Pre-approval required (6 hours).

COURSE OUTCOMES At the end of this course, the student will: 1. The student will understand the connection between effective preaching, discipleship, and

evangelism and personal spiritual piety.

2. The student will have an accurate grasp of the characteristics of the major literary genres found in biblical literature.

3. The student will gain a working knowledge of the critical relationship between biblical theology and expositional preaching.

4. The student will develop enhanced personal skills in hermeneutics, homiletics, evangelism, discipleship, and preaching/teaching delivery.

5. The student will appreciate the value of giving and receiving constructive criticism in the context of teaching and preaching ministries.

6. The student will have a deeper understanding of, appreciation for, and compassion towards the people to whom he or she teaches, a people patient and trusting enough to give access to their hearts and minds through the exposition of God’s Word.

Preaching Worksheets [30%] Outcomes 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8

The student will select four different biblical texts for detailed study from a list provided by the teacher. The genres of the four texts must be different from each other. Please complete the preaching worksheet provided by the teacher for each biblical text, focusing especially on the questions asking for a passage outline (exegetical) and a preaching outline (homiletical). You will be taught in class what a passage outline is and what a preaching outline is. Please use the format provided (provided on page 12 of this syllabus). Each preaching worksheet must be no longer than two pages. Typical required formatting is not required for the worksheets. The first worksheet is due February 15. The second worksheet is due March 22. The third worksheet is due April 12. The fourth worksheet is due May 4th. 300 points. (bring copies)

Preaching Convictions Paper [15%] Outcomes 1, 4, 6, 7

Write a 3-4 page reflection paper on your theological and pragmatic convictions about the role of and approach to preaching the Word in the life of the church. Please also address how Word ministry is the foundation of both evangelism and discipleship. Feel free to use the sources used in the course, but do not feel obligated to do so. This paper is due on April 26. 150 points. (bring copies)

Biblical Theology Paper [10%] Outcome 3, 4, 7

Develop a 2-3 page resource you could use personally and corporately to

share the basic storyline of the Bible (biblical theology used for

evangelism and discipleship). This should be deep enough to

summarize the Bible correctly yet simple enough to explain to someone

new to the Bible. Be sure to include appropriate biblical citation.

This paper is due on April 5. 100 points. (bring copies)

Internship Responsibilities [10%] Outcomes 6-8

Fulfill all of your regular duties as a pastoral intern, including all regular

meetings and required tasks. In order to maintain accountability, you

are required to turn in a time log (located at the end of this syllabus

along with the reading log) at the conclusion of this seminar indicating

that you have fulfilled the required minimum of 50 hours of service in

ministry. The time log will be combined with an evaluation from your

pastor to determine your grade for this portion of the class.

Remember each text must be from a different genre of Scripture. Use this worksheet and the tools you’ve learned in reading and class

discussions thus far, but please do not use commentaries. You will have 5 minutes in class to present on each of your texts. Your

responses to the questions should total a maximum of two pages. Work hard to be succinct as you aim to master the biblical text.

1. Exegesis - Passage Outline: How has the author organized the text? Answer this question in two ways: 1) show

the biblical author’s structure with sections and verse references, and 2) be prepared to explain how you

arrived at this structure.

2. Exegesis: How is the meaning of your text informed by its context? Answer this question using 1) the

immediate context (the closest passages on both sides of your text), 2) the context of the whole book and its

place in the canon (i.e. theme, occasion), and 3) the historical context.
