Materials: Properties and IS coding of various materials, Selection of material from properties and economic aspects. UNIT 2. Design for Strength: Allowable stresses, detailed discussion on factor of safety (factor of ignorance), Stress concentration- causes, Introduction of various design considerations like strength, stiffness, weight cost, space etc., Concept of fatigue failures. UNIT 3. Mechanical Joints: Riveted Joints, Design of various types of welding joints under different static load conditions. Bolted joints in tension, Eccentrically loaded riveted, welded and bolted joints, Design of cotter and knuckle joints. Design of power screws and screw jack UNIT 4. Springs: Design of helical springs, Design of leaf springs, Surging phenomenon in springs UNIT 5. Cylinders: Design of thin and thick cylinders UNIT 6. Keys and Couplings: Design of Keys – Flat, Kennedy Keys, Splines, Couplings design – Rigid & Flexible coupling. UNIT 7.
