Made from flowers in Holland since 1936! What began in 1936 as a flower parade has become the oldest and most celebrated ode to blooms in Europe... Ever since its inception, Zundert in the Netherlands, has hosted an annual flower show Bloemencorso, with an average 50,000 visitors descending on the town to look at the brilliant displays... Each of the competing districts of Zundert which was the home of Vincent Van Gogh construct their own entry and compete in the parade, which occurs every first Sunday in September. According to those behind Bloemencorso, the parade is all the work of dedicated volunteers, who do not profit from the colourful display Creators use dahlias for their breathtaking displays and build gravity defying sculptures. Every float is made from dahlias. A staggering six to eight million dahlia flowers are used to produce the floats. Visit http://www.bloemencorsozundert.nl/ for more information. Bloemencorso has grown in terms of popularity and in the sheer size of the creations, with thousands flocking to gasp at the displays. Held on the first Sunday of every September, the quaint town becomes packed with visitors and, on this occasion, a huge rhinoceros made of delicate flowers.

And here I thought all dahlias had to be black and associated with unsolved murders?

History (translated from Dutch using ImTranslator, so...) Zundert Flower Parade originated in 1936 as a celebration of the birthday of the former Queen Wilhelmina. The first parades were modest in size and consisted mainly of flower‐decorated bikes, scooters and a single farm wagon. Still hit the idea of a flower very directly with the Zundertse population.

During the war years 1939‐1944, the parade was silent, but immediately after the war, in 1945, the line was picked up again. After the war the corso rapidly grew into a major event with international appeal. Flower in the fifties were very fashionable in the Netherlands, and the Zundert parade also attracted interested from the Netherlands. Also, many Belgians and French were able to find the way. To Zundert

Artistic impact  The Zundert parade has always had a strong artistic impact. From the fifties there are good contacts with the art school from nearby Breda. Professional artists on the jury of the parade and advise the designers. The designers of the parade floats, like the wagenbouwers, all volunteers from Zundert. The artistic impact means that even Zundert Egyptians with training at the academy are corso designer, or vice versa: that young designers corso training at the academy to follow.

From the sixties, the dahlia growing bigger addressed. Previously, the dahlias were picked on farmyards in the wider area of Zundert, but later go to the hamlets on to explain. Dahlia fields themselves At this time, the joint dahlia fields in Zundert cover an area of 33 hectares with a total of 600,000 dahlia tubers of dahlia fifty different species. And all the dahlias are specially bred for the parade ...

The parade has no theme. Designers are completely free. There has been a theme parade, in 1990 and 2003, when the parade was the theme of Vincent van Gogh, who was born in Zundert only twice.

Bigger and bigger  The parade floats grow from the sixties steadily in size, but especially in the eighties they increase dramatically in size. The parade is a competition: the hamlets compete and win the parade is one of the most beautiful things one can experience to Zundert. Therefore the hamlets really take out all the stops to outdo each other.

The cars are growing in the eighties so fast that the organizing foundation is clamped to need to ask. The maximum dimensions are set at 19 meters long, 4.5 meters wide and 9 meters high. A presentation may be comprised of several cars. Today, the parade floats often very complex, consisting of several separate cars and often have moving parts. Parade floats contain up to half a million dahlias.

Material Use  Previously, the cars were built primarily of wood. From the late sixties Styrofoam discovered as a building material, especially suitable for making. Finer, more detailed form with And, in the seventies, the use of iron are introduced. Strands reinforcing steel that are welded together lend themselves better to make smooth, sculptural shapes.

Today, hardly used more wood, only iron and Styrofoam. The iron frame is covered with many layers of paper mache (newspaper with wallpaper paste) so that it can serve to bring. Dahlias in the ground as This happens during the last days before the parade. Each dahlia is provided with a nail, and one by one they are mounted on the carriage. In total, around 400,000 dahlias per car.
