Exploring This Hidden Welsh Gem
EXPLORING THIS HIDDEN WELSH GEM
A small market town, Machynlleth is found at the head of the
beautiful Dyfi estuary in Powys, Mid Wales. A town with a lot
going for it, you’ll discover an array of arts and crafts, mountain
bike trails and the most stunning scenery here.
Machynlleth is a place steeped in Welsh history, too. When it
comes to places to stay, there’s a fine selection of accommodation
to choose from, including the charming Ynyshir Hall.
RICH IN HISTORY
For such a small town, Machynlleth sure has a lot
of history. You’ll discover several historic buildings in
the town including the medieval town house known
as "The Parliament House" in Maengwyn Street.
TOWN CENTRE
Best known as the "town with the clock,” the first thing you’ll notice
on arrival will most probably be the striking town clock. Built by the
townspeople in the 1870's, this iconic clock is the hub of the town.
Places of interest include Maengwyn Street - the main street that
holds the famous Wednesday Markets. With their great variety of
traders and craftsmen, these markets draw in people from all over. If
you continue up Maengwyn Street, you’ll come across the
aforementioned Parliament House and the Tourist Information Centre.
FESTIVALS
Celebrating the life of one of Wales' most famous
sons, The Glyndwr Festival takes place in the first
week in September.
And, then there’s the Machynlleth Festival, which
takes place in the auditorium in The Tabernacle late
August every year.
WALKS, CYCLE TRAILS AND OTHER ACTIVITIES
Home to several of the best Mountain Bike Trails in Wales,
Machynlleth has bike routes suitable for all abilities. Although the
area is renowned for the Bike Trails walkers are also well catered
for in Machynlleth with walks both within the Dovey Valley and on
the surrounding hillsides.
The local walks are complemented by the Glyndwr Way National
Trail. Machynlleth also makes a convenient jumping off point for
visits to the famous Snowdonia National Park,
