THE AVM STORY - 60

Meiyappan would see the ‘rushes’ of his movies many timesin order to judge technical values like cinematography, soundand others and also to

evaluate the performance of the actors, the emotionalcontent and totality of impact of the scene. Very few producersin India of his day paid such meticulous attention to ‘rushes’as Meiyappan did.

Meiyappan allotted a production unit to Pa. Neelakantanwho produced ‘Chella Pillai’ in Tamil (1955). Directed by M. V.Raman, this movie had K. R. Ramasami and the famous bi-lingual South Indian star and excellent actress K. Savithiri inlead roles. It was re-made in Telugu as ‘Vadina’ (1955) with A.Nageswara Rao replacing Ramasami as the hero.

As the 1950s rolled over the horizon, AVM Studios wit-nessed beehive like hectic activity of picture production inmore than one language. Such movies included ‘Aadarsa Sathi’(1955, Kannada), ‘Naaga Devathai’ (1956, Tamil), ‘NagulaChavithi’ (1956, Telugu), ‘Bhoo Kailas’ (1958, Kannada), ‘BhooKailas’ (1958, Telugu), ‘Sadarame’ (1956, Kannada andTelugu).

One of the films made in 1956 in AVM studio as a partner-ship venture with S. K. Pictures was ‘Kula Deivam’ - a memo-rable movie with a socially relevant message about the effi-cacy of the Hindu joint family system and remarriage of youngHindu widows. The lot of the Hindu widow had been one of untoldmisery, anguish and denial of comforts and ostracisation evenby her own family. She could not wear jewels or flowers and hadto wear only white and no other colours. She was considered anill omen. In most orthodox communities, she had to shed herhair and get her head shaved regularly. In some families shewas taken to task even if she laughed aloud. Indeed the IndianGovernment passed a law as early as 1856 named ‘The HinduWidow Remarriage Act’ but even such law did not help mat-ters. The prudish and tradition-bound society felt that the Actwas an unwanted intrusion by the alien British rulers into thetradition, orthodoxy and time -honoured customs of Hinduism! Ablatant case of male oppression, the practice continued forcenturies and, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, some social reformers took up cudgels and fought for the rightof remarriage of widows. The most famous of them all wereIshwar Chandra Vidyasagar and Kandukuri VeeresalingamPanthulu who faced much opposition and even danger to limband life. A strong religious group took Panthulu to court on thisissue! He created history by performing a widow remarriagein Madras against severe opposition and blazing a new trail insocial reform in south India. Yet it took a long time for suchmarriages to be accepted by Hindu Society.

Not surprisingly, the issue was the fulcrum of plays andmovies in many languages during the early decades of the 20thcentury. Many memorable movies were made about thissocial problem. Such movies include Y. V. Rao’s ‘Malli Pelli’(1939, Telugu), B. N. Reddi’s ‘Sumangali’(1940, Telugu),Kishore Sahu’s ‘Sindoor’ (1947, Hindi) and M. R. Vittal’s‘Hannaley Chiguridhaaga’ (1968, Kannada, State award win-ner for the first best film of the year).

‘Kula Deivam’ was based on a Bengali story by PrabhavathiDevi Saraswathi. The Tamil film script was written by ‘Murasoli’Maran.

A nephew of Mu. Karunanidhi, Maran had taken his M. ADegree and studied law for a while before he took to journalismand screenwriting. He joined the Karunanidhi-family ownedthe DMK party official mouthpiece ‘Murasoli’as its editor.Soon it became the prefix to his name and he came to be knownas ‘Murasoli’ Maran. He scripted many Tamil films withsuccess and also directed some films like ‘Marakka Mudiyuma?’and ‘Vaaliba Virundhu’. Inspired by his illustrious cult figureuncle, he entered politics and made his way to the Rajya Sabha(Upper House of the Indian parliament ) and then to the LokSabha (Lower House). And then he became a Central Ministerin Delhi. A strong silent man of quiet dignity and action, hepassed away some years ago.
