esroches island, named after the 18th century governor of mauritius, Chevalier des roches, forms part of the amirantes group of islands

(a remote coral atoll), 230km south-west of mahé in the seychelles, regarded as one of the most pristine, untouched islands in the world. strewn with coco-nut trees, desroches island, the largest island in the amirantes group, is approximately 6.2 km long, 1 km wide, boasting 14km of immaculate, white soft sandy beaches which circle the island.

this secluded island is one of the most beautiful in the indian ocean and home to the island’s only luxurious resort. desroches island resort development was designed by architects sieg de Beer of dg architects and lisa rorich. the design language and planning approach is one of a laid back yet sophisticated, rustic and natural approach, under-stated and exclusive, drawing on an association with natural and organic forms. the villas are raised, low slung island houses built on timber pavilions, optimising the views over the ocean. the developers called for a total development proposal for the island, with a creative approach and emphasis on sustainability and green design encouraged. the island certainly has the spatial capacity to absorb the resort without detracting from its natural charm and feeling of isolation.

Bedrooms typically boast signature bathrooms that open onto private gardens with secluded plunge pools, outdoor show-ers and freestanding bathtubs. in a palette of muted azures, greens and blanched sea whites, the decor incorporates seychelles favourites, such as breezy drapes with organic weaves, together with rattan, rope, stone, fine linen, cool cotton, and magnificent wooden furniture and structures crafted at the island’s alien tree elimination project.
