Double Lens Technology The M9000Series double lens models provide aninsulating layer of air for additional cooling.When the potential exists for direct humancontact with lenses, care is required to protectpedestrians from injury. The M9000 SeriesDouble Lens models ensure lower surface

temperatures by usingtwo separate lenseswith cool air circulatingbetween them.

Double lens technology - upper lens is cooled by aninsulating layer of aircirculating between thetwo lenses.

M9000 Series - Best for a Reason

Convective Cooling Conventional sealed fixtures depend onlyupon conduction and radiation for cooling. The 9000Series with itsvented doors pioneered convection cooling as well.

The M9000Series improves on theconvective cooling process by addingair-flow channels in the wall of therough-in section. Air-flow channels greatlyimprove ambient air circulation around thepower and lamp modules, delivering coolair deep into the rough-in section. Whencool ambient air draws heat from themodules, the warmed air escapes throughdoor vents at the top of the rough-insection.

Typically, M9000s operate 30° to40° coolerthan competitive products.

Cool Operation / Cool LensA major challenge in the design of in-grade fixtures is the removal ofheat to protect components and provide lower lens temperatures.

M9000 lighting component modules are so impervious to water that it’sunnecessary to seal the rough-in section. Easy AimingThe M9000Series refines both the mechanical and optical aimingprocess. Keyed components allow maintenance and relamping tobe accomplished without reaiming.

Fixture aiming is a critical element to many projects and designers are concernedwith the methods to accomplish it. The original 9000Series combined optical andmechanical aiming. The new M9000 refines the process by introducing an aimablemodule along with keyed components to lock-in or reproduce settings.

The original 9000Series offered simple aiming by the use of active lenses (opticalaiming) and module rotation. In addition to the standard rotational indexing andlocking feature, the new M9000Series offers the option of aiming the lamp moduleitself with a locking tilt mechanism. The lamp module is located below a secondsealed lens in the rough-in section.

In summary, the M9000 Series offers two lockable aiming options:

• Optically Aimed – active lenses and lamp module rotation

• Mechanically Aimed – lamp module tilting and lamp module rotation

Both options include Aim-Lock® indexed and locking components to allowrelamping and maintenance without reaiming.

A double lens M9420, mechanically aimedfixture uses a 360° keyed swivel ring and asingle surface tilt adjustment to aim the fixture.No lamp module entrance is required for aimingany M9000 Series fixture.

Hydrel In-grade Lighting

UNDERWATER LIGHTING TECHNOLOGYMost in-grade fixtures depend upon a watertight shell toprotect vulnerable lighting components within. Keepingwater out is a formidable task, especially when the shellhas to be accessed regularly for maintenance. Moisturewithin the shell means disaster when corrosionattacks electrical components.

Hydrel solved the moisture problem by drawing on itsnearly forty-year experience in underwater lighting. Anew kind of in-grade fixture was conceived – the M9000Series, based on underwater lighting technology.

IMPROVED PHOTOMETRICSSmaller more efficient lamps combine with an array of precision reflectors andoptically active lenses. The M9000Series reaches photometric performancelevels never before achieved by in-grade lighting fixtures.

A trio of Hydrel underwater lights

Underwater modular designapplied to in-grade lightingwas truly a radical approach in1990. But to Hydrel engineerssuch underwater lightingtechniques were anything butradical. At Hydrel they werethoroughly tested, reliable,everyday procedures.

UNDERWATER DESIGN AND THE MODULAR CONCEPTSealed lighting components, similar to those used in pools and fountains,inspired the idea behind the M9000 in-grade light. A polymeric, non-corroding,in-grade container features a built-in watertight junction box, sealedwatertight lamp module, and an epoxy-encapsulated watertight power supplymodule, all linked by plug-together underwater-rated cables and connectors. Everything within the container is watertight!

MODULAR DESIGN AND THE FLOW-THRU CONCEPTOnce the lighting component modules are totally watertight, a watertight shell to protect them is no longer necessary. Flow-thru design means that no attempt is made to keep water out ofthe container. If water runs in, it flows through to drain out the bottom, or simply evaporates.

Even today, Hydrel M9000Series are the only in-grade fixtures that do not depend on awatertight shell to protect lighting components.

Rough-in section Installation

As illustrated, the rough-in section is retainedin-grade by various methods in a variety ofsubstructures.

Rough-in section - How it works

During the construction phase of a project,the rough-in section can be preinstalled onsite. Lens, lamp, and power modules, whichcould be vulnerable to construction damageare not installed at this time. Wrapped inprotective plastic, the tough engineeredpolymer rough-in section is placed flush tograde over the conduit in base materialwhich has been prepared for drainage. Whenconstruction is completed and wiring pulled,the rough-in section sheds its protectiveshrink wrap and stands ready to receive itslighting modules.

Soils

The M9000 Series eliminates the normalconcern of burying metal fixtures in alkalineand acidic soils, in areas of heavy fertilizeruse, or in salt air environments. Hydrel’sadvanced polymer materials provide for along life in all environments.

Safety

All fixtures must be grounded in accordancewith local electrical codes and the NationalElectric Code. It is recommended that thejunction box splice compartment be sealedwith re-enterable potting compound.
