Maasai Tribal Visit -...

MAASAI TRIBAL VISIT Most itineraries will consist of a visit to a local Maasai tribe in the community. Depending on what our schedule is, we will stop along the route. The local Maaai are a nomadic tribe within Tanzania and Kenya. They can be seen on the plains of the Serengeti in their distinctive dress and customs. Their official language is Maa, but all of them speak Swahili and many speak English.. Their culture must be embraced as many have tried to get them to come into the 21 st century, but the Maasai are a happy tribe living as they do. The Maasai will welcome visits to their village for you to experience their culture, their traditions and their lifestyle. Vehicles pay a fee to enter, once there you are allowed to take as many photos as you like of anything. If, in doubt, always ask the Chief or the person who brought you into the village. They may place a necklace around your neck, they may put a shuka (the red blanket) around you, but these are not free, and as you walk out, they will ask you to pay for them or return them. If you’d like to purchase it, negotiate a price for it. Everything is negotiable. The Maasai are an enterprising tribe and they understand money. They will start with a very high price, never pay this price. While you are helping their community, please be aware of or inquire about prices before you pay. For instance, they may want $40 for the shuka, but there will be many places you can purchase a shuka for at a far less price. However, it may not be the specific pattern, so if you like it, and you don’t mind paying what they ask, then buy it, because we won’t be going around to each store trying to find the patter than you liked at the Maasai village. And that goes for jewelry or anything elee, if you like it, and you don’t mind the price, then buy it.
