Welcome to theMay e-edition ofYour Local Flyer

What a very strange time we are living at the moment!

With the current government guidelines we are not delivering the magazine door to door

this month, but we are still delivering you the best of MK that are still working (well at the time of publishing they are)

We have been very busy getting a COVID-19 hub together on the Your Local Flyer website which is a source of information from Help and Support around Milton Keynes and beyond and the companies still offering a service to help get us through this time. Please visit www.yourlocalflyer.co.uk/covid-19/ for more information and to see the list (which grows daily)

We have been working from home since Monday 23rd March and surprisingly have found it easier than first thought. Not only that but having my two children at home as well and trying to home school them has been - well - challenging to say the least. I am in no way a teacher but thankfully the school have been AMAZING and have been sending daily tasks and work sheets out for them to work through. There is also an online platform where we can communicate with the class teacher to ask questions, share work and most importantly, ask for help. So I wanted to say a HUGE thank you for the support and effort you have put in to getting us through and making sure the children are still educated to the best of our ability. We hope to be dropping through your door again VERY soon as my delivery team are choping to get going. Fingers crossed this will be soon.

Until next month

MayGardening Tips

Spring usually arrives by mid-March and the frequent sunny days provide

the opportunity for an increasing range of gardening tasks. It’s time to get busy preparing seed beds, sowing seed, cutting back winter shrubs and generally tidying up around the garden.

Top jobs this month

• Protect new spring shoots from slugs

• Plant shallots, onion sets and early potatoes

• Plant summer-flowering bulbs

• Lift and divide overgrown clumps of perennials

• Top dress containers with fresh compost

• Mow the lawn on dry days (if needed)• Cut back Cornus (dogwood) and Salix

(willow) grown for colourful winter stems

• Hoe and mulch weeds to keep them under control early

• Start feeding fish and using the pond fountain; remove pond heaters

• Prune bush and climbing roses• Harden off half-hardy plants by leaving

them outside during the day and bringing them back under cover at night for 7 to 10 days before planting outdoors.

• Tie in climbing and rambling roses. Laying the stems horizontally will help to produce more flowers.

• Prune spring-flowering shrubs after flowering.

• Cut back flowered shoots of choisya to promote a second

flush of flowers in autumn.• Trim lavender plants, cutting off old flower heads and about 2.5 cm (1 inch) of the current year’s growth.

• Feed and water container plants.

• Top-dress permanent pot plants to refresh the compost.

• Continue to weed beds and borders to prevent competition for water and nutrients.

• Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of daffodils and other spring-flowering bulbs.

As bulbs fade and herbaceous borders grow in leaps and bounds, it is now clear that summer is approaching. Sowing and planting out bedding can begin, depending on regional weather variations, and you can take softwood cuttings. It’s also time to get back into the lawn mowing regime, as the lawn will be loving the warmer temperatures this month brings.

Ben Everitt, the MP for Milton Keynes North, has welcomed the announcement of £750 million funding to help charities through the coronavirus pandemic. The Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, has confirmed tens of thousands of charities providing vital services will benefit from direct cash grants as demand for their services increases due to the coronavirus pandemic, including to help domestic abuse victims. Some £370m of this will go to small and medium-sized charities, including through a grant to the National Lottery Community Fund for those in England, will support those organisations at the heart of local communities which are making a big difference during the outbreak, including those

delivering food, essential medicines and providing financial advice. Hospices will receive £200m of the extra money, while the Government will match pound for pound whatever the public donates to the BBC’s Big Night In charity appeal.

Ben commented, “Charities do such wonderful work for our local communities so I’m delighted the Government will be supporting them with a big funding package to ensure their vital services continue through the coronavirus outbreak. “We have so many amazing charities right here in Milton Keynes and of course the wonderful

Willen Hospice so I hope this extra cash boost can help as we are extremely grateful for all their hard work. Ben posts the latest Government updates and local schemes on his social media pages – Ben Everitt on Facebook and @Ben_Everitt on Twitter

Positive LivingManaging your fears…Are you sure you really know what that means?People see what they want to see when viewing one another, especially when dealing with opposites, jealousy, uncertainty or suspicion, religious groups and dogmas, gang verses gang, neighbour verses neighbour, family verses family, brother, sister, husband, wife, even when speaking truths to one another a second voice is often evident in background to make you second guess, to insist that you hear otherwise, so you believe that what they’re saying has deeper agenda. In any walk of life at times we are uncertain, usually fuelled by past events, fear itself is ever present in opposition.

Only two trains of thought and energy exist, positive and negative, but from the highest truth and perspective there’s really only One. All originates from the same Oneness, starting off as raw, pure and neutral, then we use it. Endowed with charge from actions and intentions we turn it something that it wasn’t. You could argue that this is just creation, but as powerful, thinking, discerning individuals with all we’ve learnt and know, by now we should better grasp what we are doing.

Positive/Negative, Light/Dark, Love/Hate, War/Peace, Balance/Disarray, Safety/Destruction, Trust/Worry/Stress, Clarity/Uncertainty, are but a common names used and recognised today for the very same things, categorised spinoffs, variations, labels of love or fear in many forms. All feelings and emotions, wants, likes, dislikes, aspirations, doubts or disappointments are part of the same, depending on the mind-set you are harbouring at that moment.

So again what are fears? Fear is anything that’s not akin to love, balance, peace or light. Unless negative thoughts have meaning – to warn ahead about some happening or to make you double check, then often it will be counter-productive. When you remain in tune with your rhythmic self, you’ll notice subtle differences within your energy field of when your system opens up or it pulls back. These sensations are primitive but highly evolved practices that your own soul has developed over lifetimes to keep you safe. This is how you’ve learned to read real life, to recognise good from bad, true from false, safe or not, long before any other outward signal or expression will appear.

Fear can also be placed up ahead on your not yet travelled pathway by others or by self, by expectations, doubtful thinking, supposition or just plain mulling over old/new ideas. Over time this energy builds up around intentions or actives not yet reached. Depending on content, negative or positive, you’ll feel yourself repelled or attracted through the energy you put there over

hours, days, weeks and even years, which creates excitement, annoyance, fear, only now as you

consciously start to notice you can change that!

Remember what you’re dealing with here is life’s own fundamental base programming, behaviours and attitudes that occur out of view, automatically, which then drives what happens daily or plays out. When you understand the barometer

of your own inner self better options can play out as you attract them. At all

times two solutions or two choices are available.

(I am I). These behaviours can be dense or subtle. They affect what’s occurring large

or small, just like ripples that spread out across a lake. Every person is their own epicentre. At all times bring yourself back into perfect balance, to help life to procure what you need. (I am I).The moment you recognise something is amiss in your now use your thoughts as you know how to correct what is happening. Request a better solution. Recycle what’s been said or what may be unfolding and let it pass. If that is something big, watch how you internally react. Repeat the process as often as needed to bring about peace and balance and much more – for self and others. You are working with live energy itself, directing and controlling it on real life’s behalf, turning resistance back to balance and even love.

SIMPLE WAYS TO SAVE INHERITANCE TAXIt is often said that Inheritance Tax (IHT) is a voluntary tax. In many ways this is very true. Although Inheritance Tax represents a very small proportion of all government taxes it is on the rise. In spite of this there remains a number of really simple ways to legally avoid IHTsuch as gifting, using the available exemptions and reliefs and so on. Let me just explain one of them in more detail.

AIM ISAs were introduced on 5 August 2013. ISAs are free of Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax (CGT) but not IHT except for AIM ISAs which are totally tax free! Let me qualify that point. Free of Income Tax CGT from day one but only free of IHT after 2 years. So what is an AIM ISA? It is an ISA that invests in shares that are traded on the Alternative Investments Market (AIM). After 2 years such shares qualify for 100% business property relief whuch means they then become IHT free.

The AIM market is the secondary market to the main stock market. Shares on the AIM market are mostly smaller shares than the main market ones though the larger AIM shares would comfortably qualify for inclusion on the main stockmarket in their own right. So why do the largest AIM companies not list their shares on the London

Stock exchange? Well it is primarily for two reasons. Lower costs and less regulation.

Our favoured AIM ISAs are ones that invest in a portfolio of about 30 of the largest AIM shares. This means that the shares can be bought and sold without the investment losing its IHT free status after 2 years.

So far our clients have experienced very healthy investment returns and a number of them already have totally tax free investments since they have held them for 2 years already. Clients can also access their money at any time.

So what’s the catch? Well AIM ISAs are not covered by the Investor Compensation Scheme and are classed as higher risk investments because they are invested in smaller companies. So it is important to take advice from a professional.

Hope springs eternalAt the time of writing on 3 April 2020 the number of coronavirus cases worldwide has risen to 1,018,107 (89,081 a month earlier) and the number of deaths is now 53,251 (3,057 a month ago). Lockdown has been imposed on the UK and in many countries worldwide too. This is how much has changed in just a month since I wrote my last article.

So trying to attempt to predict what will happen in the near future is nigh on impossible. However, what I have noticed anecdotally is more people gradually starting to return to work but within the social distancing rules, for example construction workers. Also if the concept of an “immunity passport” becomes accepted and widespread testing becomes available too then many more people could return to work sooner than Boris Johnson’s initial forecast of 12 weeks to contain COVID-19 in the UK.

So if you are running a business and you are particularly badly affected by the government’s lockdown what should you do? Well the first thing to do is not panic. Easier said than done of course. I personally own several businesses. Some are more badly affected than others.

What I have discovered is that if you speak to suppliers, landlords, lenders and government the usual reaction is one of sympathy and co-operation. After all we are all in the same boat and it is not our individual faults that this has happened. Some people are unsympathetic and totally unreasonable. They need a reality check. There will always be a minority of people who are selfish and mean-spirited. They are the ones to sever your relationships with for good.

So what can you do? If your business is about to fail then simply shut up shop and

TAKING POSITIVES IN RESPONSE TO LOCKDOWN

Being in lockdown from the coronavirus is undoubtedly one of the most difficult challenges we could face. Despite the alarming amount of damage and stress we are experiencing, there are positive responses we can still take from it. The heartfelt appreciation of our key workers and the importance of connecting with each other for example. Not to mention the significance we can see in protecting every member of our society more equally and living more sustainably in future.

We do not have to look far for inspiration in MK… Communities are mobilising to look after each other and find new ways of living and doing business together. We are seeing great numbers of volunteers organising to pick up shopping and prescriptions for vulnerable people and have had telephone friendship teams and various “virtual” activities set up to help keep us connected in our physical isolation.

Creating more self-sufficient communities Lockdown means we have slowed down to appreciate nature and our gardens more; learning to grow our own veg at home for greater self-sufficiency for example. Some of us are topping up food supplies by staying home and ordering tasty, plastic-free alternatives to the supermarket by buying dairy, meat and veg delivery boxes and supporting our local farms and shops. My Refill Market, one of MK’s few zero waste shops, gives us more ethical choice when it comes to online shopping now too.

The amazing effort of Community Action:MK has seen them match 100s of MK volunteers with several local groups and organisations to help deliver food and equipment and for emotional support. Check their website communityactionmk.org for the list of local activity in your parish or get in contact if your organisation needs volunteers, you want to help, or to see how you can support the crowdfunding campaigns to help those most in need in MK.

Every action makes a difference & you have the power to bring about change.

Iain’s DiaryThe past month has been a strange one; like many other I have been adjusting to staying within my home and working remotely to help stop the spread of coronavirus between households, save for the occasional trips out to the shops and walks for exercise.

First and foremost, I would like to record my huge thanks and admiration to all those working in difficult circumstances to keep us going through these difficult times; from our carers, doctors and nurses, to shop workers, delivery drivers and refuse collectors and many, many, more – thank you!

I write this article at a time before any decisions have been made about when the restrictions may be eased; there are promising signs that the measures have been successful in reducing the spread of the virus and the number of casualties but we are not there yet. Easing the restrictions will involve difficult trade-offs between different considerations but I am confident that we will pull through this and emerge stronger and wiser on the other side.

My work at home has been a combination of a huge increase in casework, advising constituents on the packages of Government support available, and my Ministerial work in the two departments I cover as a Whip and helping for the return of Parliament (virtually or otherwise) after Easter.

Away from my computer keyboard and Zoom conference calls

(which I am still struggling to master!), I have used my lockdown time to catch up on lots of books I have been meaning to read, indulging in my passion for listening to classical music, and catching up on many long-neglected domestic chores (and then having to re-do them more often than not as I fail my partner’s inspection tests!). In the brief spells of getting outside for exercise, it has been an absolute joy

to walk in Howe Park Wood which is next to my home and watch the cherry blossom and bluebells develop. We are lucky to have such lovely woods and open spaces in Milton Keynes.

It was a privilege to present St Thomas Aquinas Primary School with their full Green Flag award to recognise the school’s and pupil’s dedication to playing their role

in being more environmentally friendly. This has seen St Thomas Aquinas reduce unnecessary waste, promote recycling and plant trees amongst it strive to be more friendly to the environment. The school’s green approach has been overseen by the Eco Committee with help from Miss Greaves and Mrs Stormonth. Congratulations to all those involved, it is a great feat to have achieved!

Finally, please continue to follow the Government’s guidelines and advice of staying at home, protecting the NHS and saving lives. Hopefully, by the time of my next column we shall be emerging from the restrictions but, in the meantime, if you have any questions or queries, please visit my website which is regularly being updated with information surrounding coronavirus before contacting my office.

Please continue to stay safe and take care, we will beat COVID-19 together!

Whizz biscuits in a food processor to crumbs (or bash in a food bag with a rolling pin, then empty into a bowl). Add flour and pulse/mix to combine. Empty on to a work surface, shape into a disc and wrap in clingfilm. Chill for 10min. On a lightly floured work surface, roll out dough and use to line a 23cm (9in) fluted, loose-bottomed tart tin. Trim overhang with a sharp knife, prick base all over with a fork and chill again for 1hr until firm. Place tin on a baking tray. Line pastry case with baking parchment and fill with baking beans. Blind bake for 20min, then remove parchment and beans. Return to oven for 5-7min until pastry is pale golden and feels sandy to the touch. Set aside.Meanwhile, finish the curd. In a medium pan, mix the rhubarb purée, cornflour, egg yolks and remaining 125g (4oz) sugar. Add butter. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until thickened (the mixture will need to boil). Remove from heat and whisk in a little pink food colouring, if using (see GH Tip). Scrape into baked pastry case, level and chill for 30min.In a clean bowl, whisk egg whites to stiff peaks with a hand-held electric whisk. Combine sugar and cornflour in a bowl then add gradually to the whites, whisking well after each addition – the meringue should be stiff and glossy. Spoon on to the rhubarb layer. Bake for 20min until lightly golden. Allow to cool for 20min before serving in slices with cold cream, if you like.

Seriously, who doesn’t like food?.

I think we all do, and it’s easier than ever to grab pretty much any type of food , 24 hours a day, whether out, on the go, or at home.

Highly processed foods in bigger portions and so easy on the wallet, mean that the majority of us have to fight hard to stay in shape and keep healthy!.Bad habits are easy to fall into and can end up ingrained over the years. If we can make a few tweaks here and there and become more mindful of what we buy to eat, what we order when eating out, our snacks, how much we eat and when, we can re-learn to listen to our bodies and change our habits over time to make a big impact on our physical, mental and emotional health.

Are you with me!!

Childhood Nutrition and Obesity Prevention.

One in three children now leave primary school either overweight or obese making them much more likely to stay

obese in adulthood. Children become overweight for a variety of reasons; learnt family eating and activity behaviours, genetic factors, lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating patterns and behaviour, and often, a combination of these factors can be the root cause(s).

Obesity places children at significant risk of developing chronic diseases later on in life such as; heart disease, diabetes, stroke and some cancers, as well as becoming more likely to develop stress, anxiety, and suffer from low body image and self-esteem.

Designing effective, evidence-based programmes that target the cause(s) of childhood obesity is key to keep children in a healthy weight range, lowering the chances of obesity related diseases, and to have a good attitude towards nutrition, enabling them to make healthy food choices for life.

I offer consultations aimed at parents and their children, so if you feel your family would benefit from healthy eating and lifestyle advice, book now for an

informal consultation.During our meeting, your child’s height and weight will be measured, and an in-depth discussion of your food and activity diary completed prior to the consultation as well as realistic expectations and goal setting.

A confidential report will be sent a few days after the consultation to address nutritional issues and to suggest subtle dietary and lifestyle changes and guidance on how your family can work together to support your child and each other make the necessary changes.

Other services provided: Lifestyle and wellness coaching, healthy eating advice for a range of health concerns ranging from weight management to acute or chronic diagnosed conditions.

The MK Good Neighbour Guide Ways to help your community amidst the COVID-19 pandemic

New lockdown guidelines drawn up by police - here’s what you can and

can’t do

New guidelines have been drawn up by police chiefs on what counts as a “reasonable excuse” to leave home during the coronavirus lockdown. The guidance comes as the government extended the lockdown for another three weeks, until May 7.

Previously, during the lockdown, people have been advised to go out just once per day for a maximum one hour’s exercise or buy essential goods, reports MirrorOnline.

Now police have said needing to cool off from an argu-ment, buying alcohol, taking a pet to the vet or having a rest while out for a walk are now acceptable.

The National Police Chief’s Council and College of Policing [NPCC] also says buying food to last “several days”, including luxury items and alcohol, is also a valid excuse to be out.People are also able to visit those who are vulnerable or move into a friend’s home for a time in order to “cool-off” from an argument.

The NPCC said the list will help officers interpret the advice from the government. It comes after more than 3,200 fines were handed out to people considered to be flouting the rules in England between March 27 ad April 13.

Shopping - What you can do:• Purchase several days’ worth of food, including

luxury items and alcohol• Buy a small amount of a staple item or necessity

(for example a newspaper, pet food, a loaf of bread or pint of milk)

• Collect surplus basic food items from a friend• Purchase tools and supplies to repair a fence

panel damaged in bad weather• If you’re out on your weekly shop, you won’t be

stopped from browsing the “non-essential” aisles. The document adds that people have a reason to visit shops as long as they’re open so it’s not appropriate to stop them purchasing items considered to be “non-es-sentials”.

Shopping - What you can’t do:• Police say it is not reasonable to collect DIY

supplies for a large project.Exercise - What is allowed:• Going for a run or cycle, practising yoga, walking

in the countryside or in cities or attending an allotment

• Driving to countryside and walking (where far more time is spent walking than driving)

• Stopping to rest or to eat lunch while on a long walk

• Exercising more than once per day is allowed in some circumstances.

Exercise - What isn’t allowed:• Driving for a prolonged period with only brief

exercise.• A short walk to a park bench, when the person

remains seated for a much longer period• Sunbathing in parks is not permitted.• Police say exercise “must involve some move-

ment”.Work - What you can do:• Key workers or other essential workers can

travel to work where it is not reasonably possible to work from home.

• Some non-key workers or non-essential key-workers can travel to work where it is not reasonably possible to work from home

• Deliver food packages to vulnerable people.Work - What you cannot do:• People who can work from home choosing to

work in a local park• Knock on doors offering to do cash in-hand work• The guidelines also state that you cannot work

from local gardens or parks while working from home.

Other reasons to leave home - What you can do:• Go to the vet for essential treatment• Move to a friend’s address for several days to

allow a “cooling-off” following arguments at home• Provide support to vulnerable people. What you cannot do:• Visit a vet’s surgery in person to renew a pre-

scription (where this could be done over the phone)

• Visiting a friend in their address or meeting in public to socialise.

As the impact of coronavirus/COVID-19 on our community grows and the government asks more people to self-isolate, many different groups of all ages are at increased risk of isolation and loneliness in our communities, especially the elderly and most vulnerable in our society. Times like these emphasise the need for us to reach out to those in our communities who may need the extra help during these worrying times. As Milton Keynes residents, we pride ourselves on supporting our community where and when we can. At this unprecedented time, we believe it’s vital to pull together to help those affected by the situation caused by COVID-19. There are things you can do to help. These include very local offers of support and help to your neighbours or volunteering through a coordinated programme to reach vulnerable people. The most important consideration is that people are safe and feel positive about any interactions. There are a number of things we can do to help those that need it the most.

Some examples of how you can help your neighbours and community 1. Offer help and support

It’s simple things that can make a big difference to someone vulnerable or in need. If you’re fit and healthy you can lend your support to those neighbours who will need your help the most. Why not pop a postcard through your neighbours’ doors with your contact details and information on what you can help them out with?

Sometimes even sharing the school run with a frail parent or taking an elderly neighbour’s dog out for a walk when they are no longer able to due to self-isolation can go far in making their lives easier. You could volunteer with an existing organisation.

Community Action: MK are coordinating volunteers to support people in need through existing groups and organisations. This gives the added assurance that volunteers are registered and their details are recorded. They are developing a range of roles and are identifying which of those roles need DBS checks and those which don’t. You may volunteer with an organisation already, but your role is currently impossible to do; if so, they can help.

2. Reach out on social platforms

Facebook community pages and platforms like Nextdoor can be helpful ways to keep connected to people.

However, please be careful about sharing too much personal information and never hand money or financial details over to someone you don’t know or trust.

Page 17: Ma 2020 YOUR LOCAL FLYER

3. Stay connected

SeIf-isolation can be lonely. As self-isolation increases and government measures heighten, we will need to find new ways to stay connected and check on one another for our physical and mental wellbeing. A friendly phone call or a quick chat to check up on your neighbours who feel alone and isolated at this difficult time. You can even video call them to make the call feel more life-like.

There may be some more creative ways to stay connected. You could organise an indoor picnic for your neighbours where you all connect via Skype and eat your lunch together. You could organise a street band to play music which you can listen to in your houses. More ideas are available here.

4. Share accurate information

Support those in your community who may be anxious about COVID-19. Direct them the official websites such as the NHS England website and correct advice from Public Health England. Please refrain from spreading inaccurate or sensationalised news from other sources. For general wellbeing tips, you can also visit the Milton Keynes Council website.

5. Continue practising good hygiene

A simple and effective way to protect yourself and others is by making sure you wash your hands frequently with soap and water, or a hand sanitiser if you are out and about. It’s particularly important to wash your hands once you get home or arrive at work or before you prepare or eat food.

5. Be kind Remember the saying “tough times do not last, but tough people do”? The kinder we are to each other, the more resilient we will be against COVID-19. We will all be impacted at some point, many with changes to our lifestyle from self-isolation to remote working. Help others when you can, avoid panic buying or scaremongering and be kind. You can find more useful tips on how you can help out in your community here.

And some things not to do Don’t stockpile Supermarkets have already reassured the public they will continue getting daily stocks and are doing their best to stock up the shelves daily. Some have put in place limits for essential grocery purchases so that everyone especially vulnerable people can get what they need. There is no reason to stockpile. Don’t travel if not essential Some of us are not able to work from home at this time, and we still have to go out for essential food items. Limit your travel where you can. Don’t cause undue panic While it is great to stay connected, please don’t share sensationalist information or pictures. These may not impact on you, but you could adversely affect someone who’s more fragile.

Page 18: Ma 2020 YOUR LOCAL FLYER

Don’t let go of good habits and routines It’s easy for any of us to shut down or go into panic mode. If you are self-isolating, try to keep to a daily schedule as best as you can, even if you’re not working. Read, do household chores, get on with outstanding DIY jobs. When possible, try to get some exercise – even if it is just walking around in your garden. Don’t get locked into bad news Stay informed on the latest developments and know what’s going on but don’t get locked into a cycle of 24-hours news broadcast. This will only cause needless anxiety. Turn to news at intervals throughout the day so you can stay up to date without being overwhelmed. Also, try to schedule in at least 30 minutes of quiet time in your day. Don’t give cash or share your bank account, debit or credit card details Sadly, it’s at such volatile times opportunists find ways to prey on vulnerable people. Practise due diligence and make sure you don’t share financial details or hand out cash to anyone you don’t trust. Don’t share personal details with anyone who’s not from an official organisation Much like with your financial information, practice caution if anyone who isn’t from an official organisation asks for your personal details.

Don’t make yourself vulnerable If you’re fit and healthy and want to help out with community efforts by reaching out those who are more vulnerable, make sure you always do so without putting yourself in danger. When giving help at someone else’s home, always stay on the doorstep and ensure you are not alone with a vulnerable person at any time. Don’t feel obliged to accept every offer of help If you feel overwhelmed or simply feel you can’t accept an offer of help for any reason, don’t feel obliged. As long you do so politely, the person offering won’t be offended.

DOMESTIC ABUSE REACHES ALL TIME

HIGH DURING COVID 19

Across the country domestic abuse is soaring as victims are trapped with abusive partners during the coronavirus lockdown. Figures, as of Saturday, in the UK show that there were 12 deaths reported in the last 5 days from domestic abuse. Normally in the UK, 2 women per week are murdered. The National Domestic Abuse Helpline has seen a 25% increase in calls to them. The facts are alarming and Milton Keynes Domestic Abuse Charity are worried about families in the city during these difficult times.

Sue Burke, Chief Exec of MK ACT said “We want to reassure people that we are open as normal. Following Government advice, our team is now working remotely but very much open for business supporting those who experience Domestic Abuse. Our refuge is open as normal and every day we continue to move families out of domestically abusive homes to safety. I’d like to urge anyone who is experiencing abuse to call us, when they are safe to do so.”

For support or to discuss your options, MK ACT’s team of staff and volunteers continue to work and are covering all phone numbers and email boxes which are listed below as normal so please phone/contact them between office hours of 9am-5pm.• Crisis Service Helpline – 0344 3754307 and info@

If you need to speak to someone out of these hours you can ring the: National Domestic Violence Helpline on 0808 2000 247

If you feel at risk don’t be afraid to call the police: 999

When calling the police, victims should familiarise themselves with The Silent Solution system. This is a system for victims of domestic abuse who might be afraid of further danger and escalation of harm if they are overheard when calling 999 in an emergency. When somebody calls 999, an operator will ask which emergency service is required. If the caller is unable to audibly signal to the operator, the call will be forwarded to an operating system. If 55 is pressed by the caller, the system will detect this.

The operator will then transfer the call to the relevant police force as an emergency. Click here to find out more.

HOW CAN YOU HELP MK ACT DURING THIS

DIFFICULT TIME?Due to safety, we are currently no longer able to accept food or toiletries.

We are already seeing the government’s advice on self or household isolation is having impact on women, men and children experiencing domestic abuse. Home is not likely to be a safe place for survivors of domestic abuse. Social distancing and self-isolation are being used as a tool of coercive and controlling behaviour by perpetrators and are shutting down routes to safety and support.

At this difficult time, we are now appealing for money for our Last Resort Fund, instead if donations of items. The money will be used for:• £5 buys someone who is suffering from domestic

violence a new sim card so they can keep themselves safe and call for help. Some of the people we work with have never had access to their own phone before

• £10 buys soap, hand sanitizer, paracetamol and cleaning products to help a family in the fight against COVID 19

• £35 pays for a family to flee their home where they are experiencing domestic violence and takes them to the refuge

• £50 buys emergency food for a family fleeing domestic abuse to be delivered at this time through online deliveries

• £60 pays for an emergency hotel room for families in danger

• Our Last Resort Fund is currently very low, and we do not have the funds that are needed to keep up with the demand.

If you can donate any amount it would make a huge difference to allowing MK ACT to get help to families in Milton Keynes who are suffering from domestic abuse.

Conspiracy theories, false information, and photo-

shopped images…As covid-19 spreads, so

does the fake news. Social Media giants are struggling to keep-up as they work with the government’s rapid response unit trying to crack down on misinformation about the coronavirus pandemic. Trying to distinguish fact from fiction is increasingly difficult, especially when world leaders have repeated inaccuracies to their millions of followers.

Ruth Sparkes editor of teen magazine, Future Mag give us some top tips on identifying when we’re being fed fake news – here are her top tips… 1. Where did the info come from?Look at the publication or site and look at its other stories – consider whether there is any other possible dodgy content. 2. Is it current?Sometimes a story from years ago can be re used to give the impression of ‘new’ news.

3. Look closerCheck whether the story has been published on other credible sites.

4. What’s underneath the headline?

Some publications and websites use ‘click-bait’ headlines as a way to encourage you to ‘click’ on the story. Sometimes the actual story bears no resemblance to its headline.

5. Research the authorIf the article has a writer’s byline – Google them or checkout their social media accounts to see what other articles they’ve written, and to work out whether they might have a hidden agenda or a particular line to push. And lastly, 6. Check the factsThere are some great fact-checking websites such as: https://fullfact.org and https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/ to use when you’re really not sure about a story.

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Home Counties Loft Ladders come in.

The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50sqft of boarding and a light - all fully fitted in less than a day from just £355! But it’s not just the affordability of the package that makes Home Counties Loft Ladders stand out, as manager Jamie Oakley explains: ‘Our

watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen, so our customers are assured of the best job.

Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.

Our business relies on referrals and we get a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers

- that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.

At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for

every installation we carry out!’

So, if you want to make use of your loft space, call Jamie free on 0808 301 9557 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!
