The following article is being reprinted as we believe
some people missed it last month. There is still time
to register your interest. Macarthur clubs and other
organizations are encouraged to participate.
Group Energy Deals
Around Australia local communities are banding
together to broker a discounted price for electricity
and gas. The MADA committee felt that it was an
issue worth exploring and the obvious energy sup-
plier to talk to was AGL because of their involve-
ment in the Macarthur Wind Farm project.
An initial approach has been made to AGL and
their Retail Division has been asked to consider the
proposal. We may not have a definite answer for
some time but we would like you to consider whether
you would be interested in being part of this initiative
if AGL decide to come on board.
At this stage we can offer no detail as to the likely
price we may be offered or whether we would have to
agree to a fixed term but would expect it to be a better
deal than any of us have with our current energy sup-
plier. We also do not know if businesses will be able
to take up the offer.
At the back of this publication you will find a slip
on which you can register your interest. Any one liv-
ing within the distribution are of the Macarthur News
is able to register their interest. We would like to hear
from businesses as well as individuals so that we have
your information to hand if AGL indicate that they
will provide the same offer to businesses. Dairy farm-
ers who have separate meters for their house and dairy
should register both as we may be able to offer a dis-
count on your household electricity at the very least.
We will provide more information as soon as it
becomes available but it is important that we have an
indication of the number of people interested in this
proposal to enable us to take this to the next level.
Please fill in the form and drop it in the box pro-
vided at the Post Office as soon as possible.
AGL are very keen to be “good neighbours” and
we are hopeful they will come on board and partner
the community in this way which will benefit both
AGL and the community of Macarthur.

News from Mount Eccles
This is my first year being involved in the koala management program at Mt Eccles. As the operations officer overseeing the day to day coordination of the program I have found myself on a steep learning curve. But I am pleased to report that the program went well and I was able to make sure we took a safe approach to catching, sterilising and releasing the koalas. I must admit to a sense of amazement at the way the tree climbers get up tall trees and encourage the koala to go down the tree to a point where the ground crews can extend their poles and push the koala down to where it can be caught, and as we say “in the bag” for transport to the vet station set up nearby.
The program actually began in the late 1990s when an initial census found koala numbers had increased to such a degree the koalas and Manna gum woodlands they rely on were not sustain-able. The program used sterilisation and a relocation program to help relieve the pressure. In 2004 we began a much less invasive or stressful birth control program using contraceptive im-plants and since then just over 4,000 female koalas have been treated.
Over the years koala numbers have reduced from 11,000 to 4,000 and we will continue the program until there is a balance between a sustainable koala population and a healthy Manna gum woodland. The annual treatment program runs for six weeks each spring and employs a Vet, professional tree climbers and a casual catching crew. We treated 160 koalas this year and caught quite a few that had been treated in previous years.
To help monitor the progress and effectiveness of the program there is an annual koala census and a tree condition assessment every two years. We are also undertaking some modelling work to determine the sustainable size of the Koala population in relation to tree condition.
Despite some inclement weather, I really enjoyed spending some days out with the crew catching koalas.
Finally, a big thanks to Craig Millard at Homerton who gave us permission to access the western section of the park through his property, so we could set up our vet station next to his shearing shed.
Gary Bellesini, Parks Victoria
