Student leadership encompasses many of the ideas and intentions that are often described as student participation, student agency or student voice. The term student leadership refers to education principles and practices that give young people the opportunities and support to find their voices, to participate in decision-making, and to understand their rights and responsibilities as active citizens. When students are given the skills and opportunity to lead within their schools, they are empowered to have a real impact on their learning and school environment and are prepared to participate meaningfully in their community. Why is student leadership important to schools? In addition to the rights of young people, student leadership practices are valuable for the ongoing improvement of schooling and society. By allowing and supporting students to be active participants in their schooling, teachers and principals can play a vital role in improving their educational engagement and social awareness. Participation in the life of the school and the community is an important means of fostering the development of skills that provide a foundation for young people’s wider active citizenship, while also meeting more specific educational purposes such as improved student engagement and learning. Student Leadership at Maclean Public Through Student Parliament students have a voice in our school and the opportunity to make a real difference in our school community. As members of parliament, students are responsible for; •Meeting with their constituents and being a voice for those students in parliament •Presenting ideas to parliament that address issues raised by students. •Debating issues that are important to the school community At last week’s assembly, we introduced our school parliament. Our portfolios and ministers this year are: Ministers for Fundraising and Functions: Matilda, Charli, Isabelle, Telleah & CiCi, Ministers for Education: Max, Jed & Robert, Ministers for the Arts: Sarah, Isabelle, Daeja, Siennah & Marlie, Ministers for Sport and Healthy Living: Hayden, Telleah, Lucas & CiCi, Ministers for Indigenous Affairs: Darius,& Shermarl, Ministers for Gardens, Playgrounds and Maintenance: Zach, Aiden, Hayden & Indianah, Ministers for ICT/STEM: Konan, Max, Robert & Eli. The term student leadership refers to education principles and practices that give young people the opportunities and support to find their voices, to participate in decision-making, and to understand their rights and responsibilities as active citizens. Why is student leadership important to schools? In addition to the rights of young people, student leadership practices are valuable for the ongoing improvement of schooling and society. By allowing and supporting students to be active participants in their schooling, teachers and principals

can play a vital role in improving their educational engagement and social awareness. Participation in the life of the school and the community is an important means of fostering the development of skills that provide a foundation for young people’s wider active citizenship, while also meeting more specific educational purposes such as improved student engagement and learning.

We are proud of your achievements. What is Happening in the Classrooms This year all of our classes are studying integrated units of work. In Early Stage One the topic is ‘In Our Community’. Students are learning about their place in their community. Students will talk about their family to the rest of the class and learn how families are different. They will learn about how to stay safe and how to ask for help in their classroom, school and in the community.

In Stage One the topic is ‘Places and Spaces’. Students are learning about the services in their community. They will consider sustainable practices as they design and construct model buildings for their community. They will learn about navigation as they consider the language of direction and location.

In Stage Two the topic is ‘First Contact’. Students are learning about the lives of the First Australians before European settlers arrived in Australia and the causes and reasons for the journey of the First Fleet. They will practise thinking and acting like historians as they are immersed in stories of first contact between Indigenous Australians and European Settlers.

Page 3: Maclean Public School Newsletter...Eli. Arriving and Leaving not be walking through the staff ... PBL Easter Hat : End of term expectations . 6 7 98 Parade 10 : Snap shots from the

In Stage Three the topic is ‘Making Democracy’. Students are learning about the values of Australian democracy and the key features of the electoral process. They will learn about the responsibilities of the three levels of government. They will set personal and social goals and work as a class towards a common goal.

Visiting Performances We have two visiting performances coming up. The first one is “The Attack of the Plastic Time Monsters’ on March 3.

Our second visiting performance is the University of New England’s Discovery Bus on Thursday March 4. This is an interactive science program where students participate in activities designed to engage and stimulate curiosity.

These are both excellent educational experiences. The school will be covering the cost of these performances.

Foodie Friday If you know anyone who might be interest in helping please see the ladies in the office.

The Maclean Rotary Club is holding its first book sale for the new decade on February 28/29 Again a feature of the sale is the large volume of books suitable for children from pre-school to teenage which are free to children. Of course there are plenty of books for the mums and dads --fiction, no fiction, DIY, hobbies etc. These are available at $8 to fill a bag (and the more books can be packed in the bags the better we like it). The sale is at the dining room of the Maclean Bowling Club on Friday, February 28, and Saturday morning commencing each day at 9am until 5pm on the Friday and noon on the Saturday.
