the last meal I don’t want any regrets!

ARIES March 21st - April 20thCommunication problems slowly clear. Finding an answer to an ongoing problem is as simple as talking to everyone involved. Be

attentive to those who are directly affected by the situation. Their feedback is crucial to solving the issue. After you resolve this dilemma, you’ll be free to spend more time on creative pursuits. Breathe fresh life into a project that’s been neglected because of personal responsibilities and do more of the things that bring you personal pleasure.

TAURUS April 21st - May 21stYour financial situation is about to take a turn for the better so this is a good time to think about putting yourself on a budget,

starting a savings account or landing a better paid job. If you’ve been unemployed, think about starting your own business. Caring for other people’s pets, plants or children could be profitable service area to get into. Getting a business loan from the bank is a strong possibility. Alternatively, a generous relative will give you the start up money for this venture.

GEMINI May 22nd - June 21stYou’re going through a period of change and it feels terrific. Breaking a bad habit, adopting a new look and embarking

on a fitness programme are among the possibility. Clear out your closet to make space for clothes that make you feel fabulous. You’ll be able to find colours and styles that perfectly suit your image. If you’re looking for work, think about going back to a previous employer. You’ll be welcomed back with open arms. Your love life is sure to benefit from this job.

CANCER June 22nd - July 23rdKeeping a low profile satisfies your secretive personality. In this celebrity obsessed age, you cherish privacy. When people

ask searching questions about your personal life, you’re quick to shut them down. This gives you a mysterious aura that is incredibly alluring. If you want to escape the confines of a certain sector of your life take an advanced class. This will be a welcome outlet for your intellectual curiosity. You’ll enjoy becoming an expert in a fascinating or arcane subject.

LEO July 24th - August 23rdSlowly, but surely, your goals are undergoing a transformation. The things you once valued now seem relatively meaningless.

Don’t be afraid to strike out in a different direction. Getting involved with a religious, cultural or educational organisation will be rewarding. You are tired of focusing on material matters like money and status. Making a positive difference is much more fulfilling. If you want work, apply for jobs at green or ethical employers. You’ll get good responses.

VIRGO August 24th - September 23rdThere’s lots of activity on the career front. It’s important to discuss job offers with your nearest and dearest. They

will be affected by your ultimate choice. There’s a distinct possibility you will be working from home in the near future. This will be a difficult but rewarding transition. Being able to spend more time in the comfort of your own home will be therapeutic. Don’t fight the possibility. Give it a chance to find its feet. You’ll be surprised how much you enjoy the switch.

LIBRA September 24th - October 23rdYou are ready to try something new. Venturing into unfamiliar territory will be intimidating. At times, you will have some

unpleasant shocks. You are starting to realise how many incorrect assumptions you’ve made. This is sobering, but don’t’ be too hard on yourself. Part of the growth process is being willing to admit you were wrong. Returning to a spiritual practice will make you feel less anxious and more open. You need more than money to be happy.

SCORPIO October 24th - November 22ndYour love life sizzles with excitement. Take this opportunity to satisfy your sensual side. When you neglect your physical

needs, you become irritable and anxious. Are you dating someone interesting? You’ll enjoy going to a high profile party together. Are you looking for love? You will find it with someone who knows their own mind and has firm opinions. Take this relationship slow. Enjoying the courtship phase will be lots of fun. There is plenty of time to make a serious commitment.

SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - December 21stYou must accept a greater measure of responsibility in a close relationship. It isn’t fair to expect a loyal friend or romantic

partner to do all the heavy lifting. Whether this means being proactive about making plans or just doing more housework is immaterial. The important thing is to take an honest look at your bond and do better. Just because your family did things a certain way does not mean you should continue the trend. Don’t be afraid to make decisive changes.

CAPRICORN December 22nd - January 20thYou’re very driven, but working around the clock could actually undermine your productivity. It’s important to take well timed

breaks. Focusing all your energy on work isn’t wise. It’s important to cultivate a rewarding personal life to counterbalance your professional responsibilities. While it is to your credit that you want to be the best in your field, you should focus on one area at the expense of others. Think of what would happen if your job fell through.

AQUARIUS January 21st - February 19thYour romantic side is coming out. If you’ve fallen for an attractive newcomer, try not to lose your head. Although

you enjoy their wisdom and worldly wise sophistication, you may not be a good match. Having the same values is critical. This may seem like a minor issue while your physical desire is strong, but it will become increasingly important. Donating time at a charitable organisation will allow you to meet people who share your concerns for humankind.

PISCES February 20th - March 20thYour domestic situation is undergoing some changes. It may be necessary to move to a new place or find a different

living arrangement. Try not to paint yourself into a corner. Although you’re eager to live in a neighbourhood that has lots of diversions, it’s also important to be close to family and work. Enduring long commutes will quickly grow old. Be flexible about where you are willing to move. You might return to an area you once lived as a child.

FOCUS ON Waltham SingersA Sense of Place THE sound generated by a

large choir is quite simply breathtaking and being part of that remarkable sound

when it all comes together is an amazing experience.

Founded in Great Waltham in 1973, Waltham Singers is a mixed choir of 90-plus singers who sing in and around Chelmsford. Their extensive repertoire is designed to appeal to all tastes and ranges from well-known choral works such as Handel’s Messiah and Verdi’s Requiem to new works commissioned by the choir. They often perform alongside renowned Orchestras and engage professional singers and instrumentalists.

Musical Director for more than three decades, Andrew Fardell has a wealth of knowledge which he uses to coach and challenge Waltham Singers to produce music of the highest quality. As one member commented: “We set our standards high and Andrew sets them higher.”

Waltham Singers are busy rehearsing for their next concert ‘A Sense of Place’, taking place June 20 at 7.30pm in Great Waltham Church. Centre-piece of the program is the Premiere

of ‘Songs of Home’ by Essex-based composer Jeffery Wilson. New soprano, 17 year old Holly Putt, who joined the singers

in April says “I’m extremely excited to be singing in the next concert, showcasing all of the hard work that the choir and I have invested. Joining Waltham Singers has enabled me to explore a variety of different choral music and further develop my sight-reading skills. My two favourite pieces are ‘Bushes and Briars’

a folk song from Ingrave and ‘I din knaow’ which is written in our local Essex dialect, both very different to others in the program. The choir has made me so welcome, and I’ve loved the experience.”

Other highlights of the concert include ‘Six Songs from the Bavarian Highlands’ by Elgar, the lively ‘Songs and Cries of London Town’ by Bob Chilcott, plus a performance of ‘The Kestrel Road’ by Peter Maxwell Davies.

Tickets are £13 (£11 conc, £5 U16) from Kate 07808 584826 or visit www.walthamsingers.org.uk.

ROAD safety charity Brake is backing a Police Federation plea for lower drink drive limit and calls for greater priority for life-saving roads policing.

The charity has given its strong backing to calls made recently by the Police Federation – the staff association for all police constables, sergeants and inspectors in England and Wales – for a lower drink drive limit, following evidence from Scotland that the lower limit introduced there last year has led to a marked reduction in drink driving rates.

The Police Federation is also highlighting what it calls the “unprecedented cuts” suffered by roads policing units in the last five years, leaving them unable to properly enforce life-saving road safety laws.

Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive of Brake said: “Brake agrees with the Police Federation that the UK drink drive limit – one of the highest in Europe – needs to be lowered.

“We would like to see an effective zero-tolerance limit of 20mg alcohol per 100ml blood. This would make it clear that even small amounts of alcohol

affect your ability to drive safely, and end the widespread confusion over whether it’s safe and acceptable to have one or two drinks and drive.

“Research is clear that even very small amounts of alcohol impair, hence it should always be ‘none for the road’ – not a drop.

“Brake also echoes the Police Federation’s concern over the severe cuts that have been made to roads policing in recent years, which have been disproportionally heavier than cuts to other areas of policing.

“Given that enhanced traffic policing offers a huge return on investment and a way to avert needless casualties and suffering, this makes no rational, moral or economic sense.

“We urges the Government to make traffic policing a national priority and give officers the backing and resources they need to do their job.”

Brake campaigns for a zero-tolerance drink drive limit through its not a drop, not a drag campaign.

MAZDA has reached a landmark event as the one-millionth Mazda CX-5 rolled off the assembly line at the end of April.

The company’s popular compact SUV achieved the landmark less than three years after going into production in late 2011.

Only one other model from the car maker – the Mazda3 – has reached the figure faster.

Introduced to the fast-growing global segment in February 2012, Mazda’s first-ever compact crossover was also the first production model with the complete range of SKYACTIV Technology and a KODO: Soul of Motion design.

The CX-5 thereby ushered in a new era at Mazda that has helped put the car maker on the road to success.

The model has since won more than 60 awards* around the world, including the prestigious Car of the Year Japan 2012-

2013 as well as numerous best SUV and crossover accolades. It was Japan’s top-selling SUV in 2012 and 2013, and

is also Mazda’s most popular model in several European markets.

“I am delighted to see the CX-5 reach the 1 million unit mark in only three years and five months,” said Masashi Otsuka, CX-5 programme manager.

“I would like to express my gratitude to the people all over the world who have appreciated and supported the CX-5.

“We are committed to continue enhancing this model into the future to ensure that it remains a popular choice among people with active lifestyles.”

In the UK the multi-award winning Mazda CX-5 continues to win praise from journalists and owners alike with more than 19,000 having been sold since its debut in 2012.

Aston Martin show DBX concept

42

ASTON Martin returned to the shores of Lake Como in Italy recently to showcase the stunning new DBX Concept in the esteemed 2015 Concorso

d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.Entered in the event’s prestigious Concept

Cars and Prototypes class, the DBX Concept defies conventional thinking about the high luxury segment and points to a bold new future for GT travel in the 21st Century.

Unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show, the DBX Concept widens the appeal of the iconic British luxury brand and reaches out to a more diverse global audience than ever before.

Ahead of its appearance, Aston Martin Chief Creative Officer Marek Reichman said: “As we explained when we debuted the car, the DBX Concept is designed to challenge the existing status quo in the high luxury GT segment.

“It promises to make luxury GT travel stylish and more comfortable than ever before, but also more practical, more family-friendly and more environmentally responsible.”

Marek and his team at the brand’s global headquarters in Gaydon, Warwickshire, created the DBX Concept to showcase cutting edge engineering as well as a major evolution of Aston Martin’s highly-regarded design language.

Capable of accommodating four adults in comfort, the concept also carefully considers

Sparkling in Italy, the Aston Martin DBX Concept car

day-to-day practicality. It boasts generous luggage capacity, while

the exterior metal work emphasises the brand’s approach of using authentic materials and is made of machined billet aluminium with visible milling lines in a piece of exquisite craftsmanship intended to be seen as the car’s jewellery.

The unique paint finish – Black Pearl

Chromium – has been specially created to mimic the look of a genuine black pearl, and comprises a micro-fine layer of chrome to deliver a level of reflectivity that cannot be obtained through normal paint finishes.

Inside, the deliberate use of non-automotive standard materials generates a uniquely soft, cocooning ambience.

Marek Reichman explained: “The exceptional

craftsmanship displayed on this car – with detailing more typically seen on luxury consumer goods or fine jewellery – really showcases the best of what Aston Martin can be.”

He added: ‘I know the enthusiastic and knowledgeable visitors to this world-renowned Concorso d’Eleganza appreciated seeing such a radical concept that undoubtedly signals a bright future for Aston Martin.”

ALWAYS a popular favourite for many years with UK buyers, Suzuki has

just launched its new Vitara SUV.

Prices start at £13,999 and the cheapest version, the SZ4, now has seven airbags, including a driver’s knee bag, as standard equipment. Also standard are Bluetooth and DAB radio.

As you go up the range, further current-tech connectivity and infotainment features are added on as standard equipment. Also standard both on the SZ-T and range-topping SZ5 models is smartphone audio and navigation linking.

The SZ5 has Suzuki’s version of an automatic braking system, operated by radar, and adaptive cruise control. The distance at which the braking operates can be adjusted according to your needs. As I discovered when by chance following a car down the Cheddar Gorge, it works, thus, in this case, allowing a sheep on the road to escape with its life.

Two engines are on offer: there’s a 1.6-litre diesel and same-sized petrol engine. They both have 120PS, with the diesel emitting 106 g/km and the petrol 123 g/km on cars with two-wheel-drive.

New for the SZ5 is the option of a six-speed automatic gearbox, but you’ll have to wait until July for this to come on stream.

Vitaras have always been quite agile off-road performers and the car’s large wheels and class-leading high ground clearance continue to support this. An optional four-mode ALLGRIP four-wheel-drive system is available. This works in Auto, Snow And Sport with the system changing from the normal two-wheel-drive to four-wheel-drive, while, in the ‘lock’ mode, four-wheel-drive is permanently engaged.

A reasonably testing rocky off-road course proved that the Vitara can cope with this sort of thing.

Suzuki have also made the car able to more personalised than before, with a range of exterior and interior colour combinations. Bright turquoise, copper and red metallics seem to predominate, not subtle, but easy to spot in a car park.

The driving was easy – the course was not designed to push the Vitara beyond its limits, but was aimed to replicate what might be the sort of reasonably common

off-road environment that some Vitara owners might need to manage fairly regularly. The main technical feature that aids progress is the hill descent control. Anyone who knows about off-road driving will be familiar with this device -- you simply descend steep and perhaps slippery inclines controlling only the steering wheel. The car does the rest without any need to touch the brake pedal.

The car also has the hill-start holding feature: you can stop on a hill with the brake, put the gear into neutral and, when you need to set off again, release the brake – you then get time to engage the clutch without rolling back.

On tarmac, the car rides nicely and all the main functions can’t be faulted.

Suzukis tend to be on the bottom rung as far as pricing goes, yet they do most things that more expensive cars do.

As a package, therefore, they are good value for money.

The petrol version tested had a smooth engine with reasonable performance. Zero to 62 mph takes 11.5 seconds.

On the 52-mile test drive, an indicated 46.3 mpg compares with the official combined cycle figure of 53.3 mpg (ALLGRIP versions don’t do so well).

TEST DRIVE Suzuki Vitara

Vitara represents good value

through a nice five-speed manual gearbox. The brakes worked perfectly well, the handling was no problem, the car didn’t lean over or lurch...good marks all round.

I was expecting the new Vitara, which has a shortish wheelbase, to be a touch cramped inside, but it was not at all. Shoulder width in the rear was as good as it was in the front.

The cabin was well fitted out with the console

and instrumentation being straight forward and without gimmicks. The materials were of course not as lavish as in more expensive cars but there was variety and it appeared to be well made. Importantly, the seats were comfortable; however, the test run was around two hours and four hours is nearer the mark for a full appraisal for rear end comfort testing!

The boot was spacious enough for most people and

was able to be configured to have a double floor.

The new Vitara is the first in its sector to achieve a five-star rating in the independent Euro-NCAP tests.

With its updated, contemporary new look and simple financial steps up the three-version range, along with a variety of options, the new Vitara will certainly help Suzuki in its goal to sell as many cars as it has ever done in Britain.

Bond’s century breaks duck CHELMSFORD CRICKET CLUB

1ST TEAMIlford 120 all out

Chelmsford 121-7(Chelmsford won by 3 wickets)

Shepherd Neame Essex League Premier DivisionPlayed at Valentines Park

CHELMSFORD continued their fine start to the season with a nervy run chase against Ilford, completing a win by three wickets.

After winning the toss and electing to bowl, Sam Cook was rewarded for an impressive spell with an early wicket, but although there was a lot of movement available and the bowling generally accurate, Chelmsford were unable to make significant inroads.

Ollie Devenish struck with his first ball to take the second wicket, but the Ilford third wicket pair showed exceptional patience by sticking around and accumulating runs, albeit at a very slow scoring rate.

The pressure of the low scoring rate soon told and Devenish was able to remove Kandola (31) with the score at 73, precipitating a huge collapse to 98 for eight.

Although Tavarasa struck some lusty blows towards the end, Cook (4-34) returned to make the breakthrough and the innings subsided quickly after that. Devenish (4-30) bowled an outstanding 18-over spell showing exceptional control and discipline, figures that would have been even more impressive had his last over not gone for 12 runs.

Although the total was a low one, the pitch had begun to misbehave to

an even greater degree and the chase was not going to be easy against a strong Ilford bowling attack.

After the early loss of Hagen, the Chelmsford innings rather stuttered throughout, with wickets rarely falling in large bunches but with no batsman really getting on top of the bowling.

Chris Prowting (26) was the top scorer, but with five batsman reaching double figures, the target always remained attainable. Nerves were wrought up after the wicket of Bailey left the side at 88 for five but a quick fire 18 from James Clifford reduced the target to just 10.

The eighth wicket pair of Ben Clifford and Devenish combined to guide the team over the line.

THE seconds emphatically maintained their winning start to the season with a ruthless performance against visitors Shenfield.

Shenfield won the toss and opted to bat first on a good looking Chelmer Park pitch, but soon found themselves in trouble at 19 for three. Chelmsford’s opening pace attack of Mark Drain and Liam Keaney bowled well and took early wickets.

However, unbeknown to all, this was, for the batting side, merely the rumble before the storm. After a brief

period of calm the visitors reached 34 for three. And then the storm broke, in the form of leg-spinner Stuart Everard who, having taken eight balls to settle into his rhythm, totally blew away Shenfield’s batting with six wickets in 15 balls to finish with six for 9 inside 4 overs.

With Drain taking two for 22 and Keaney two for 12, Shenfield had been dismissed for 44 in 22 overs lasting 90 minutes, with Chelmsford’s bowling backed up by eight good catches.

The Chelmsford reply was equally brutal and lasted just 34 balls as Paul Jones, who either had a plane to catch, or just switched into T20 mode, smashed 27 from fifteen balls before being bowled running down the pitch presumably trying for a big 6 to win the game. Sunday 31 May

TWO very different batting styles collided and Chelmsford came out on top, finally nailing a good performance.

Steve Pleasant had his first impact on the game with a run out in the second over and then James Arnold

struck in a decent opening spell to make it three for two.

Simmons played shots from the outset and enjoyed a considerable slice of luck early on but then really prospered.

His partners also played in positive vein but did not have his power or range and were kept quieter. A couple of partners had disappeared before drinks but Shenfield were well placed at 130 for four with lots of time to spare. A bad call though left Simmons stranded and run out for 86.

Eventually Shenfield were out for 206 with six bowlers amongst the wickets.

Shenfield’s opening bowlers settled into good line and length bowling and the batsmen were made to work hard. The scoring rate was pedestrian but the bowlers were seen off for the loss of a single wicket.

The rate needed to increase and Chris Drain accelerated his scoring whilst Matt Davis had scored reasonably well from the start of his innings.

A few overs before the last hour was called, Drain was caught for 44 and at drinks Chelmsford needed about 120 with 20 overs and eight wickets left. Davis and Pleasant forged a decent partnership before Davis (42) was well caught on the boundary.

That brought Sean Sullivan to the crease and he played with freedom and sense. Pleasant was well settled by this point and his ability to find

the boundary was key whilst Sullivan picked up singles with comfort.

A flurry of boundaries brought the game to a close and sent Pleasant racing to 80, the winning runs arriving from a six as has probably been the case on many occasions at this small ground.

Second team show ruthless streak against Shenfield

CHELMSFORD’S sides played in black armbands in memory of former first team scorer Tony Edney who passed away last week and they achieved five wins from

five in the league. Significant landmarks were recorded by Steve

Bond with a maiden century and Stuart Everard with six for nine.

Ollie Devenish was the hero for the first team in a hard fought win at Ilford. Ollie and Sam Cook were the main destroyers, each grabbing four wickets as Ilford were bowled out for 120.

The chase was far from straightforward on an unpredictable wicket but a three-wicket win was achieved. The second team had a very short afternoon, the game finishing within two hours.

Visitors Shenfield were blitzed by Stuart Everard (6-9) and all out for 44. The target was knocked off inside six overs for the loss of one wicket. There was the rare sight of an old-fashioned style chase in the third team.

Chasing 207, Chelmsford made a cautious start, kept wickets in hand and gradually built the rate up.

Ultimately with Steve Pleasant (80) playing very well, the target was reached with more than three overs and seven wickets to spare. Simmons (81) had dominated the Shenfield innings with

some good hitting whilst Chris Drain (44) and Matt Davis (42) had laid the foundation for Chelmsford.

Steve Bond (104) made his first ever hundred as the fourth team broke their duck in highly convincing fashion. Phil Arnold (77) was also in good form in Chelmsford’s 266 for four.

Chingford were dismissed for just 100, Luke Wells taking three wickets and Rory Skepelhorn and Huw Davies two apiece.

The closest game at Chelmer Park was the fifth team’s win over Belhus who had at times seemed strongly placed and then came close to holding out for a draw. Jordan Campion (61) provided the backbone of Chelmsford’s innings of 217 for six with Barry Clayden contributing an unbeaten 40.

Shahid made a half century in the chase but fell to Alistair Baldwin and four wickets for Andy Shepherd proved crucial. There was one defeat on the day with a young sixth team losing out to Old Chelmsfordians.

Matt Cook top scored in Chelmsford’s innings and Sam Tremelling took three wickets.

The Sunday second team won a decent match against Forest Gate. Liam Keaney made a half century in Chelmsford’s 190 from 40 overs. The bowlers kept chipping away at the wickets and that just kept the visitors behind the rate.

A YEAR since Chelmsford Cricket Club established their girls section – they are now Essex Under 11 Lady Taverners champions.

Known as ‘The Willows’, they were runners-up in the competition last year and won their final game against Hutton CC to secure the

tournament crown this time around.

Girls section manager, Adrian Tuff, said: “It’s been an incredible year for the girls. When we started last season we never expected the number of girls, now in excess of 30, who we have seen coming to play cricket at Chelmsford,

nor that so many would be selected to play for Essex county age group squads.’’

If you are interested in joining the Chelmsford Cricket Club Willows, then training is at Chelmer Park on Friday nights from 6.30pm to 8pm. More details from [email protected]

LEOPARDS will be on the road when they start their National Cup campaign in September.

For only the second time in their 12-year history the Big Cats will face an away game in the first round of the competition they won in 2006 and 2012, visiting either Southwark Pride or London Thunder Lewisham.

It will be a step into the unknown for the reigning National League champions, as both prospective opponents appear to be newcomers.

The pair play in one of only two preliminary round games on Sunday, September 13 as they look to face the Big Cats seven days later.

If Leopards are successful they face another away trip to London on Sunday, October 4 with either London Westside or Barking and Dagenham Thunder hosting the winner of THE tie.

If they make it through to round three the Brentwood Centre will host the last-16 tie on Sunday October 25, with Westminster Warriors or Brixton Topcats the most likely visitors.

If they make the quarter-finals Division One rivals Derby Trailblazers or Leicester Riders are most likely opponents on November 15.

BUDDING football stars from all over Brentwood took part in UK Football Camps

Spring half-term camp last week. The latest football skills and

techniques were put into practise, and the professional FA coaching team were amazed with the local talent on display.

All who attended not only had great fun on the field, but also off it, with Fifa 15 tournaments, Nerf challenges, Mario-Kart races, Giant Jenga knockdown and of course UKFC’s Got Talent to name just a few.

Head of the Youth Development Programme, Robin Lynn, commented for UK Football Camps said: “We knew this would be a great camp and to have over 100 local children attend made it a fantastic event and we will continue to make sport more

accessible for local youth in the community.

“I am confident that the FA coaching team have once again delivered a top camp. We’ve ensured that every child has not only taken something away with them that will shape their future, but most importantly have had fun and made new friends, which is what youth sport should all be about.”

Whether your child is the next Beckham, or has never even kicked a ball before, UK Football Camps are perfect for everyone and they look forward to seeing you on the summer camps programme.

Registrations for summer camps programme have begun and you can register your child today at: www.ukfootballcamps.co.uk or call 01277 375155 for more details.

ONE OF Britain’s earliest motorsport events is being revived this summer, over 100 years after it first ran in Essex.

The first edition of the Layer Marney Cup, a fuel efficiency trial, took place on June 6, 1914 and went from Southend-on-Sea to Layer Marney Tower, near Colchester.

The original trial was won by F. C. Byford who achieved an average of 42.26 miles per gallon in his Unic car.

Jeanne Byford, right, daughter-in-law of Fred Byford, winner of Layer Marney Cup, and Judith Carr (nee Byford) granddaughter of Fred Byford pictured with the trophy

To create a level playing field among the varying sizes of the entrant’s vehicles, the organisers weighed the cars and set the Ton Miles per Gallon rule, by which the trophy was ultimately awarded.

Byford managed 50.07 Ton Miles Per Gallon to pip A. M. F. Keddie’s De Dion by just 1.3 TMPG.

After being contacted by a relative of Mr Byford, it was decided to recreate the historic rally, explains Sheila Charrington, owner of Layer Marney Tower: “We are re running the event on August 16, 2015, 101 years later.

Starting at Southend, the route will leave Southchurch Park, go through Shoeburyness before winding back to Stow Maries Airfield, where all will stop for lunch in the Officers’ Mess.

“In time-honoured fashion, the cars will be weighed at Stow Maries and will then continue on to Promenade Park, Maldon before completing the event at Layer Marney Tower.”

Sheila added: “Ford has agreed to put in a vintage car and one of their most modern models into the trial and I am taking enquiries from owners of all manner of vehicles.”

“Such has been the response that we now plan to have 10 cars in each group. Just one caveat though, we are after petrol and not diesel cars.”

Sheila is now appealing to collectors, owners and family members of the 1914 participants to take part in the revival: “Obviously the Byford family has remained in Essex and the Keddie’s from Southend have stayed close to their roots but there are some real Essex names in that first entry list, such as Bone and Wilkinson. Other competitors were called Day, Mellor, Greenaway, Gaitskell, Adams and Austin.”

MOTORSPORT

SEVEN triples teams battled it out in the Ted Hasler Trophy competition at Brentwood Bowling Club.

Each team played four games of six ends at King George’s Playing Fields and eventual winners were Brian Martin, Kate Davies and Laurie Darnell on 56 points.

Runners-up on 52 points were Pam Robinson, Les Powell and Ron Waller - the two men playing their first game of the season.

Pam Baker, Ron Jolly and Margaret Rayment were in third place on 42 points.

Ted Hasler was president of the club from 1977 to 1982 and the eponymous trophy was first played for in 1985.

This year’s winners will receive their award at the club presentation night in November.

Anyone thinking of taking up lawn bowling this summer can still book free one-to-one trial sessions at Brentwood Bowling Club.
