Author Unknown

Last month we published a poem, author

unknown and just last week I had an email that

solved the puzzle. I heard from Chris Long who

hails from Cairns in sunny Queensland. Some

years ago the poem was borrowed and ultimately

went viral around the country.

Chris said, in part “By no means did I ever

consider it my best poem but it has captured the

imagination with its blunt message.” Chris Long

has a book of bush poetry and anyone wanting to

read more of his poems can follow the following

link. www.chrislongbushpoetry.com

Chris has kindly given us permission to

publish more of his poems which we will do from

time to time.

How did he find us? From time to time Chris

googles the first line of the poem and up pops a

list of all the times it has appeared on the web.

Because the Macarthur News goes onto the

Macarthur website he was able to see it in our

AN INTERESTING FACT.

After needing 13litre’s of blood for a surgery at the age of 13,

a man named James Harrison pledged to donate blood once he

turned 18. It was discovered that his blood contained a rare

antigen which cured Rhesus disease. He has donated blood a

record 1,000 times and saved 2,000,000 lives.

News from Mount Eccles

Rob Stewart-Murray the Moyne Shires En-

gineering officer attended the recent Budj Bim

council meeting held at Mount Eccles. Rob

has the responsibility for managing road sign-

age in the shire. I had asked Rob to attend the

meeting to give a presentation about the pre-

sent situation with signs that indicate the way

to Mount Eccles and what is planned in re-

gards to upgrading them and or installing

more to better lead people to the park. Rob

gave a comprehensive presentation to the Budj

Bim council and we can look forward to the

replacement of some of the signage in the not

too distant future.

From the start of July the booking of camp-

sites at Mount Eccles will go on line.

The current system of ringing up the Eccles

office to book a campsite during the holiday

periods will not be an option. Booking a site

will apply for the entire year. There will soon

be appropriate signage installed at the park

and there is also some advertising etc planned

to alert the public to these changes not only at

Eccles but at other Parks in Victoria.

Booking a campsite will be at

www.parks.vic.gov.au/stay or people can ring

131963. The minister will soon make an

announcement in regards to camp fee charges

to stay at various Parks throughout Victoria.

Badminton

Badminton is played on Tuesday night at the

Macarthur Mechanics Institute Hall starting with the

young people at 5.30 and running till 6.30 and

averaging 4-8 players. A structured format is in place

for the junior players.

The seniors start at 7pm and their session is also

structured – for fun. All abilities are catered for and

Brendan Gay would love to see more participants of

all ages but particularly seniors. Want to have a

grudge match? Bring a friend and this can be

arranged.

All equipment is supplied, players only need their

own sneakers.

If your child does not want to play a team sport but

would like to learn to play a sport in a non-threatening

environment this could be the answer. Take them

along and let them try it out.

Adults who find it hard to commit to a weekend

sport might also enjoy the exercise in a fun environ-

ment. You won’t know till you try, so why not give it

a go!

LIONS CLUB NEWS

Macarthur and District Lions Club members have had many

opportunities to be active within our local community over

the past few months.

Some recent activities have been catering at the Macarthur

Campdraft, catering for Macarthur School at sports day in

Hamilton and running their “Coins for Kids” activity, host-

ing Challenge Cancer Children’s visit, being represented at

Macarthur’s Anzac Day service as well as BBQ’ing at the

Macarthur Auction. Two “Youth of the Year” finals were

also conducted with secondary school students visiting

from neighbouring areas.

Our annual Change-over dinner in July will be catered for

by the Macarthur Primary School Parent’s Club and new

President, Tony McNamara will be installed that night.

After last years successful Market Day we are planning a

second one, Sunday September 28th has been the date

chosen. Stalls will again be $10 each and already interest

has been shown, with some already booked.

Please keep Friday night, October 17th free and support our

Annual Community Tea. The ‘Kirkstall Jammers’ to enter-

tain on the night. This, as always, is a cheap family night

out and all funds raised are used to support needs within our

community and/or further afield.

If more information is needed about our local Lions club or

any activities contact President Christine, 55761217 or

Secretary Lesley, 55761226.

The Ocean

Deep within the ocean an

Enchanting mystery waits for me

As I surrender to its power

The sea reveals everything I feel

Everything I can be

When I’m troubled

The waves roll in wild and furious

Crash hard upon the sand

When I’m peaceful

The waves ripple gently

Hardly make a sound

When I’m in love with you

The colours of the ocean

Melt to the sky and make it feel true

When I travel to faraway lands

The ocean reminds me of who I am

The low tide reveals how life has changed

The high tied how its stays the same

The turbulent waters of the sea

Hold all my feeling

All my memories

The ocean is more loyal than any friend

More constant than any man
