The NSW Government is building the M4 Smart Motorway project. The first of its kind in NSW, the project will introduce intelligent technology to the M4 Motorway between Mulgoa Road, Penrith and Pitt Street, Mays Hill, to:

• provide safer, smoother, faster journeys

• use real time information to monitor and manage traffic flow and incidents

• use digital signs to update motorists of conditions ahead.

M4 Smart Motorway What makes it ‘smart’?• Traffic sensors every 500 metres along the

motorway and at entry ramps and exit ramps will detect changes in traffic flow and speed on the motorway.

• 100+ additional CCTV cameras on poles and bridges will help with both monitoring traffic and responding quickly to traffic conditions and incidents.

• Ramp meters at each entry ramp will control traffic entering the M4 with quick change traffic lights to improve traffic flow. The combined intelligent traffic technologies will help deliver faster, easier and safer journeys.

When the M4 Smart Motorway is up and running in 2020, its ramp meters, CCTV, traffic sensors and digital signs, will work together to transform the journey for motorists on the M4. The next step in this process is the installation of 29 overhead gantries along the M4.

New overhead gantriesWe will install 41 overhead steel gantries along the M4 Motorway between Pitt Street, Mays Hill and The Northern Road.

The gantries will hold Integrated Speed and Lane Use Signs, with one above each lane. These signs will display the current speed limit and can be changed to indicate alternate speed limits or if a lane is closed. The signs will also improve incident response time and management.

Gantry installations will require sections of the M4 Motorway to be closed in both eastbound and westbound directions. To minimise impact on traffic we will install the gantries using weekday night shifts. The M4 Motorway will be closed between 11pm and 4am in the area we are installing the gantries.

Gantry installations began in late June 2019.

Speed limits on M4 MotorwayWe have recently changed the speed limit for the ten kilometre section of the M4 Motorway between Reservoir Road and Mamre Road to 100km/h. There are still sections of the M4 where reduced speed limits are in place while construction continues.

There is construction happening all along the project length, even though some of our work is not always visible from the road. Speed limits and safety barriers along the M4 keep the road safe for both motorists and workers.

When the project is finished, customers will experience reduced travel times on the M4 Smart Motorway. In the meantime, we appreciate your patience while we ensure the safety of our workers and motorists.

Thank you for your patience!
