Dissertation (AR6107)

The dissertation forms a central part of the programme and consists of individual research presented as a project (max 15,000 words). The dissertation topic should be explicitly focused on issues informed by a landscape approach in archaeology and clearly positioned within the theoretical framework of landscape studies. Paramount to the successful completion of your dissertation is a well-defined topic as well as a realistic time plan for the work.

The Programme Director will initially meet you individually, to discuss your general research interest areas. You will be assigned a supervisor before the end of Week 6. Your supervisor will be your main contact person during the programme in relation to your dissertation work. A series of workshops focusing on various aspects of the dissertation will also actively assist you in your work.

A critical document in your dissertation work is the Research Design, where you outline various aspects of the research that you plan to undertake. In Semester 1 you will be asked to prepare brief draft Research Designs for two dissertation topics. At the end of Semester 1 you will make a presentation of these two topics to the class and staff. Based on this presentation and your draft Research Designs you will be assigned - by the Programme Committee - one of the presented topics for your dissertation. You will then be asked to submit a complete Research Design in the early part of Semester 2.

In addition to the individual deadlines and dates decided together with your supervisor there are some important dates to keep in mind regarding your dissertation work.

5th December - Draft Research Designs presentation (15 min) Presentation of two dissertation topics outlining their theoretical base, main research questions, methodology and focus of analysis.

20th February – Submission of Research Design On or before 20th February you should submit a Research Design for your dissertation. This forms a critically important part of your dissertation work and should be prepared under the guidance of your supervisor. It is to be submitted in hard copy and in digital form to Programme Director Stefan Bergh.

17th April - Timetable for dissertation work.

On or before 17th April you should submit a timetable for your work with your dissertation. This should show a weekly schedule with deadlines for various aspects of your work indicated. The timetable should be worked out together with your supervisor, and submitted in hard copy and digital form to Programme Director Stefan Bergh.

30th June - Technical surveys - deadline All technical surveys must be completed before June 30th.

28th July - Submission of full dissertation draft A complete unbound draft of your dissertation must be submitted to Programme Director Stefan Bergh.

Page 10: MA in Landscape Archaeology - NUI Galway · The MA in Landscape Archaeology consists of 7 taught modules and surveying workshops. Six modules focus on various aspects of Landscape

9

NOTE! Students who do not submit complete draft on or before this date, may not be able to progress towards a final submission of their dissertation.

28th July - PowerPoint presentation On Tuesday 28th July you shall give a 15 minute presentation of your dissertation work to class and staff.

31st August - Final submission of dissertation The closing date for submission of your dissertation is Friday 30th August. Given the probability of problems with computers and binders, you are strongly advised to complete everything well before this date!!!

Note! There is no extension beyond the closing date!

Fieldwork safety

This refers to fieldwork undertaken by you as a postgraduate student, as part requirement for your MA programme. The following guidelines (“Ten Golden Rules”) are recommended whether you are undertaking fieldwork in the company of teaching/research staff or not.

Do not carry out fieldwork on your own. Always try to get assistance from a relative or fellow student.

Do not inspect any site which may place you in danger (e.g. mines, souterrains)

Do not work in dangerous terrain (e.g. cliff tops, mountain areas, lakes, bogs etc.). If it

cannot be avoided, always first consult with the Department for appropriate guidelines.

Be aware of your own personal safety at all times. Be fully alert to any man-made hazards or any threat to your personal security (e.g. farm machinery, electrical power lines, slurry pits).

Obtain the landowner’s permission to access land.

Ascertain whether there are any potential hazards such as bulls, electric fencing, etc.

Inform family members or friends of your fieldwork at all times, giving departure and return times, and ensure that you always leave a contact number at which you can be reached.

Do not forget to bring a First-Aid kit.

Be equipped for the weather and the terrain.

(Clothing, footwear, food, water, charged mobile phone)

You are advised to have an anti-tetanus immunization before starting fieldwork. For further information, consult with the ‘Health & Safety’ information on the Archaeology

website: https://www.nuigalway.ie/colleges-and-schools/arts-social-sciences-and-celtic-studies/geography-archaeology/disciplines/archaeology/health-and-safety/

NOTE: If you have any concerns regarding Health & Safety or medical conditions that might hinder or prevent fieldwork please bring it to the attention of a member of staff!

19

Fieldwork ethics

Always remember that you are working on the cultural heritage of the present day community of the area. Members of this community will have their own perceptions of and relationships to the monuments and artefacts you are studying. It is essential that you are respectful of this relationship and try to act accountably to people even if you find you have different views on the archaeology. Reflect on any consequences of your fieldwork for the different sectors of the local community before you initiate it; the best way to do this is to consult them first. Keep communities informed of your progress throughout your project.

Some students may decide to make their work community-based from the outset and in that case will need to work according to a range of ethical guidelines. If you did not become familiar with these as an undergraduate please make an appointment with Maggie Ronayne who can direct you to appropriate and internationally accepted professional standards.
