Welcome back everyone and welcome to the fifth edition of our company newsletter. I hope thateverything is well with you and your families.

The new year has started with a bang with recruitment of new staff going strong and new potentialprojects happening around the country in various places. Wellington has just completed anotherbulk steel load out and the Bay of Plenty yards are all contributing to the Transpower Projectamongst others.

The recent earthquake in Christchurch has been a shock to us all and our sympathy is withanyone who has lost friends or family in the disaster. We have made a donation as a company tothe Red Cross to support their work in the region and you can read more about that later in thenewsletter. We also offered our assistance in the form of two operators to help in the recovery

operations. This serves as a good reminder going forward to make sure you are prepared athome, have all the necessary items in your emergency kits and to keep them updated. Areminder check-list is posted later in the newsletter. We also want those of you who are competentstaff to keep in the back of your mind that if we experience an emergency in our own home towns, that once you have looked after your own families and ensured their safety, that we would like youto come back and help the rescue services with our machinery. We have emergency kits in eachyard and because we have a multi yard set-up, we have a better chance to return to business asusual in a short period of time.

I look forward to what is shaping up to be a promising year in 2011 and hope to be able to catchup with you all at some point with my visits during the year.

    ~Jeff

dhousands of old coins, notes and foreign currency have been donated for the Heads Up for KidsProject. The money will go to education programmes and to outdoor projects such as Sir EdmundHillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre, Duke of Edinburgh Awards, Spirit of Adventure, and OutwardBound.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand head of currency Alan Boaden estimates there is more than$116 million in pennies, shillings and pounds, old decimal coins and banknotes sitting around in

drawers or cupboards in households throughout New Zealand. Now Lions Clubs New Zealand iscalling for all that old currency to be given to help its work supporting youth programmes.

Mr Boaden said the Reserve Bank had kept note of how much currency it had issued and howmuch it received back to get the $116m figure made up from $80 million in unreturned old notesand an estimated $36m in old coins sitting idle around New Zealand. New Zealand had $4 billionin currency circulating, $300m of that in coins. Old 5c coins would be the most common sittingaround homes 500 million of them were issued between the introduction of decimal currency1967 and the removal of the coins in 2006, Mr Boaden said.

A 249-YEAR-OLD French franc is just one of thousands of old coins that have been discoveredand handed over in the name of charity. The 1752 French franc was discovered by a lady who

was clearing out a deceased family member's Ellerslie home. "Going through it they came acrossa number of coins, including the French franc and they just heard about us, called us up and said:`Come and get it'," Remuera Lion Richard Simmons says. "It's the oldest coin we've gotthroughout the country."

Old or collectible notes and coins are being sold to coin collectors. The French franc is estimatedat around $40.

Old copper has headed to a furnace in Christchurchwhere it is melted and sold. The used old coins thebank collected would be sold to South Korea forscrap metal.

Macaulay Metals has acted as a broker for the saleof the coins to various locations.

Below are photos of the copper coins prior to be putinto the furnace in Christchurch.

Do you have or know of a kid aged 12-18 who wouldbenefit from an outdoor adventure experience? Seescholarship details at the end of this newsletter!

Scientists said they were moving closer to coming up with a non-physical definition of the kilo after

discovering the metal artifact used as the international standard had shed a little weight.Researchers caution there is still some way to go before their mission is complete, but ifsuccessful it would lead to the end of the useful life of the last manufactured object on whichfundamental units of measure depend.

At the moment, the international standard for the kilo -- the equivalent of around 2.2 pounds -- is achunk of metal, under triple lock-and-key in France since 1889.

But scientists became concerned about the cylinder of platinum and iridium housed at theInternational Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) in Sevres, near Paris, after discovering ithad mysteriously lost a tiny amount of weight.

Experts at the institute revealed in 2007 that the metal chunk is 50 micrograms -- 0.0000017ounces -- lighter than the average of several dozen copies, meaning it had lost the equivalent of asmall grain of sand.

They are now searching for a non-physical way of defining the kilo, which would bring it in line withthe six other base units that make up the International System of Units (SI).

    New Systems for tracking payments to third party freight suppliers;

    1. In bound freight we can deduct a freight rate from a metal suppliers ticket and either re-

charge it to a third party trucking company using a scale ticket or we can deduct a freightrate and retain that as a freight charge

    2. Out bound freight we can mark a packing slip as having been carted by a third partytrucking company and we can then have an inquiry to match off and check when theyinvoice us at the end of the month. Saves double payments and incorrect weights on theirinvoice.

On line inquiry system more active

Suppliers, with the provided log in can now log in and get their current price list off our website andcan get any payments details direct from the system.

Tim is working over next few months to get even more suppliers on board.

The following is a brief description of the Granulator, this is broken down into sections with adescription of how each component works. This is to help you understand this machine and whywe ask for cable to be processed in a certain way.

    Rough Chopper

This is the first part of the granulating process. You take thecable that has been cut into lengths of

300mm to 500mm or 30cm to 50cm and throw it into the hopperwhich in turn goes through the throat and into a large spinningblade which shreds and tears the cable into smaller pieces. (Ifthe cable is smaller than the required length it requires a lotmore handling to load the hopper and there is a good chance ofit bouncing off the spinning blade and flying out of the machine, becoming a missile).

Once the blades have shredded the cable and if the pieces aresmall enough they pass through a screen, (depending on whatsize screen we are running at the time) if not it goes around

again to be shredded again, and this process keeps happeninguntil it does go through the screen as it is the only way out.

After the rough chopper the shredded cable falls on to aconveyor belt which passes under a magnet , If there is any steelmixed in this will separate it out. Note that steel armoured cableis OK for granulating. From there it goes on to another conveyorbelt and into a hopper.

    Hopper

This hopper is used to store the shredded cable in bulk so that

an even flow of material is assured for the next stage of theprocess. Inside the hopper there is a stirrer at the bottom, thiskeeps turning the material around and mixing it up so that thereis an even mix of plastic and ali or copper, whichever cable isbeing run at the time (the plastic acts as a lubricant).

A screw pump at the bottom of the hopper helps to ensure aneven flow of material on to yet another conveyor belt whichpasses under another magnet to ensure any remaining steelhas been taken out. From there it travels up and into the finechopper.

    Fine Chopper

The fine chopper spins at a high speed and has delicate blades, the purpose of this is to cut the already shredded cable into yetsmaller pieces again. The cable drops onto these blades and iscut and spun around until it is small enough to pass through ascreen which also is the only way out. Brass and steel at thisstage of the operation will do serious harm to the blades as theyhave a fine point on them, most of the steel will have been takenout by the magnets on the way to this stage but any brass willdestroy the blades.

After this part the product goes into a small hopper and into anotherscrew pump which takes it above the vibrating table and drops it on.

  • 8/7/2019 Macaulay Metals - Issue 5

    6/10

    Vibrating Table

The vibrating table is tilted slightly with a blower pushing airfrom the bottom and a extraction fan sucking from the top. What happens during this process is the separation of theproduct being it either copper or Ali. The product is bouncedacross the table to the top and the plastic is bounced to the

bottom, Any dust and fine plastic is sucked out through theextraction fan. Fine wire does not separate from the plastic toowell therefore we tend to loose a lot of product.

Once separated the product is dropped onto another conveyorbelt and put into 44 gallon drums, plastic is put into bulk bagsfor disposal.

    Some General Rules:

    - 300mm to 500mm lengths for the heavy to medium cable.- 45/55 % is ok in long lengths, i.e, TPS as it is soft enough to go through the rough chopper.- Clean product and sort it well as the Granulator does not separate copper from Ali, it only

separates plastic.- Steel armoured cable is OK as there are 3 magnets.- Lead armoured is not OK

All our thoughts go out to everyone affected by the earthquake in Christchurch on the 22ndFebruary. A lot of employees have had friends and family who were in the city at the time and asfar as we are aware all are safe and well.

Macaulay Metals provided a donation to the Red Cross to support the rescue and recovery effortand we were pleasantly surprised to not only receive a prompt receipt, but a personally writtenmessage from the Fundraising Manager of the Red Cross, she wrote the below (also on ourfacebook page):

I just wanted to add a note to highlight how grateful we are for your donation. It really will make adifference to those affected by the Christchurch earthquake. Kind regards, Alice Montague -Fundraising Manager.

In our December 2010 issue we reminded everyone of the rules and importance of wearing hardhats. We have now had two examples in the group where a hard hat prevented injury, and wherenot worn has caused greater injury:

A driver was hit by scrap metal falling from a grab in the steel yard. The scrap knocked thehard hat off the person. He received a minor cut on the head, but the hard hat preventedhim from any further damage.

A driver was hit on the head by scrap falling from his hiab, theimpact knocked him out and caused a contusion that requiredstitches. He was not wearing a hard hat.

Hard Hats are compulsory in our Steel Yards. They must also be worn byemployees when operating truck mounted cranes or any overhead liftingequipment.
