WHY this project?
• The role of sport in society has been debated for many decades
• Sport is a part of society as both an educational fixture and an entertainment enterprise Sport forms part of human and social development It can contribute to social cohesion, tolerance and integration It is an effective channel for physical and socio-economic
development As a universal language, sport can be a powerful medium for social
and economic change It can be utilized to bridge cultural gaps, resolve conflict and educate
people in ways that very few other activities can

WHY this project?
• "Traditional Sports and Games (TSG) are part of Intangible Heritage and a symbol of the cultural diversity of our societies" (UNESCO, 1989) The preservation and promotion of TSG is a fundamental
contribution for the valorisation of such an important and essential field for the Intangible Cultural Heritage They have constituted added value in terms of cultural comprehension
and mutual tolerance both within the community of nations and between them, and therefore contribute to the edification of a culture of Peace Most of the TSG, themselves expressions of indigenous cultures and ways
of life contributing to the common identity of humanity, have already disappeared and those that survive are under threat of imminent disappearance and extinction under the combined effect of globalization and harmonization of the rich diversity of world Sports Heritage

WHY this project?
• Only Europe, there are over 3000 Traditional Sports and Games (TSG)
• Despite their social and cultural background, TSG are nowadays under threat. Many Traditional Sports and Games are already lost or in danger of disappearing Globalization by a few sports
Increased tendency towards individualised physical exercise
Transformation into very codified and regulated sports, becoming professional spectacles in several cases

WHAT is RePlay?
• RePlay is a €2million research project funded by the EU Framework Programme 7 (FP7)
• The project is supervised by the Creativity Unit, Luxembourg
• The project started on the 1st of March 2013 and will last for 36 months (until the end of February 2016)

WHAT should be achieved?
• Design and implementation of a platform for the capture, annotation, indexing and provision of 3D sports content

WHAT should be achieved?
• Design and implementation of a platform for the capture, annotation, indexing and provision of 3D sports content Motion capture module to capture the performance skills of a user,
synchronization and 3D skeleton extraction, both from the Microsoft Kinect(s) and WIMUs
Processing and comparing module to extract the main features of the performance of the user; segments a skill; and compares the performance of the user with that from a National/Local Hero
Rendering and visualization module for the 3D reconstruction of the appearance of the users as well as the reconstruction of the environment where the avatars will be placed

• RePlay will concentrate on the following typologies for the classification of Traditional Games and Sports (TSG) in Europe developed by the European Traditional Sports and Games Association
Ball games, where there is an interaction between the players by
means of a malleable ball. In this case, there are no instruments • With the hands or with the upper limbs (e.g. Basque Pelota)
• With the hands and the feet (e.g. Gaelic Football)
Ball games with instruments • Stick/Bat (e.g. Shinty, Hurling, Camogie)
• Basket (e.g. Cesta Punta)
