These events are not out of the question. As we have seen on the news in recent years, bad things happen to good communities. Fort MacMurry is a great example. We dont need to live in fear over these possible events, but we do need to be ready for the possibility of one coming here. I look at it this way. First, you should have about 72 hours of food, water and supplies for you and your family stored at home somewhere you can access it all quickly and in a container that you can move if necessary. Some cash, change, extra keys, important family documents, a can opener are all recommended. There are lots of lists out there to help you get started on your kit. The Canadian Red Cross is a great place to find advice for emergency kits. And you dont need to build your emergency kit in one day. Start by putting one together from what you already have. Mayor’s Message

We are well into the first part of the year and now is a good time to make some changes and get ready for

the year ahead. I hope the year started off well for you and you are looking forward to a great February and

March. I know that I am.

In early January, the members of Machin’s Emergency Response Unit met and did some training regarding

how we as a municipality would respond to an emergency such as a forest fire approaching our community

or a major flu or sickness outbreak that would render a large proportion of our community members deathly

ill. By going through the different scenarios and considering possible, problems, solutions, resources and

responsibilities, Machin will be more ready to deal with any problem that were to rise from some adverse

event.

These events are not out of the question. As we have seen on the news in recent years, bad things happen

to good communities. Fort MacMurry is a great example. We don’t need to live in fear over these possible

events, but we do need to be ready for the possibility of one coming here. I look at it this way. When I go

fishing, I don’t expect any problems other than bugs and possibly a sunburn- but I still pack life jackets and

a first-aid kit.

During our meetings and training sessions on this issue, it was clear that in order to keep everyone safe and

sound during major event, each household should do a bit of planning before and if a major event were to

hit us.

First, you should have about 72 hours of food, water and supplies for you and your family stored at home

somewhere you can access it all quickly and in a container that you can move if necessary. Some cash,

change, extra keys, important family documents, a can opener are all recommended. There are lots of lists

out there to help you get started on your kit. The Canadian Red Cross is a great place to find advice for

emergency kits. And you don’t need to build your emergency kit in one day. Start by putting one together

from what you already have. A few cans here and there, a flashlight that is on sale next month, bandages

the month after. Once you have put a good kit together, then you can simply replace and use the food or

items that are getting older and need replacing.

It’s also a good idea to have a plan for an emergency. Where will you go if you have to evacuate the area?

What will you do with your pets? Planning in advance will help you act wisely if you are ever are in an emer-

gency situation and gives you some piece of mind now.

You should also think about your daily and weekly habits. Do you keep your vehicle in good shape? Do you

keep it basically filled up? Having at least a half tank of gas is a great way to be ready to move if necessary.

Gas stations generally run out of fuel quickly when you most need gas.

Do you have a copy of your important prescriptions ready at hand? And do you have a few days’ supply

should you be housebound for a while?

There are other things you can do to be ready for a situation that calls for serious community and individual

action and each household and individual will need to have a customized plan and supplies. The important

thing is that you think about what you need to do, and then do it. The time to get ready for and emergency

is right now, before the problem lands on our doorstep.

Being ready is not only good for you and your family, it is good for your neighbours and most importantly,

the most vulnerable around us. By being able to look after yourself for at Continued on page 2

least a short time, you free up emergency per-

solving the primary problem. By not being a

problem yourself, you directly help others.

Well, that’s about it for now. Let’s all hope the

doesn’t.

Attention Machin Tax payers. 2018 Interim Tax Bills were mailed out January 24, 2018. The In-terim Tax Bills are due February 28, 2018. If you have not received your tax bill please contact the Municipal Office at (807)227-2633. Failure to re-ceive tax notice does not relieve the taxpayer from payment of taxes nor from liability or penal-ty for late payment.

Dog Tags are due March 31, 2018 at the cost of $10.00 a tag. We have been receiving several complaints of dogs wandering the streets and using people’s yards as their personal washroom, as well as causing other problems running around loose. We would like to remind the dog owners that un-der by-law #38-2011 dogs must be on a leash when out of their yards, as well as in the care and control of their owner.

Property Owners in Vermilion Bay with Aqua Flow

units are reminded to turn them on to prevent

your water from freezing. Please ensure that

they remain on until the middle of April. Should

Shoveling Safety Tips While snow shoveling is good exercise, it can cause heart attacks and injuries when done without proper precautions. Shoveling combined with cold weather places a sudden demand on an individual’s heart and body. To help prevent this, like any other exercise, before beginning it is recommended to warm-up for five-to-ten minutes to get the joints moving and increase blood circulation. After warm-up, perform gentle stretches for the back, arms, shoulders and legs. To prevent injuries, dress properly for the weather and

remember that the extremities will get cold easier and faster. Cover nose/mouth to avoid breathing cold air and dress in several layers; remove a layer as/if needed and wear boots with slip-resistant soles or anti-slip cleat attachments. Also remember to drink plenty of water; dehydration is an issue in winter just as it is in summer.

Blanket Drive In our constant response to various kinds of emergencies, the Machin Fire Department uses blankets in providing care for patients. We are in need of more blankets and are reaching out to the community for do-nations. If you have blankets that are clean and in good condition, which you wish to donate, they can be dropped off at the municipal office during their business hours, Monday – Friday 8-4. Thank you for sup-porting your fire department and helping others in our community.

The Highly Sensitive Person by Elaine N. Aron, PHD. – How to thrive when the world overwhelms you.

Book Club meetings w ill be one and a half hours approximately, once a week for 4 weeks. Books w ill be provided and are yours to keep. Meetings will be relaxed, interactive and confidential; we will discuss the book and our thoughts on what we’ve dis-covered.

Are you a highly sensitive person? Do you have a keen imagination and vivid dreams? Is time alone each day as essential to you as food and wa-ter? Are you "too shy" or "too sensitive" according to others? Do noise and confusion quickly overwhelm you? If

your answers are yes, you may be a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP). Most of us feel overstimulated every once in a while, but for the Highly Sensitive Person, it's a way of life. In this

groundbreaking book, Dr. Elaine Aron, a psychotherapist, workshop leader and highly sensitive person herself, shows you how to identify this trait in yourself and make the most of it in everyday situations. Drawing on her many years of research and hundreds of interviews, she shows how you can better understand yourself and

your trait to create a fuller, richer life. In The Highly Sensitive Person, you will discover: * Self-assessment tests to help you identify your particular sensitivities * Ways to reframe your past experiences in a positive light and gain greater self-esteem in the process * Insight into how high sensitivity affects both work and personal relationships * Tips on how to deal with over arousal * Information’s on medications and when to seek help * Techniques to enrich the soul and spirit Sessions are scheduled to run Thursdays from March 8th, 2018 through March 29th, 2018 at 1:30 pm in the downstairs boardroom of the clinic.

You do not need to be a patient of the clinic to enroll. There are only 5 seats available for this program. Program will repeat if required.

To register or for more information, please call the clinic or Brenda at 227-2675. Individual counseling is also available.

Lions District 5M10 Mid-Winter Convention 2018

COME TOGETHER UNDER THE NORTHERN

LIGHTS - January 19, 20 & 21, 2018

The Lions District 5M10 Mid-Winter Convention 2018 was held in Dryden at the Best Western Plus Hotel and Conference Centre on January 19, 20 & 21. The con-vention hosted by the Dryden, Dryden Trillium and Ver-milion Bay Lions Clubs, saw 165 Lions and their guests from across Northwestern Ontario and Northeastern Minnesota come together “under the northern lights” for a weekend of fun and learning. Guest speakers Eu-gene Chong from the CNIB Lake Joseph Centre and Thomas A. Spizzo from Spring Point Project along with several workshops, highlighted the five pillars of Lion-ism: Vision, Diabetes, Environment, Hunger and Child-hood Cancer.

Special guests included Lions International Director Nic-olin Moore, from Trinidad Tobago, and District Governor Mark Eyre, from Cook, Minnesota, who celebrated the accomplishments of Lions and emphasized the need for Lions to continue their work in supporting Lion’s initia-tives, locally, nationally and internationally. Lions were very pleased to have Lion Shirley Koroniak from the Vermilion Bay Lions elected as 2nd Vice District Gover-nor. Congratulations Shirley!

Local Lions were happy to show off our beautiful area and 25 Lions including ID Nicolin Moore and her hus-band Rudy, took part in dog sledding on Friday morning at the Borealis Dog Sledding Adventures with Burton Penner. Dog sledding was a huge hit and an experience of a lifetime for the Moore’s.

The Dryden, Dryden Trillium and Vermilion Bay Lions extend a huge thank you to local businesses and indi-viduals who supported our convention and to the Best Western for being an exceptional venue. The conven-tion was a huge success and visitors to our community were very impressed with all our area has to offer.
