As we all know, it takes the whole hospital to care forour patients and we appreciate all the ancillary departments involved, also. Most of all, we

Our Medical Staff’s tenacious commitment to thewell being of our patients often extends far beyondthe walls of our facilities.

That same altruistic spirit shows up time and again in community causes and events throughout theregion.

A shining example of a physician whose compassionand kind-hearted generosity ripples through hiscommunity is Dr. Dana O. Olson, DiagnosticRadiologist at PCH.

Dr. Olson works tirelessly to help preserve theenvironment and the quality of life in his belovedMonroe County, West Virginia.

On April 19, 2016, Dr. Olson, along with a group ofother Monroe County residents, participated in astream monitoring and certification workshopconducted by the West Virginia Department ofEnvironmental Protection as part of the WV SaveOur Streams initiative.

The mission of WV Save Our Streams is to promotethe preservation and restoration of our state’s watersby providing an understanding of their ecologicalintegrity. This mission is accomplished byconducting workshops that train volunteers on howto monitor their local wadeable streams and rivers.

The program uses a biosurvey approach to streamstudy, which includes the collection and evaluation ofbenthic macro-invertebrates – also known as“benthos,” they are small animals living amongstones, logs, sediments and aquatic plants on thebottom of streams, rivers, and lakes. They are largeenough to see with the naked eye (macro) and haveno backbone (invertebrate) – and an assessment ofthe stream’s physiochemical conditions. A streambioscore is determined by calculating three to sixmetrics that are used to determine an integrity rating.

Hans Creek near Lindside was the waterwaymonitored by the group. The stream was in excellentcondition and Monroe County residents hope topreserve that quality for future generations.
