M6 Tweeter Replacement. Note and disclaimers: I am documenting the steps to the best of my recollection. Do not blame me for any inaccuracies or if my steps are incorrect. You need to do your own homework too and use common sense. Do this at your own risk. I am not responsible for your own actions. Now that we got that out of the way: First, thanks to the info provided by member mspeed here: Great info. As mspeed have mentioned, Logic 7 is great. Amp is powerful. However, speakers and tweeters used are just decent and could be improved. So I decided to replace the most important ones first. Tweeters: Stock tweeters are harsh sounding. Stock center speaker is muddy sounding. I will create another post later for the center speaker replacement. I decided to use my favorite car tweeter: Polk DB1000. These produces silky smooth highs. I believe all speakers used for the M6 are 4” size. For center channel, I decided to use FOCAL 100 CA1 4” coaxial speaker. Great sounding speakers and priced reasonably. Use eBay or Google to find the best deals on the above speaker/tweeters. Note: You will have to disconnect a few connectors behind the door panel. I was told that if you disconnect your battery ground first and completely remove power to the car – you will NOT get fault errors. I was not smart enough to remove power on mine, so upon door reassembly I had the following OBD display faults when I turned on the ignition switch: Passenger restraint system fault, etc. You will have reset these faults or take it to the $tealer for fault reset. The dealer will either get mad at you for tampering your car while its still under warranty or not say anything and just reset the faults. To make work easier for you, just print the attached and take with you when you do this upgrade. See attached procedures.

Door Tweeters: 1) Remove all carbon fiber trim or wood trim. These are just friction held.

So just buy a plastic trim removal tool at Harbor Freight or Bavarian auto to make removal easier and to protect the doors, trim and leather.

2) I believe there are two screws behind the carbon fiber trim that you will have to remove in order to remove the door panel.

3) Use the same plastic trim removal tool and pop up the window switch. These are also just friction held, no screws.

4) Behind the switch is a torx screw that you will need to remove in order to completely remove the door panel. See photo below.

I believe there are a total of 5 screws that needs to be removed in order to completely remove the door panel.

5) Below is another screw you will have to remove. Use a jeweler flat head screw driver to pop off the plastic cover. The screw is behind it.

6) Make sure all the screws attaching the door panel to the door itself is now all removed. I believe there are 5. Sorry, my recollection is not as good anymore as I did this mod 3 weeks ago now.

Now use the plastic tool and wedge it between the door panel and door. Give it a good thug to separate them. The door panel is held by plastic clip latches. Once the door panel is separated, you will need to disconnect all the connectors. Make sure you mark them so you know which connector goes with which connector.

After you disconnect all the connectors, remove the door panel. You will need to LIFT UP slightly on the door panel, then twist the door panel up and out.

Remove the plastic tweeter housing by lifting it up and out.

Trace the tweeter wire back to where the “bass blocker” filter is and cut it there. Cut where the X is. This is where I recommend you splice the new tweeter wire and its “bass blocker”. See photos below.

Now remove the tweeter from its plastic door sill housing. See photo below.

I made a mistake on trying to separate the tweeter itself from its own housing. DO NOT DO THIS. I destroyed my tweeter by doing this. Just pop off the whole tweeter from the door sill housing and it will come off. The whole tweeter assembly is held by plastic tabs. Just bend the plastic tabs out of the way and the tweeter assembly will come out. See photo below. This is what YOU DON’T want to do!

As I mentioned, I used Polk DB1000 tweeters.

Insert the polk tweeter where the OE tweeter came off. It will fit but not perfect fit. You have two options: Just let it sit there held by the rubber backing or use hot melt glue to hold it in place. I used hot melt glue on mine. See photo below.

Now splice the polk tweeter wires where you cut the OE tweeter wires. Ensure you splice the polk tweeter wire which contains the “bass blocker / cross over network. See below.

Here’s what it looks like once tweeter is installed. (This is the driver side.) The driver side is the same procedures. Reverse the procedure above for door panel reinstallation. NOTE: Do not just smack the door panel towards the door. You will have to align ALL of the plastic clips to their hole, then start pushing the door panel to the door, otherwise, you will break the plastic clips.

The sound difference with the Polk DB1000 is amazing. Again, silky smooth highs. The harshness sound from stock tweets are gone. Hope that helps.
