Fire Door Safety Week 2017 saw off stiff

competition from the automotive, aerospace and construction sectors to be awarded Campaign of the Year (Fire, Security, Health and Safety) at The Safety and Health Excellence Awards for its success in highlighting the importance of fire door safety maintenance and five simple inspection checks that anyone can do to initiate positive change and improve a building’s fire safety.

2017’s Fire Door Safety Week (FDSW) attracted its highest number of supporters ever, including 273 organisations from the social housing and private rented housing sectors, the construction supply chain, fire and building consultancies and local fire and rescue services. The campaign is industry led, in partnership with the Government’s Fire Kills campaign.

Among the high-profile supporters were London Fire Commissioner Dany Cotton, and Bill Grant, MP for Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock who had 31 years’ service in the fire brigade.

Accepting the award on behalf of the British Woodworking Federation, Iain McIlwee, CEO said, “Thank you to The Safety and Health Excellence Awards for awarding Fire Door Safety Week with this prestigious

industry award. “The success of the

campaign is down to the combined efforts of the British Woodworking Federation (BWF), BWF-Certifire scheme and the Fire Door Inspection Scheme (FDIS) team, but more than anything it is testament to our members who have driven us to help raise awareness of concerns and help promote best practice, not just in the manufacture and supply, but also the installation and inspection/maintenance of fire doors.

“With fire safety high on the agenda, following the tragic events of the Grenfell Tower fire, the 2017 Fire Door Safety Week campaign set out to significantly increase awareness of the benefits of fire doors, a passive fire protection method, and how to ensure their ongoing maintenance.

“Attracting the highest number of supporters to date, the campaign did just that – but our work is not done. Fire doors remain a significant area of neglect, often the first thing to be downgraded on a specification and mismanaged throughout their service life, propped open, damaged and badly maintained. Fire Door Safety Week 2018 is set for 24th to the 30th September, and will continue to raise awareness of the critical role fire doors play and how everyone can play their part to ensure they

remain effective and able to fulfil their life-saving ability in the unfortunate event of a fire.”

Publicity of the 2017 campaign resulted in more than 350 pieces of media coverage, including in the Daily Telegraph and the Mirror newspapers, and 16 broadcast items including on Radio 5 Live, LBC and talkRADIO.

The campaign, now in its 7th year, saw events running across the UK and online, and at its heart was the simple 5 Step Fire Door Check providing users with a simple guide to assessing the health of their fire doors.

Fire Door Safety Week 2018 will run 24th – 30th September, more details at www.firedoorsafetyweek.co.uk

“From my workbench to yours”BY STEPHEN NEWTON OF WESSEX JOINERY

I am sitting in the middle of a field surrounded by

horses and people. Every few minutes the sound of neighing horses is interrupted by a piercing Tannoy and the next rider is off show jumping. Unfortunately, at one jump, it was the other way around with the horse on the fallen rider – who was carried off but seemingly without being injured too seriously.

I am manning a stand displaying a nice box sash window with folding shutters, glistening in a patch of sunshine, along with an Oak Casement and various samples including some wooden ducks! Having the shutters adds something for people to touch and play with – but they are on display and not for sale. So, it is much quieter on this stand than the one’s on either side where they are selling hand-made cushions and lamp shades and I have time between occasional enquirers to start writing this month’s column. They also have lots of people buying little pebbles with words on like ‘love’ and happiness’ and they do not then stop and ask to buy a kitchen or Shepherd’s hut for example. Nevertheless; I

think it just seemed to make sense to have a stand at a local event and with a small pitch fee of £65 made it not too difficult a marketing decision – budget wise.

One of the few people who have stopped to look; is interested in a house full of joinery – if he gets planning for a new house. He also wants a Conservatory / Orangery – so time will tell as to whether the financial outlay of the stand and the time spent setting it up and being there for the day was worth it.

…I just had to stop writing as someone was interested in one of the wooden ducks with boots and laces that bizarrely I have on display and for sale and I am hoping to re-coup my £65!!

Back in the workshop; we are still making some 1.6m wide x 3.2m high doors this month for an upmarket function space, that is very much designer led. However, the designer is not leading from the front, but allows his design to evolve during manufacture rather than before. This at least means that we have repeat orders – just like painting the Forth Bridge. Already the doors have changed from Oak veneered horizontal

banding, to ebony stained Redwood with vertical T ‘n’ G with a sandblasted finish. However, two days ago – just before staining the tongues before assembly - there was a further change; they want us to burn the ones we have made…

…another pause, as a Scottish lady wants to buy one of the wooden ducks… the smaller one - so that it will go in her suitcase. She was not sure whether it could better fit another house she has in Spain rather than her house in Scotland – such

big decisions, surely she might need some joinery for one of her properties….. sadly no; so near and yet so far; she has gone to get some change, but will she be back?

To try to explain a little more about burning our doors. The client is just deciding whether they want to go to the extra expense of setting fire to the doors even though they are already assembled. If he had only thought of this before we had assembled the frames and ledges, it would have

been so much easier. (The Japanese technique is best before assembly and on much larger timber.)

Another part of the design is a purpose made 11.2m running track. The metal engineers who are fabricating this for us have their workshop in a garden

centre and it happened to be there where I came across the wooden ducks to sell on the stand – really more to add a bit of variety to just having windows on display. As it is a quiet morning (That started at 5.30); I have grown attached to the ducks…. but now the lady has returned, paid and I am down to three. It has hardly been a profitable morning with the sale of only one wooden duck – but looking at some of the extravagant horse lorries in the field; I am hopeful that there would be a greater order to come … and finally it did with one appointment to survey some windows and dormers.

At least I have some more good uses of wood this month; that the best way to preserve it is to set fire to it and all we have to do to re-cycle our offcuts is to paint on words like ‘love’ and happiness’ and people will queue to buy them at local trade stands…

“The client is just deciding whether they want to go to the extra expense of setting fire to the doors even though they are already assembled.”

Brooks Joinery benefit from

Felder’s Austrian work ethic, again

Hexagon AB aquires sole ownership of

Licom Systems GmbH

Based in Leiston, Suffolk, Brooks

Joinery have worked with the highest calibre architects and designers over the past 30 years, delivering unmatched designs and attention to detail specialising in quality bespoke windows, doors, conservatories and kitchens. The company was started in 1981 by Colin Brooks where he mostly worked on fitting out and restoring narrow boats. Colin built his first boat at age 11 and his passion for woodworking has developed from there.

Colin first came across the Felder Group at Woodmex whilst looking for a spindle moulder Colin commented

“Felder were the only ones, at that time, that had a spindle moulder that tilted the correct way and since then we have purchased a panel saw which has now been upgraded to a kappa 450, a dual 51 planer-thicknesser and upgraded our original spindle moulder to the profil 45 Z all from the Format-4 range.” He added “All our machines now have the electrical “Power-Drive” controls giving us much greater accuracy and you can just look at the scales to see where they are set.”

“When buying a machine we look for quality and versatility, I have always said when we buy a machine it needs to do everything we could possibly ever want to do and that is what we have

got with the machines from Felder. Our profil 45 is the first spindle moulder we have had with a sliding table, which has been great even with our lack of room within the workshop, it’s helped with tenoning and angle tenoning.

Talking about his experience of Felder, Colin said “we have not had any problems with Felder, you feel that the Austrian work ethic

is more conscientious than some of the other brands that we have previously purchased. The service has always been very good and very quick and over the 10-15 years we have never had a problem; they come

back to us very quickly and resolve any issue. The team is very knowledgeable in all departments; I needed a part and it was quickly identified and with me a couple of days later.”

machines from Felder can benefit your workshop at www.felder-group.co.uk or call 01908 635 000 for more information and you can watch the full testimonial on YouTube at Felder Group UK TV.

Hexagon AB, a leading global provider of information technologies that drive productivity and quality

across geospatial and industrial enterprise applications, has acquired sole ownership of Licom Systems GmbH, a German distributor of Alphacam CAM software for woodworking, metal and stone cutting. The company will operate within the Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence division as part of Vero Software, makers of Alphacam and several other production software solutions.

Based in Aachen, Germany, Licom Systems GmbH was founded as a joint venture in 1996 with the aim of developing and marketing manufacturing support software. In 2011, the company holding shared ownership of the business became part of Vero Software, which was subsequently acquired by Hexagon in 2014. Licom Systems employs 11 people, who will continue to support the Alphacam product within a new business unit of Vero Software serving Germany and other German speaking regions of Europe. Licom Systems CEO Stephan Schneider will manage the new unit, maintaining the longstanding and successful working relationships with the wider Vero Software and Hexagon businesses.

“The acquisition of Licom Systems guarantees a bright future for the Alphacam business in this important market,” said Steve Sivitter, CEO of Vero Software. “The team in Aachen brings a wealth of software expertise and knowledge of the woodworking, metalworking and stone-cutting industries, and they have worked as part of the extended Vero Software team for a number of years. Bringing Licom Systems GmbH on board will ensure security and provide the basis of our long-term investment and business development strategy.”

Licom Systems GmbH was fully consolidated as of 21 December 2017. The acquisition has no significant impact on the results of Hexagon.

As the range continues to go from strength

to strength since it’s first introduction to the UK joinery market, Mighton Products has launched a dedicated website for its Mighton Ankerstuy range.

The new site, which acts as an information hub for the paints and coatings range, has been designed to reflect the recently-rebranded Mighton Ankerstuy style, and the wider Mighton brand aesthetics, as Marketing Director Jim Herrington explains.

“The satellite website goes hand in hand with the new Mighton Ankerstuy branding, including the new paint catalogue launched earlier this year and the updated paints and coatings section on the main Mighton website, where customers are redirected to from the new site for placing all orders. With feature-rich sections including Mighton’s core paint values, technical advice and of course user friendly navigation, it will be the one-stop-shop for our joinery customers looking at the exterior, interior and specialist paints we offer.”

Mighton has answered the call from joiners and factory coaters with the creation of a quick-drying exterior

paint with the potential to be touch-dry for recoating in as little as 30 minutes in ideal conditions.

The water-based formulation, named Modifica Quick Dry – or Modifica QD – is suitable for all exterior wood types including Accoya, and offers the same no-compromise performance and finish as all other Mighton Ankerstuy coatings. It was designed in response to growing demand for a quick-drying finish, especially among factory finishers.

Mighton Technical Coatings Director Graham Avery explained: “The move towards production line manufacture and factory finishing is still growing at a pace and more and more joiners told us they needed quicker drying paints to speed up their processes.

“We worked very hard with our partners at Anker Stuy to develop a formulation that would live up to their demands without compromising on performance or finish. The result is a coating with a typical touch-dry time of as little as 30 minutes where the correct recommended drying conditions are implemented.

“This not only means faster and more efficient throughput for anyone who is factory processing, but it’s also a great boost for any other joiner who is in a hurry; whether it’s to recoat, mask an edge for two toning or simply get a finished piece ready to take to site.”

Modifica QD is available in all the same opaque colours that are offered with other the exterior paints in the Mighton Ankerstuy range.

Its introduction comes shortly after the company launched its new and extended paints and stains range with three times the colour choices as well as the addition of Interior and Specialist coatings.

Mighton Chairman Mike Derham said: “We are always ready to listen to what joiners and coaters want from a paint to help them do the best job they can, as cost-effectively as they can. This is the thinking that led to the creation of Modifica QD and we are sure it will give them exactly what they want.”www.mightonproducts.com

Dedicated website for Ankerstuy customers

Quick-dry range for factory finishers

In addition, Mighton has made the full extended range of standard colours available on its main website for customers to order, as well as promoting its renowned colour match service. Since the broader range of paints came online in February the company have reported a definite upsurge of interest. Customers now have access to ordering not just exterior finishes but also interior and specialist products, including both opaque and transparent types and with colour matching available across the range.

Solidifying its partnership with Netherlands-based paint manufacturer Anker Stuy Verven B.V, Mighton remains the sole trusted

UK distributors of Anker Stuy products since first aligning with the firm in 2016. Chairman Mike Derham adds: “We’re proud to now be able to brand the products as Mighton Ankerstuy for the UK market and also of the

new dedicated website that provides our customers with a wealth of useful, practical information, both on the details of the range and how

to get the most from the products.”

When the heat is onNews

Where end use involves hot or steamy

conditions, you probably know better than most that there is nothing to beat a PUR adhesive for prevention of water ingress, or peeling of edgebanded panels. Especially if you are a smaller manufacturer and you don’t run your edgebander continuously, even though it makes sense to switch from EVA for some products, you’ve probably been put off the idea of using PUR because of the unavoidable clean-down procedure after use. At Holz-Handwerk, the adhesive specialist, Kleiberit, showed it is firmly on your side by introducing a inovative Polyurethane formulation you can use, leave in the melting pot and reuse up to 24 hours later.

“Companies are becoming more quality conscious,” commented Kleiberit’s Wolfgang Hormuth on the Holz-Handwerk stand. “We are seeing many companies make the first step from using cost effective EVA products to Polyolefin products because some Polyolefin products provide a higher heat stability compared with EVAs. We are introducing two new Polyolefin co-polymers here at Holz-Handwerk that offer a step up from EVAs in terms of performance. However, there is no substitute for a PUR adhesive, and this is where we have been doing a lot of development. We know there is resistance in the market to PUR, especially among smaller users. For this reason, we have formulated a brand new PUR for this

very important segment of the market because we want to help small and midsize companies gain benefit from the increased product quality it provides.

“Our newest offer in the Polyurethane area is 707.6.40, a natural coloured PUR, and 707.6.41, a white PUR. What’s different about them? This new PUR allows the manufacturer to keep it

in the melting pot for up to 24 hours without having to clean either the rollers, or the melting pot. If a small or medium size company consumes only half of the glue in the melting pot, they can switch off the machine after a couple of hours use without cleaning or dumping the remaining adhesive. A couple of hours later, or even the next day, they can switch

on the machine and run it exactly as they did before. The glue will perform just the same.

“The nice part of this product is, despite its good stability in the melting pot, after the application and after the processing, once it is cross-linked it will have the same performance as standard PUR. That means heat stability of up to 150 degrees Celcius and very good water and steam resistance. It will perform exactly like you expect of a PUR, so you can almost run the handling like a thermoplastic product but still enjoy the properties of a Polyurethane product.”

Kleiberit 707.6.40 and the white version, Kleiberit 707.6.41, promise excellent green strength with no stringing as well as very good temperature resistance, running stability and final strength. Moisture, water and steam resistance are exactly as you would expect

“We are seeing many companies make the first step from using cost effective EVA products to Polyolefin products because some Polyolefin products

of a Polyurethane product that bonds the edge of the substrate. Both can be used with polyester edges, melamine resin edges, PVC, PP and ABS edges with prepared backing, non-compacted resin paper edges, solid lippings and veneer edges.

“We think it’s a very good step to enable small to midsize companies to run PUR without it having a significant negative impact on their machine if they forget the cleaning,” added Wolfgang. “Up to 24 hours, you can run the machine with no cleaning at all but afterwards, it is

recommended that it is cleaned. Like any other PUR, after 24 hours it will start to cross link. However, you can extend that period. If you run it one day, run it the next day within 24 hours.”

In cost terms, Kleiberit 707.6.40 and 707.6.41 sit within the range of a standard polyurethane glue, so you get all the advantages – plus a significant time benefit. It’s also available in a range of packaging options that’s designed for smaller users.

Cabinet Vision saves time

and labour for Langstaff-Ellis

FurNiture News

A high-end interior design and furniture company

says Cabinet Vision software plays a vital role in their recently introduced automate manufacturing process, contributing to their growth.

Langstaff-Ellis describes itself as a “full design and manufacture house,” splitting its work around 50:50 between end-user clients, and a range of designers, architects and developers, handling concept and design through to the installation of bespoke carpentry for a full home interior.

Managing Director Ed Birks says they work in a substantial number of high end residential and commercial properties, creating everything from kitchens, wine rooms, libraries, and dressing rooms, catering for a range of styles including ultra-modern minimalistic, and a more ornate look.

The company, which has been in business around eight years, began investing in CNC machinery and software in 2016. “We felt there was a huge amount of ground to be gained by automating the processes. Our Homag beam saw and drilling and routing centre came first, but we found that programming each individual pattern was taking several days for a large project, so we brought Cabinet Vision in to overcome that.”

The original 3D models are designed in SketchUp. Once

Alex Langstaff-Ellis (left) and Ed Birks (right)

the files are imported into Cabinet Vision, the specialist woodworking software then produces the component list for everything that needs to be manufactured. “Cabinet Vision creates all the CNC

files for our flat panel material and carcases, internal components and drawer boxes, along with worktops where necessary, and cutlists for all the solid wood components.”

FurNiture News

He says their biggest challenge in the past has been the amount of time and labour required to produce technical drawings and CNC files, and the associated risk of human error. “Cabinet Vision now produces all our technical drawings in half the time, and as the sales team also use it, our technical design costs have reduced significantly.”

The Cabinet Vision journey for each project begins after the quotation and specification. “By that time we already have the agreed materials and style, so the technical design department inputs the material data and hardware schedules…essentially setting up a jobfile, ensuring every element for the next stage has been imported.”

The sales designers then produce a complete set of designs, which Ed Birks says are all fully technical, including hardware. “This means that only marginal tweaks are ever required when they go back to the technical design team, ahead of a final check before going into production. From the point of sign-off, layouts and technical drawings are produced for the workshop, and Cabinet Vision’s Screen-To-Machine module is used to transfer the NC code to the machine tools.”

Langstaff-Ellis works closely with a company called Cutlist, which is located in the same building at Chinnor in Oxfordshire, and whose Managing Director is Ed Birks’s business partner, Alex

Langstaff-Ellis.Cutlist provides a cutting

and edging service, supplying cut-to-size panels and edge banding for the woodworking, interior and furniture industries shipping throughout the UK. “The partnership began when Langstaff-Ellis had expanded to the point that it needed to increased output without larger premises or additional staff,” says Ed Birks. “Cutlist was created to serve this demand, and is now a thriving business in its own right, working with carpenters, joiners, cabinet makers, interior designers, builders and developers.”

Langstaff-Ellis optimise all their projects in Cabinet Vision and send the cut file through to Cutlist, which then reoptimises the file before forwarding it to the Homag beam saw.

“Langstaff-Ellis are currently developing a CNC flat pack service whereby their clients can submit a design of their own, and we’ll will input this data into Cabinet Vision, finalise the technical design, and then machine the panel components for the project using their CNC router. This means the client can receive a bespoke flat-pack kit for their project.”

In conclusion, Ed Birks says: “Cabinet Vision brings all aspects of our operation together, and means we can produce our CNC files quickly and accurately.”

Fein multi-tools – Josche’s “go to” tool for over 15 years

Best-in-class results for Alphacam’s new nesting engine

Tests on the new nesting engine unveiled in

Alphacam 2018 R2 show a 17 per cent improvement in material yield.

Using proprietary technology to deliver what Brand Manager Hector Henry says are “best-in-class geometry,” toolpath optimisation and part handling, the nesting engine also provides faster calculation times, along with improved feedback and graphics.

And he says the overall theme of the latest release is to save time and improve productivity.

Parametric Rules have now been migrated to C# and have an enhanced GUI and functionality, allowing for greater control, improved UX and simpler, more streamlined, logic statements, which he says has improved productivity and reliability.

The Face Milling Cycle has been enhanced, and is now part of Alphacam’s

Core Functionality, creating intelligent toolpaths, allowing user to face (surface) mill irregular and multiple geometries. “This improves productivity, as the user doesn’t need to create several operations to achieve the same result.”

Productivity has also been improved through the new Order by Intersecting Geometry function which saves significant time when ordering the sequence of a complex job. It works

by letting the user select a previously created geometry to define the order of geometries or toolpaths, based on those which intersect the selected geometry first.

The Parametric Sketcher is now considerably more powerful, thanks to an updated UI, meaning the window can be resized. “This provides greater visibility over the Parameters and Actions list, which will be essential for managing complex projects.”

There are also improvements to the Sketcher’s geometry creation tools, for creating fillets and chamfers as part of the Geometry creation tool set. This improves productivity as it does away with the need to calculate those points.

Enhancements to Alphacam’s dimensioning system provide greater clarity when printing and presenting information. User-defined suffixes for both the primary and alternate units – as well

as a scale factor – mean that two separate values can now be displayed.

Importing CAD models has been updated through the support of SolidWorks configurations. “Alphacam now has a new interface for users to select which configuration of an assembly to import, without the need to ascertain that the last version saved in SolidWorks matches the one they want,” says Hector Henry. www.alphacam.com

We interviewed Josche Frankenberger

last October following the launch of the new generation of Fein Multi-tools in 2017. An experienced prop maker and furniture designer, he answers questions on his work, talks about his workshops and discusses his reasons for using and

investing in Fein, nearly 2 decades on.

26 October 2017: Josche. Frankenberger has been a self-employed for around 20 years, using the FEIN MultiMaster for over fifteen of those years. Josche got involved in the construction of props and furniture through his work as a photographer’s assistant. He discovered

there was a demand for good stage design – and this rapidly expanded into interior work, set and exhibition stand construction. Since the start of 2016 he has been designing furniture in the High Black Forest, Germany. He offers workshops where he instructs participants in how to build or restore their own pieces of furniture.

FEIN: You design your own furniture, how did you get started in this field? Josche: Initially I built my own furniture for a very practical reason: I couldn’t afford the furniture I liked and I just didn’t like anything that was affordable, so I started to design my own furniture, building tables, beds, benches, cupboards and shelving. I like creating things that are personal and that people like to have in their homes.

FEIN: You offer seminars on furniture construction and design at your

workshop? How did you hit on this idea?Josche: My workshops are a real pet project for me where I wanted to convey my passion for working with wood, and how fascinated I am by the most living of all materials. I spent a lot of time looking for the right location. It needed to be something really special, a place offering me and the participant’s tranquillity, well away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

FEIN: What do your workshops focus on?Josche: They concentrate on producing an individual piece of furniture. I design several pieces of furniture and produce a prototype of each one. For example, one participant might be looking for a table and builds exactly the table he or she wants under my supervision: they select the wood – oak, bamboo, birch – and size they want. In another workshop, I help

the participants restore old furniture. They bring the item with them, be it a cupboard they found at a flea market or something they have inherited, and together we work out how to restore it.

FEIN: Why do you like Fein and continue to use it?Josche: As a craftsman, I have long been familiar with FEIN and valued their products. I use my 15-year old MultiMaster typically for sanding and sawing. I like most is that the tool sits comfortably in the hand, can be used for long periods of time due to the vibration decoupling, and of course, Starlock, which impresses me both as a great sanding and sawing machine.

Fein currently has

three tiered versions of its multi-tool: The Multi-Talent represents an entry level machine, the Multi-Master provides the typical tradesman a powerful machine capable of meeting many applications, regularly, and the Super-Cut is the most powerful multi-tool in the market.

All machines are available as cordless, and all are supported by the largest range of accessories in the market (Starlock). Fein presently is offering end-users its cordless Multi-Talent at an RRP of £196.95, with a free lamp and 3 free blades (worth – £67.90). https://fein.com/en_uk/news/promotions/perfect-work-results-everywhere-0772/

New addition to Ney’s

EBM rangeKDP 100We are pleased to announce the birth of a new addition to our EBM range of edgebanders.

Many of our smaller customers have always admired and aspired to our range of EBM machines but due to space considerations were forced into alternative choices.

The new KDP 100 machine now “fits” the bill. Measuring only 2500mm long, it is ideally suited to the smaller workshop.

Whilst smaller in stature it does not compromise on quality and performance borrowing the glue pot, end trim saws and top and bottom trim stations from the KDP 200 and 400 machines.

Even the tape table is full sized meaning a full roll of 2mm edging can be used without problems. With pre-sets for fast changeover from thick to thin tape and EBM’s legendry build quality it’s well worth a visit to our In-House Show where the machine can be seen demonstrated.

KDP 400The EBM KDP 400 edgebander is proving to be the most popular machine built by EBM at the moment, in terms of quantities sold. With pre-milling, end trim saws top and bottom trim corner rounding scraping and buffing it represents excellent value for money and adheres to the EBM mantra of attention to detail and most importantly for edgebanders, consistent quality of finish.

With about half of UK manufacturers either currently nesting panels or moving towards that process the ability to edge band the pre-drilled panels perfectly is becoming more important. The nesting option on the KDP 400 eliminates the risk of the trimmers and scrapers “dipping” into the edge and producing an inferior panel.

So, whether you’re nesting already or planning to go that way in the future take a look at this exceptionally well specified machine and compare the results, price for price with any other machine on the market. You will not find it lacking.

Airtronic ExcelIt is no exaggeration to state that the EBM 110 series edgebanders lead their class in terms of reliability and performance.

Countless machines are running throughout the U.K. and Ireland with an unprecedented degree of customer satisfaction.

The new Excel machine combines all the best that EBM have to offer in one machine, with pre-milling, end trim saws, double top and bottom trim with flat and profile scraping and buffers. Sounds good so far. Now add panel protection and cleaning sprays and it gets better. Then add the Airtronic seamless edging option which gives a perfect joint every time and it gets exciting, and to top it off it’s all enclosed in the new roomier hood with vertical sliding access doors and a motorised pressure beam.

For more information call Ney Ltd on 024 7630 8100

“Whilst smaller in stature, the KDP 100 does not compromise on quality and performance borrowing the glue pot, end trim saws and top and bottom trim stations from the KDP 200 and 400 machines.”

CNC machines have revolutionised

production in joinery shops. But manufacturers are still turning to small, single task machines to free up bottlenecks and to just do that one thing perfectly. Woodworking News talks to joinery enthusiast, Mighton’s Mike Derham.

Craft manufacturers have never been more popular, whatever they are producing. The pleasure of knowing that something – anything – has been produced by hand, using honed skills passed down through generations, is appreciated by most. Craft-based businesses, by their very nature, remain small but high quality, with joinery being no exception. However, in order to survive, even craft joiners will invest in automated production to a degree so as to up volumes to commercial levels.

With the cost of complex CNC equipment coming within the budgets of small producers, the efficiency and precision that such equipment brings to a business may be the difference between success and failure. And as many window fabrication businesses have found, automated machinery has been essential to offset the skills shortage that continues to dog British industry.

Mike Derham is well known for his enthusiasm for craftsman-produced box sash windows and has built a

Jack of all trades? Master of one

Mike Derham

business around this. Having earned his spurs renovating and manufacturing such windows for period houses, in the early ‘Eighties Mike became aware of the patchy availability and quality of high quality hardware for box sash frames and formed Mighton Products to plug the gap. The ensuing years have seen Mighton expand its product offer to include hardware for timber and PVC-U sash frames and also ancillaries including paints and coatings and, the subject of this interview, specialist single-purpose production machines.

“Many business could not survive without CNC machines,” said Mike. “Although I believe that the best is gained from them by people that truly understand the products they are producing and have a passion for what they are doing. They allow volume high quality production to bring the economies of scale that are simply unsustainable through manual production.

“However, we became aware from our customers that bottlenecks were growing in some areas of the production line and we agreed to look at these areas to see what we could come up with,” explained Mike. “Two areas we have addressed so far are glazing bead jointing and end scribing, and we have other operations under development.”

In addition to volume products many smaller operations produce one-offs, either totally bespoke windows or doors for example, or perhaps more commonly, derivations of standard products. And it is typically these circumstances in which the use of CNC machines can become a sledgehammer to crack a nut. Quite simply it is not, in broad terms, the best use of such technology and why the market for small, relatively inexpensive single-function machines is growing.

Says Mike: “Just as technology has driven the cost of CNC machinery down and their complexity up then so too have clever electronics, digital controls and programming allowed the development of small, inexpensive semi-automated machines that can be used for small unit runs.

These then allow the CNC to do what it does best, without interruption. I am not suggesting that small, dedicated machines can do anything better than a CNC, but single-task machines simply allow basic functions to be carried out without

interrupting the flow of the CNCs, which should be busy making money for the workshop.”

CNC technology has not been embraced by every timber frame making business, either due to the decision to remain

dedicated to craft methods or simply because the company has not taken the financial leap. In such circumstances dedicated, semi automatic machinery may be considered, with no loss of craft-integrity. These machines are ideal for carrying out repeat tasks that craft skills are wasted on and will allow greater efficiency and lower cost per unit without sacrificing a commitment to hand-made quality. “Machines such as those we have developed will actually carry out the tasks for which they were designed to a higher standard and with greater consistency,” insists Mike. “This can only enhance small batch and one-off joinery, allowing more time to focus on the parts of a frame that require it.”

Getting the right Kut

PaNel saws

Homag’s focus for the year is creating a range

of solutions using both automated and networked production in order to increase efficiencies and simplify production for even small to medium sized businesses.

In order to simplify the machinery range, Homag has overhauled its portfolio so that each machine name now clearly explains its function. Under this new policy, this means that all of Homag’s saws, for example, come under the Sawteq banner. As well as a new name, the machines have had a redesign with new features and a fresh, contemporary look.

The Sawteq B-200 – entry levelAs part of the Group’s drive for clarity and simplicity, Homag has combined the features of its two previous HPP and HPL saws to create the Sawteq B-200. Historically, only the HPL

At Sagetech Machinery we are proud of our complete range of British designed and manufactured

Vertical Panel Saws. From small businesses to large manufacturers we have a vertical panel saw that will suit your requirements.

The Koolkut KK range of Vertical Panel Saws for cutting sheet materials has been designed for medium to heavy industrial use. Intelligent design and state of the art manufacture has resulted in highly competitive pricing with enhanced ruggedness and cut quality. Central to this design are the linear shafts and sealed bearings which give life long, high precision and smooth operation whilst also resulting in major cost saving. Unique to these machines are the angle cutting options which enable the cutting of simple and compound angles to the full board size of the machine. The KK is designed for those needing a more robust saw, Ideal for cutting aluminium, wood, mdf, dibond, foamex, corex, plywood, acrylics and perfect for veneered board/ MFC material. The KK comes with a Festool portable saw TS75 which has a 3-year manufacturer’s warranty.

Sagetech Customer Rob Coles had this to say about his Koolkut KK “It really has saved us space, with the added extraction facility there is virtually no dust. It is much more accurate than our previous methods. The finish is better, and if we are doing several repetitive cuts, it is so much faster. I can just set the gauge and I know I have got an accurate square cut. I would strongly recommend this machine to others”.

actions from the machine operator. Homag is reversing this relationship by making cutting solutions react intelligently to the operator and guiding them through the processing in an optimal way.

Both the entry level Sawteq B-200 and the B-320 flexTec saws are tapio ready and so can take advantage of the innovative, cloud-based high performance software including innovations such as CADmatic 5 and intelliDivide – the advanced optimisation software. Launched at the Holz-Handwerk trade fair in March, these solutions are driving this human-machine interaction change and delivering maximum productivity and efficiencies.

The ultra-modern high-end software CADmatic 5 saw controller uses the innovative powerTouch operation with appealing graphical assistance displays to ensure totally intuitive operation and fast, easy handling. This software ‘thinks’ ahead,

automated cutting cell which revolutionises batch size 1 production using a robotic arm. Providing the basis for creating highly flexible cutting patterns, the B-320 is designed specifically for batch size 1 production. The saw procedure is fully automated with all handling processes, including removing the part from the cell, being handled by the robotic arm.

The Sawteq B-320 flexTec is available as a stand-alone solution and also with a high level of interlinking, addressing the needs of both the trade and industry size manufacturers.

The latest version of the B-320 flexTec comes with the option of including fully automatic parts destacking onto lifting tables. The big advantage of this feature is that it opens up the possibility of periodically unmanned operation for the non-interlinked version. This is achieved by a newly developed algorithm for the destacking software. Using this software, the robot independently buffers selected parts and creates stacks that are completely stable as well as optimised for subsequent stations.

Additional options for the Sawteq B-320 flexTec include automatic outfeed via roller conveyors; lifting tables for automatic destacking in the working range of the robot, or combinations of the two.

Redefining the human-machine interactionUp until now, the saw has determined the production sequence, expecting certain

models featured a lifting table however, the new B-200 is an entry level, horizontal panel dividing saw available both with and without an automatic lifting table as standard.

The two versions of the Sawteq B-200 feature a blade projection of 60 mm, with options for higher projections available. The model with the integrated lifting table increases throughput. It can be fed by forklift truck, with entire books of panels that are then singly and automatically pushed onto the rear machine table for the cutting process. This not only saves time, but also improves ergonomics and speeds up the production process.

As well as an automated lifting table, the B-200 is available with many extras including the destacking module – LITE. This features an integrated assistance graphic which always indicates the correct destacking location. There is also the option to have intelliGuide basic on the

Sawteq B-200. With this, LED signals at the cutting line show the operator the next work steps directly on the saw, minimising the need to look at the control screen and thus reducing errors.

The Sawteq B-200 can be equipped with 800 mm wide air cushion tables (instead of the standard 600 mm) ideal for the handling of large and heavy panels. To increase output even further, the saw can be equipped with 95 mm saw blade projection; this is in addition to the existing options of 60 or 80 mm saw blade projections.

showing the next work step on the flat screen monitor until this step has been executed. Almost all Homag saws are now fitted with this saw controller – from the small Sawteq B-130 right up to the top model Sawteq B-600.

“These saws epitomise the Homag Group’s approach to machine and software development. The aim is to make advanced automisation and control available to even the smallest of woodworking shops,” claims Homag UK managing director Simon Brooks. He concludes, “We are looking forward to showcasing all the Homag innovations at this year’s industry event, W18 which promises to be far and away the most exciting and game-changing show yet.”

Woodworking machinery distributor, TM Machinery Sales Ltd, has opened its brand new showroom in Leicester.

TM Machinery’s sales and after-care service.

“We had a very clear vision when it came to building our new showroom,” explains Matt Pearce, Managing Director of TM Machinery Sales Ltd. “We wanted to showcase our business and our machinery brands to our visitors, whilst also offering everything they would need to make an informed decision about the purchase of their new machine.”

With this in mind, TM Machinery has installed an entry level, middle and top end vertical panel saw into its demonstration area. Each machine features various additions, including manual measuring stops, digital reads outs, automatic positioning systems and backing options, giving visitors a unique opportunity to learn about each model and its capabilities.

As well as new machinery, a variety of refurbished vertical panel saws are also on display and available for demonstrations. Matt explains, “We have been refurbishing second hand Striebig’s for many years. Because our used machines sell so quickly, we rarely have a fully refurbished machine available to view.

These permanent fixtures give visitors a good example of the lengths we go to when refurbishing and installing a used model and it has already proven to be a great sales tool.”

The extended spares department highlights the company’s growing portfolio and commitment to the industry. “Striebig is known for its build quality and longevity. Vertical panel saws dating back to the 1960’s can still be supported and,

whilst many manufacturers rely on machines becoming obsolete after 10 years, we still regularly maintain saws that are over 30 years old. In order for us to continue this level of service, we need a sizable spares department that reflects the increasing number of Striebig models we work with.”

Matt adds, “As well offering our customers an opportunity to learn about our machinery brands, we’re keen for our new showroom to promote TM Machinery and what we stand for. Since moving to our premises in 2002, we’ve double our workforce and now offer our largest range of machines to date. We believe that by introducing a new showroom and upgrading our facilities, visitors will get a good understanding of who we are and the level of service they can expect from the TM Machinery team.”

Automation is a hot topic for 2018 within

the woodworking industry and Homag’s latest digital innovations and announcements are set to make a mark. With its motto, ‘Your Solution’, Homag has created a range of automated solutions based around its customers and their individual production requirements.

Recognising that all workshops need flexible and efficient solutions, Homag’s machinery range has been developed to shorten throughput times, maximise stock and board usage and lower production costs. With a range beginning at entry level and leading up to industrial sized machines, even the smallest of manufacturers can have access to the latest automated solutions to ensure they remain competitive.

New Homag product names: simple and easy-to-understandMaking history at Holz-Handwerk 2018, Homag unveiled its updated brand

identity to the woodworking industry along with a new product structure and modern machine re-design. The new HOMAG brand identity not only consists of a new company logo but also a complete restructure, branding and design of all its machinery.

After initially combining all of the Homag Group brand names under one single ‘Homag’ name in spring 2017, Homag is continuing its focus on making its machinery range straightforward for all. Homag has now restructured its product names so that each machine clearly states its function. For example, Homag edge banding machines are now under the name ‘Edgetq’ and machines using saw technology are all labelled as ‘Sawteq’. The new machine names will ensure that HOMAG’s product range is consistent for both the sales team and the customer.

The new machine generation from HomagAs well as a new name structure, Homag’s machinery range has a fresh new look. The modern

The data tapio produces allows companies to monitor their entire production process, ensuring they are maximising their equipment’s performance at all times. It also reminds the operator when future maintenance needs to be facilitated or sends a warning when a critical value exceeds or falls below a certain level. This reduces any possible downtime and ensures peak production times are not compromised. Accessible through an app on a mobile phone, tablet or even smart watch, tapio is suitable for the small workshop right up to global corporations.

Simon Brooks, managing director at Homag UK concludes: “The digitalisation of production is a big topic driving Homag forward this year. Providing innovative solutions for the customer has always been at the forefront of our developments

and the recent launch of tapio, our digital production platform, really emphasises this.

“We are set on making digital automated solutions more accessible to customers than ever before, whether they are an entry level or industrial sized workshop. Our focus is to find a personalised solution to each individual’s production challenges as Homag continues to move forward with our customers. Not only do we pride ourselves on being able to find the right solution for each customer, but also on offering ongoing support as a knowledgeable and reliable partner to assist with any production queries.”

machinery design reflects the company’s transition with the digital generation. The design features a crisp white machine body with a new dark grey Homag logo with blue accents. Whilst the outside of the machines have had a modern uplift, the outstanding technology which has made Homag a pioneer in the woodworking industry is better than ever.

Design meets digital – a new technology eraHomag’s focus for 2018 onwards is based around Industry 4.0 and the digitalisation of technology

to bring the benefits of automated solutions to all trade and manufacturing companies. This digital focus has seen Homag build upon its catalogue of innovative machinery by designing solutions which are even more intuitive and unique for users.

At the heart of Homag’s digital solutions is tapio, the digital platform launched to make networked production even more accessible to all workshops. It provides live machine status updates across the whole production facility and not just for Homag machines.

“Homag’s machinery range has been developed to shorten throughput times, maximise stock and board usage and

lower production costs.”

Official opening of Combilift’s new €50 Million

global headquarters and manufacturing facility

Forklift manufacturer and material handling

solutions provider Combilift has officially opened its new global headquarters and manufacturing facility in Monaghan, Ireland. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the company also announced that it will be significantly expanding its workforce with the creation of 200 new jobs in the next three years.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Irish Prime Minister An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar TD said: “Combilift is an incredible home-grown Monaghan success story. When the company was founded 20 years ago, it had three employees, a brilliant concept, and the ambition to make it a reality. Combilift is playing a significant role in Monaghan’s success, and I would like to congratulate Robert Moffett

and Martin McVicar and everyone at Combilift on their achievements to date and wish them every success for the future.”

Built at a cost of €50 million, the investment in the new 46,500 sq. m. (500,000 sq. ft) facility will allow Combilift to realise its ambitious growth plans. Martin McVicar, Managing Director said: “We have employed an additional 230 people since we announced

our plans for this factory in 2015 and the combination of this state of the art production plant and the growing skilled workforce will allow us to double production within the next 5 years.”

Combilift currently exports 98% of its products to 85 countries through its 250-strong international dealer network. The current workforce stands at 550 people and the new employment opportunities

will be for skilled technicians, design engineers, logistics and supply chain specialists and those with mechanical and electrical mechatronics skills.

Mass CustomisationMartin McVicar attributes the company’s impressive growth and its status as an acknowledged world leader in the material handling sector to mass customisation. “Combilift has set the benchmark for the mass production of customised innovative products. Mass customisation is the new frontier for both the customer and the manufacturer as customers are increasingly expecting products to be tailored to their requirements. We listen to and take feedback on board from our customers and dealers to identify solutions that best match their individual specific needs.”

Combilift invests 7% of its annual turnover in Research and Development to enhance its customisation capability and to maximise ROI for its customers. “The flexibility in our new facility means that we can continue to accommodate any request for a customised material handling solution. We also see ourselves as much more than a forklift manufacturer and are transforming the transport and logistics sector with our innovative, space-spacing products and our services.”

Combilift offers a free

logistic and warehouse design service which enables customers to see the benefit that its products will bring to their business. “Our engineers proactively design, plan and produce material flow analysis and 3D animations - 150 to 200 per day for our worldwide customers - which clearly illustrate the capacity potential as well as the optimum flow of materials on their site.” said McVicar.

Growth of CombiliftEstablished by Martin McVicar, Managing Director and Robert in Moffett, Technical Director, in 1998, Combilift is a privately held and fully capitalised company.

It developed the world’s first multidirectional all-wheel drive IC engine powered forklift in 1998. In the first year of operation it produced 18 units,17 of which were exported. The company has more than doubled in the last 5 years and now has 40,000 units in operation in over 85 countries.

Combilift’s product portfolio has expanded way beyond its first multidirectional model according to McVicar: “Combilift has always focused on a number of niche market segments and has a proven track record of launching one or two new products annually. In the first 10 years we focussed on the long load material handling sector with

the multidirectional range which revolutionised the handling of long materials, allowing customers to handle long products in less space more safely.”

Between 2008 and 2018 Combilift diversified its product ranged by developing a number of innovative space saving warehouse and heavy load handling products; the Aisle Master articulated truck and the Straddle Carrier (Combi-SC) respectively.

Pedestrian products were introduced into the range in the last five years, enabling Combilift to gain a foothold in this growing market. The Combi-WR, Combi-WR4 and the Combi-CS all incorporate Combilift’s unique patented multi-positional tiller arm technology. “There is a growing demand for pedestrian trucks, driven by safety concerns where customers and/or employees are in the vicinity of operating forklifts,” said McVicar. “It is our intention to significantly expand this range, as can be seen with the launch of the new high lift capacity Combilift Powered Pallet Truck (Combi-HC-PPT).”

New FactoryThe new 46,500 sq. m purpose–built factory is set on a 100-acre site with room for future expansion when required. With 11 acres of roof space, it is one of the largest manufacturing operations under one single roof in the Republic of Ireland.

Incorporating the latest manufacturing processes with a focus on sustainability, the new factory will enable Combilift to double its output in a single shift across all production lines. Four 90 metre moving assembly lines produce a finished truck every 15 minutes. There are 60 welding bays, two plasma cutting machines, three paint

lines which use sustainable water-based paints and three automatic shot blasters to cater for different sized products. 12,000 pallet locations ensure ample storage space for parts and components. The facility also includes a 50-seat cinema training room, 5,000 m² of office space and a dedicated R&D Development and Testing Centre.

23% of roof space is covered in skylights, enabling staff to work in natural daylight without the assistance of artificial lighting. Other lighting is provided through 1100 LED light with individual PIR sensors. Solar panels supply 185 kW of energy with a

1 MW Biomass plant fuelled by recycled wood (pallets etc.) to heat the

spraying booths and assembly area. 110,000 litres of rain water are harvested for jet washing and bathroom facilities.

More than 50 truckloads of finished products are dispatched from the factory each week, and spare parts are shipped across the world to the dealer network.

Certified to international quality and safety

management standards, the new headquarters and manufacturing facility has been awarded ISO 9001 international quality management system, ISO 14001 Environment Management and OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series.Tel: +353(0)47 80500www.combilift.com

Kundig quality for Parabola“Quality is everything”,

said Gary Tuddenham, managing director of Parabola Workshops Ltd, His company, founded in 2013, is a specialist furniture manufacturer, working predominantly with the superyacht industry and residential homes. Based just outside Carlisle and working with designers in London, work comes in through recommendation.

“Our work is bespoke,

one offs: we very rarely do anything twice,” Gary said. “We can be working on a project for up to three to four months on a single item.”

To maintain the high standards of quality, Gary recently invested in a ‘made to measure’ Kündig Uniq-S edge sander.

Gary first saw the Kündig range of sanders at a W exhibition, at Birmingham’s NEC. The team from Parabola took full advantage of the opportunities at the

show to view a wide range of woodworking machinery in action, including Kündig sanders demonstrated by Carl O’Meara of Kündig UK Ltd. Regarding the edge sander, Gary said, “We ummed and ahhed about it: then, after a visit to Carl at his showroom in Burscough, near Preston, we felt that we should definitely get the sander: it made sense.”

The edge sander provides significant production advantages. “We have

machines that sand the faces of panels, but always spent a lot of time by hand sanding the edges. It just does not make sense when there are a lot of drawerboxes and carcasses. The Uniq-S takes the donkey work out of everything: it is efficient.”

Gary chose Kündig “because of the build quality and the reputation. There are a couple of other manufacturers that do a similar machine but it wasn’t quite the same. For the accuracy we were looking at the sander had to be built correctly, with tiny tolerances. It had to be a rigid quality machine.

“It is very convenient. We have the edge sander in the hand workshop rather than the machine workshop. It is there when you need it, right

next to the work benches.” While space was not an issue, Gary added “It is a nice compact machine.”

Gary selected various options, including a grooved

infeed platen to allow the sanding off of veneers that have been over laid after edging; a second transport belt to allow sanding of the ends of narrow panels; a

two speed motor to allow finer grade abrasives to be used; a bobbin attachment allowing internal and external curves to be sanded; and a semi round table allowing the sanding of shapes using the rubber coated drive roller on the machine.

The Kündig Uniq-S handles throughfeed sanding of small or large workpieces thanks to the integrated feed system, and can operate manually or with automatic feeding. With a table size of 1,180 mm x 325 mm, the sander comes with two guide-pulleys for long workpieces. Pressure rollers hold the workpieces against the feed belt. The solid frame construction features heavy cast iron tables. The belt width is 150-200 mm, and the belt length is 2,000 mm. The working level is approximately 830 mm on the sanding side and 900 mm on the side for veneer sanding. The net weight is 490 kg and the floor space required is 1,150 mm x 800 mm.

Asked if he would recommend the Uniq-S edge sander, Gary replied, “Yes, definitely. It does everything we expected it to do.” He added: “Carl is perfect: you can talk to him, no problem, and he will give you good advice.”

AFS biomass proud to announce the launch of the state-of-the-art

SyngaSmart solid biomass CHP plant!

advertorial

After leading the way in the promotion of

biomass heating systems throughout the UK since 2012 AFS Biomass can now proudly present the cutting edge SyngaSmart micro co-generation plants. The fully containerized and modular configuration enables multiple installations to reach the desired power output, from 30 kWe (45 kWth) upwards.

CHP, the generation of both heat and electricity, from biomass has long been researched and developed, with limited success. Finally the patent pending SyngaSmart is available. Manufactured in Italy to exacting standards the SyngaSmart offers an integrated solution for heat and power generation through pyro-gasification, the use of high temperatures in a low oxygen environment to convert biomass into a gas called syngas. This is used to fuel standard internal combustion engines which turn the syngas energy into electric and thermal power.

Ideal for the woodworking industry which inherently suffers from the punitively high cost of electricity to run CNC machines and more, often in poorly insulated factories requiring space and process heating. All solid wood waste can be used, either as wood chip or as briquettes from poorly shredded waste and shavings. So why choose a SyngaSmart:

• Huge, ever increasing savings against current fossil fuel and electricity costs which continue to rise.

• Wood waste disposal savings – create energy from waste rather than pay for its removal.

• Mitigate against future carbon taxes.

• Enhance green credentials – the only emissions and waste are some of the CO₂ consumed by the biomass during growth and a small amount of biochar, a powerful, natural fertilizer.

• Modular – install the best sized plant to match energy needs.

• Safe and silent – the

syngas is generated and aspirated in a negative pressure flow with no storage required, negating any risk of explosions or leaks, with a very low acoustic footprint.

• Fully automated and programmable via the internet or on site through proprietary SCADA interface and software.

• Eligible for the Government RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive) scheme.

The RHI scheme was designed to reward businesses which contribute towards the UK’s carbon reduction targets. Payable for 20 years for all the metered eligible heat generated from biomass, it provides a very welcome additional income stream.

AFS Biomass Ltd are leading the way in the promotion and implementation of all forms of biomass energy generation. A major partner with ETA and Herz, two of the most respected and reliable biomass boiler

manufacturers in the market today, AFS can now offer the unbeatable SyngaSmart solid biomass CHP units. As one of the few Carbon Trust Accredited Suppliers and CPD biomass training houses in the UK, AFS Biomass offers the design, installation and ongoing maintenance to many diverse sectors including furniture & kitchen manufacturers, sawmills, pallet companies and more. References are available on request from a large number of highly satisfied clients.

P & A Fencing & Sheds in

Mold already have 800 kW of ETA biomass boilers providing space heating, water heating and process heating for factory and warehouse buildings, a wood treatment and drying kiln, a garden centre and an office block. As Rhys Hughes, the Operations Director, says, “Investing in biomass was one of the best business decisions we have made at P & A. Not only have we created excellent savings on our old gas and LPG heating costs, we produce enough wood chip from our waste to run our biomass boilers all year round, FREE fuel. We have recently acquired a new site which

will require a large amount of heat. As one of the units in Mold also has a high electrical demand we have decided to re-locate one of the biomass boilers to the new site and install a SyngaSmart CHP unit in its place. That will create even greater fossil fuel savings and increase an already impressive RHI income stream. AFS Biomass were highly professional all the way through the projects to date, from initial advice, to the full design, installation, commissioning and ongoing maintenance of the boiler systems. We have no hesitation at all in employing their services further for the implementation of the biomass CHP plant. I would not hesitate in recommending

AFS Biomass to any business considering converting to biomass.”

Whether looking for a traditional biomass heating system or for the latest state of the art technology in the field of combined heat and power, now is the time to act for maximum benefit. Fossil fuel costs continue to rise, carbon taxes become ever more punitive and the

RHI is, for the time being, extremely attractive. Why not join the ever increasing number of businesses helping themselves and the environment through the adoption of biomass for future energy needs? AFS Biomass are in prime position to help you achieve those goals.Tel: 0161 302 2851E: [email protected]

This has led to a huge increase in production, shorter lead times and a superior quality of end-product which collectively have

of the AXYZ 4008 router has been an entirely different and more satisfying experience and well worth the outlay. The machine has already proved to be the best, the most productive and the most reliable piece of capital equipment we have ever purchased during the fourteen years we have been in business.”

Part of the AXYZ 4000 series, the 4008 router incorporates a seven-station AXYZ Automatic Tool Change (ATC) facility to increase both

the flexibility of the machine and its speed of production. The router, which runs on VECTRIC design and production software, has a standard processing width of 1524mm and an expandable processing length of 2438mm. It is used to process a wide range of materials, including

plywood, MDF, composites such as DIBOND, solid surface materials like Corian and aluminium and plastics. A big part of the production carried out at RC Motorhomes involves interior furniture such as cabinets and shelving, the quality of which had to reflect the high standards already established when traditional hand-held methods of production were employed.

In common with all AXYZ routers, the AXYZ 4008 is available with a host of optional machine tool enhancements. In particular, these include the AXYZ Auto Zone Management facility that ensures the material being processed is always held securely during the routing/cutting cycle and the latest A2MC machine control system that has a massive 16GB of memory for program storage and network connectivity to enable error-free program transfer. Further options include the AXYZ AVS (AXYZ Vision System) for precise material

alignment and the latest helical rack and pinion drive system featuring a multiple gear teeth configuration. This helps spread the workload more evenly, leading to faster throughput speeds, greater accuracy, reduced material wastage, quieter operation and ultimately a longer than normal machine life.

In conclusion, Richard Churchill added: “Purchase of the AXYZ 4008 machine has proved a satisfying and eye-opening experience. We have been particularly impressed by the on-site training provided by AXYZ International and the technical support that was readily given prior to, during and following installation of the router which has operated flawlessly from day one.”

A family joinery firm is celebrating its 50th

year in business thanks to a continued focus on combining traditional skills with modern technology.

At a time when there are fewer joinery firms than ever in the window industry, it has been a particularly special anniversary for Huddersfield based Croxford’s.

The firm was registered in April 1968 by Mr Barrie Croxford, a Joiner and Carpenter. In their early years they carried out contracts including refurbishments of local pubs for brewers Tetley and Bass Charrington as well as working at local hospitals, textile mills and private houses. But that changed about 35 years ago when Barrie Croxford and his son Ralph attended trade fairs in Germany and realised how technology was leaving the traditional UK woodworking industry behind.

Ralph Croxford, who joined the family business when he left school in 1980, now heads the company. He believes that the heart of Croxford’s success lies in its ability to produce modern high quality joinery items combined with traditional craftsmanship skills.

Business discovers the nuts and bolts of saving money

on its heating billsA Redditch company

that distributes nuts and bolts has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on heating bills.

In2Components Limited was founded in 1999 by Paul Caswell and Richard O’Hare to source and supply local businesses with fastener requirements.

Having moved premises in August 2017 to a building with no heating, the business found itself relying on portable electric heaters to warm the factory when the weather turned really cold. Consequently, when Director Paul Caswell saw the resulting electricity bill, he decided to find out more about a wood waste heater that he’d seen at a client premises, and was recommended to speak to Wood Waste Technology.

Paul says: “Investing in a wood waste heater seemed an obvious solution to help us dispose of some of the broken pallets and other burnable waste whilst providing us with free heating to keep our 7 employees warm. Although we don’t generate much wood waste internally, we calculated that we’d still save money on our heating bills even if we ended up buying in some wood to

burn!” Following a site survey

and review, a WT5 heater was purchased and installed earlier this year by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers.

Paul continues: “We need not have worried about not having much of our own wood to burn, as word soon got round about our new wood waste heater, and we’ve now got lots of other local businesses giving us their waste wood. It’s inevitable that some of the companies will end up purchasing their own wood waste heater though, as lots of them have already taken photos of it and asked us for contact details for Wood Waste Technology as it’s such a good investment, and is a great product.”

Kurt Cockroft, MD at Wood Waste Technology says: “Although most of our customers generate their own wood waste to burn, it’s great to hear that our heaters are still appealing to other businesses in industries that don’t predominantly deal in wood manufacturing. Most of our sales come through referrals from other businesses, so we’re extremely thankful to In2Components and all our other clients who voluntarily recommend us to their

contacts.”Wood Waste Technology’s

years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers.

In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of

dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems - a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use, and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs.

For more information on how you can save or make money by using your wood waste, just call 01785 250400 or visit www.woodwastetechnology.com, www.grossuk.co.uk or www.putzmaus.co.uk.

He says, “my Dad used to teach me the old-fashioned ways and skills, but we both realised that modern machines and technology had a large part to play. With my Mother coming from Germany Dad was inspired by the idea of an inward opening window like the tilt and turn, so back in the early 60’s, he made his first timber tilt and turn window, well before any other company in the UK”.

Croxford’s have always strived to be one step ahead of its competitors. For nearly 40 years Croxfords have been making the now popular bi-folding and lift & sliding patio doors. In addition to the above mentioned items the company with its small dedicated workforce specialise in high quality, one-off projects with a particular focus on new build and the renovation market. They offer various window designs

including tilt and turn, flush and stormproof casement and sliding sash. To complement its window products the company also manufactures external and internal doors and staircases including woodturning components.

With the recent trend away from stained finishes towards traditional heritage painted colours, most of their products are supplied fully factory finished, i.e ready glazed with a spray applied paint finish in almost any colour. Apart from the more commonly used certified soft- and hardwood timbers, Croxford’s also offer the modified timber ‘Accoya’.

Over the last 50 years they have supplied the joinery work for some prestigious projects all over the UK, and their work has featured on the TV show ‘Grand Designs’.Tel: 01484 850892www.croxfords.co.uk
