Jackson has it’s own airport, so it is very convenient to get here! We also suggest looking into a flight to Idaho Falls as they can be cheaper. Just keep in mind Idaho Falls is about 2 hours from Jackson. Either way we reccommend renting a car as there is so much to see and do in this area! With both Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks a vehicle will allow you to do and see so much more while making Jackson Hole your home base.

Jackson hole, WYOR IS IT JUST “JACKSON”?WHERE AM I EXACTLY?

The town of Jackson was named for a prominent fur trapper by the name of Davey Jackson, who spent winters in the area during the 1820’s. Mountain Man Rendezvous were held in the area during this time as a gathering for fur trappers and traders to trade their wares. Davey Jackson and his colleagues William Sublette and Robert Campbell frequented the upper Snake River and the surrounding areas for about a decade, eventually selling out by 1830 and returning to Missouri with a nice profit. The early fur trappers referred to valleys as “holes”. This area was originally referred to as “Jackson’s Hole”, named after Davey Jackson. Over time, the apostrophe “s” was dropped and the valley here is now known as “Jackson Hole” with the town of Jackson located in the middle of the valley.

Grand Teton National park

yellowstone National ParkYellowstone National Park was signed into law by US President Ulysses S Grant in spring of 1872. It is the first National Park in the United States and is widely held to be the first national park in the world. Yellowstone National Park is one of the most visited parks in the American National Park system and is known for its vibrant ecosystem and geothermal features. Accessible by car in the summertime and snow-machine in the wintertime, Yellowstone National Park sees an average of 3.5 million visitors each year from all over the world. The park spans an area of approximately 3,400 square miles, (8,900 square kilometers), and is located mostly in Wyoming, with a small part of the park spilling into neighboring states of Montana and Idaho.

Grand Teton National Park is located just outside the town of Jackson and is situated in between the town of Jackson and the southern entrance to Yellowstone National Park. Grand Teton National Park lies within the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem, one of the largest intact mid-latitude temperate ecosystems in the world. In fact, Grand Teton National Park’s ecosystem still supports flora and fauna found here in pre-historic times. The Teton Range is a stunning backdrop to Grand Teton National Park, with the peak of the Grand Teton reaching 13,775 feet, (4,199 meters) above sea level. Grand Teton National Park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, and sees an average of 3 million visitors during the summer months with world class climbing, hiking and biking spread over an area of approximately 400 square miles, (1,300 square kilometers).

Snake River Full Day with Dutch Oven Cookout

You’ll float for eight miles in the upper canyon then pause at West Table for a bathroom break before you hit the river again and stop for lunch at Mad River’s riverside camp half-way through your trip. There’s no better way to relax than to slow it all down, bring a book, play some games and enjoy a day on the river - all while you wait for your dutch oven lunch, hot off the coals. Slow it down, get away from it all and enjoy the river.

This trip launches from Pritchard Boat Ramp in the Snake River Canyon and winds its way south toward Alpine, WY. You’ll travel 16 river miles from start to finish. The first stretch of river is a flat water float through the upper Snake River Canyon. This is prime bald eagle nesting habitat, so bring your binoculars. Following the float, you’ll head right into the Snake River Canyon for a whitewater experience with a stop for lunch. There are about 8 sets of rapids, ranging from class I and II to class III. Various river features encountered along the way include Lunchcounter and Big Kahuna rapids, Million Dollar Fishing Hole, Gauging Straights and Bailing Straights. You’ll pause just after the gauging straights for lunch at Mad River’s exclusive riverside camp at Blind Canyon, overlooking the two largest rapids in the canyon. At the end of your meal, you will hit the water once again to finish out your whitewater experience with the biggest rapids in the canyon up first. Your guides will inform you on the history of the area as well as the local flora and fauna.

The Snake River Canyon is rich in geological history and your guide will point out some of the features that

make this canyon unique. You might see river otters, osprey and bald eagles on your trip. The lucky few might even catch a glimpse of a mountain goat, a mule deer, an elk or even a grizzly or black bear.

This trip requires check-in 30 minutes prior to launch time. The check-in location is at Mad River located at 1255 S HWY 89, just 2 miles south of town. Transportation from the Mad River boathouse to the river and back is provided on every Mad River trip.
